Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments I only read two that fall into this category in 2013 -- Twelve Years a Slave and The Street: A Novel

I am going to try for 6 this year.

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Changed the date requirements to reflect the effects of colonization on the African continent and in the diaspora with respect to black writers.

Thanks for the suggestion Beverly!

Beverly Since I have read a good number of the classics and my 2014 reading focus is not geared to classics I will do - 3

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments After discussing it with kisha, we decided to adopt a 30 year 'aging' for classics.

So now books written in 1984 or before will count for this challenge.

Any case anyone is struggling in the classic book area, here are some great examples:

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston Book Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Native Son by Richard Wright
Black Boy by Richard Wright
Roots by Alex Haley
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J Gaines
And of course any of Toni Morrison early books. I will list more as I think of them! Good luck on your challenges.
