SOLVED. mystery/thriller of the sort? [s]

i read this book in 5th grade and well being a fifth grader this book sorta bored me but it still really got me and i would love nothing more than to read it. I believe its about a deceased man who sent letters to various people who were tied together somehow or just people. I think each one of the was given a chess peice too. The cover had a chess piece or chess board; i cant be too sure. I read it in fifth grade so it should be 7 plus years old..defintiely think it might be 10 or so

This sounds like The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. It has had several different covers over the years and one did have a chess piece on the cover. Sorry I can't prove a link but am using my phone.
