What are you reading? (Dec 2013)
I just finished My Life with Charl[book:The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobees Manson|651026]. It was good. I know I'm crazy, but true crime (espedially anything about Manson) is just real "horror". I think I'm going to start The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe early.
I just finished Heart-Shaped Box, and it was amazing. Joe Hill is fantastic. Now I'm reading something called Her Fearful Symmetry. I haven't really started it yet. It was recommended to me by a friend.
MrsJoseph (taking back my data & giving GR the middle finger) wrote: "I wish read horror. Everyone says the Hill & Kings books are excellent."They certainly are. I actually know a lot of people who don't like Stephen King's works, but I love them. There is just something about his style that draws you in, and Joe Hill's stuff is the same way.

They really are, MrsJ. Well, I've yet to read Hill, but I think King is seriously underrated.
Which I realise is a strange thing to say about one of the best selling authors in the world, but I feel like a lot of people write his books off as popcorn horror, when he's actually one of the best character writers I can think of.

He can also put you in a setting and completely make you feel at home! In 11/22/63, I could've stayed in the 1950's and been very happy! The actual plot of the story was just like an added bonus! :)
I personally love Cujo...a lot. It wasn't until after I read it that I picked up on the subtle character aspects and how closely the story of a ravenous dog related to the marital issues the couple were having in the first half of the book. It really was a fantastic piece.
That is a great one, Caleb! I can't wait to re-read that one! But first I have to make it through the ones left that I haven't read yet. :(
I know how you feel! I really need to read Bag of Bones...but I still haven't even read some of his classics! I can't find Salem's Lot or Pet Semetary anywhere :( Not to mention all of his newer work...
I was a big Stephen King fan (high school & early college)... until I wasn't.I enjoyed The Shining, It and Needful Things (which I think I want to reread), but I was disappointed in The Stand and had difficulty getting into The Tommyknockers, Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne.
My favorite Stephen King novel of all time, however, has to be The Dark Half (although I have completely forgotten why). I will need to add that to my reread list!
I always get sad when someone says they didn't like one of King's books. My all-time favorite is The Stand! And I have yet to be disappointed by any of his books. But that's me.
I have owned It for a long time, but I haven't mustered the courage to read it. Of the books I've read, Misery is probably my favorite...that book scares me to no end.
OOh, Misery is a good one! Of all books where the "bad guy" is a human......OMG! Kathy Bates scares the bejesus out of me! lol
Nyssa, The Tommyknockers and Gerald's Game rank pretty low on my King scale. Maybe you'd like some of his newer stuff though. It's quite different from his career-starting work. It's more... intimate, in a way. 11/22/63 is an alternate history, Lisey's Story is fantastic, Duma Key is one of my new favorites, and he's put out some great short story collections in the last 5 or so years. Full Dark, No Stars is dark and grim, but really good writing. Just After Sunset is a great collection as well. :)Under The Dome is a thrill-ride, and I loved it for that, but I don't think that it really ranks up there with the ones I mentioned above.
Caleb wrote: "Kathy Bates was terrifying in the movie! Its nothing compared to the book though."Nothing ever is!
Oooo Nyssa, you should join Jesse and I in reading 11/22/63...that is if you want to get back into King. *no pressure* Jesse is about half way through and I'll be starting after I finish with The Book.
Suggestion: Would it be possible to start a "Stephen King" thread in the Horror and move all of the related posts over to it? This has turned into a really good discussion (with recommendations),
and I'd like us to continue with it but not completely overwhelm the "What are You Reading" thread.
I'll even start the thread myself if you like..I just can't (nor do I know how to) move any posts.
I don't think it's possible to move posts? But you're welcome to start a thread in the Horror folder.

I just commented that I may have to try him again...and a lot of people seem to like 11/22/63!!
I'll need to finish Runes first, though.
I've never been a "King fan" but I like some of his books. Same with Hill. I like Heart-Shaped Box, didn't really care for Horns. His last book, NOS4A2 was not only a lot more like his father's but had many "nods" to King in it. It was pretty good. It's a matter of taste.
I'm the opposite. I didn't care for Heart-Shaped Box at all. It was well written, just didn't like it. But I loved Horns.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "I've never been a "King fan" but I like some of his books. Same with Hill. I like Heart-Shaped Box, didn't really care for Horns. It looks like he's been a published writer since '08 (?) and stopped reading horror (which for me was strictly Stephen King and a little bit of Peter Straub) somewhere around '95 - give or take.
Damn, I feel old!!
Nyssa.....you want old? When Caleb brought up Cujo, I was like "wow, I haven't read that since I was 16.....which was 28 years ago" Doh! :(

No problem. :) Start at your own pace.
How are you liking Runes? I love the cover!
Dawn wrote: "I don't think it's possible to move posts? But you're welcome to start a thread in the Horror folder."I just asked over in GR Feedback, and unfortunately, you're correct. Our current conversation would have been a nice start to the SK thread, though.

I'm almost halfway through. Its okay; typical YA fare. The supernatural element has yet to be revealed, other than it exists, so I am curious to find out what type of beings they are supposed to be. Here was my last (and at this point only) update status: Runes Status Update.

Thanks for posting the link Mrs.J.

Welcome!
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Really...you were 16 when Cujo came out???? Humm..."Well, technically it came out 4 years early. But still....
Well, more than my age, my back makes me feel old. I've had 3 surgeries in the last year and a half and heading for one more. :(

Thanks, Nyssa. I'm trying to wait till the beginning of March so I'll have my tax refund for when I'm out of work. But my spine is collapsing forward and I don't know if I can wait. This better be the last! :(

Its awesome that you can still work, though. I hope you are able to hold on until March, but I hope that doesn't put you in a dangerous position.
I had severe scoliosis that had curved so bad, my back was in the shape of an S. That put such a strain on my back! It caused stenosis and made my back so weak I was actually told I had the back of an 86 year old! I was like "what happens when I'm 86?"

Very true. It's always interesting when someone new comes to a classic and then complains about an old trope, etc. Not really paying attention to the pub date.
