colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments For me it depends on the horror. I like ghost stories and suspense type things. (But not if I'm by myself.)

Don't like slasher flicks and torture-porn is right out.

Wouldn't say it's a go-to genre in any way, though.

I'm right there with you Colleen. I don't mind when people die in gruesome ways in horror books and movies, but I dislike it when the gore is just for the sake of itself. Saw and Hostel type movies just do nothing for me. But High Tension is one of the most brutal and gory movies I've seen, but it's got an interesting story and plot.

message 3413: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Can't stand gore. Had to stop watching Hemlock Grove - completely shocked myself by getting through the entire first season. The images stain my brain. I can still see the cigar cutter scene from Darkman, umpteen years ago.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I love a few gory eighties flicks, but they tend to be either campy/funny (Evil Dead 2, April Fool's Day), or creepy (The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street). Straight up splatter doesn't work for me, so I only watched the first Saw (meh) , skipped Hostel (liked Cabin Fever, though), and walked out of the Nightmare remake.
Love me some creepy, though!

We have been watcing Ash vs. the Evil Dead, which is fairly gorey for the sake of it, but I agree that the humor makes it more hokey than disturbing, for the most part.

And, like Becky, I can deal with gore if it serves a purpose. I flinch and wince at broken bones, though.

Not into the Saw movies, though I did think the second was better than the first. More of a story. I don't think I ever saw past the third one, though, and I barely remember that.

Never bothered with Hostel or any of those.

Did see Drag Me to Hell, which was pretty gross, but also somewhat offset by the humor.

I was also subjected to House of 1,000 Corpses. Unfortunately, Jer does like him some slasher and exploitation type flicks. We both felt dirty after Devil's Reject, though.

message 3416: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I don't get slasher flicks either. My wife like them. She'd always like horror movies and these seemed to be an extension of that to her. I like action movies and she'd say she didn't like those. I never got how she could have problems with people in a shoot out but a torture death or chainsaw killing... Different people I suppose. She'd watch stuff I'd leave the room for.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Just talking here. It's 1 AM and I'm not sleepy. I occasionally have depression trouble and it's been set off again. Not sleepy but during the day I just feel like being alone. I rolled up in my room most of the day. I don't really have anyone to talk to about it. My closest friend moved and I can't really talk to the other pastors (I'm an assistant pastor so I'm the one people need to be able to talk to).

Just sitting here in the middle of the night and needed to unload.

message 3420: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Why do you feel like you can't talk to the other Pastors? Isn't that supposed to be a reciprocal relationship? Or do you think that they would lose trust in you if they discover that you have things you're struggling with too? (That would be shitty if that's the case.)

Either way, you need to be able to talk to someone... is there maybe a county health facility that offers counselling services that you could look into?

I totally get that. I was sent to a specialist for my ankle. They don't accept any insurance at all. O_O It was over $700 for two visits. They scheduled me for a 3rd but I cancelled it. I'm still paying off the first 2.

Hey, Mike, I feel your pain. I was first diagnosed with chronic depression at age five (no, seriously) and have the same problems, right down to insomnia/dysomnia. Unfortunately, I don't have faith to fall back on, but I have alot of friends and relatives who either have dealt with similar issues or are super kind and open-minded.
Quick! What do you get when you combine an insomniac, an agnostic and a dyslexic?

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments Sorry, I just had to. I compulsively add levity to bleak situations, and it's an old favorite of mine. Some may view the compulsion as compensation, it may be a coping mechanism, I just view it as part of my Irish ancestry.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Going to vent a little and hopefully start a riot that will shake Disney and Marvel...

I've mentioned I'm a bit OCD and tend to be a collector. I'm also a comic book fan from the (so called) Silver Era (1960s) and I've really liked most of the marvel movies of late. i was "browsing" on line thinking of getting action figures of the Avengers to add to my over crowded shelves. I'm especially a Captain America fan but wanted to get the Avengers...

I found all of them except strangely a good figure of Black Widow. At first I figured that most had sold out over Christmas and the toys simply hadn't been restocked. But upon doing a search i found that BW was apparently given sort of "short shrift" in the action figure department.

So comic book fans and especially feminist comic book fans are a little up in arms.

I don't blame them. The character is a big part of the movies. Downer. Haven't ordered any yet.

message 3440: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes Those jerks!

I'm guessing the marketing logic was. Girls don't read comic books. Boys do. Boys don't like pink. Boys will never buy a female superhero character. End of product line development for Black Widow.

I think its stupid, but I see my son and you know what, even though I use all the crayons when we sit around drawing and use all the characters when we play Lego. That stereotype is still ingrained in him. He almost never uses pink in coloring. He doens't think the female Lego figures are cool. I don't get it. The only reason he would want a Wonder Woman Lego set is for the invisible jet she has and at that point Batman would borrow the keys and never return it.

Some lessons are a struggle in this world.

message 3441: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments There was an even bigger stink with the Star Wars merch as Rey was left out of a lot of the lines, including the Monopoly game. Some Star Wars execs were arguing that it was because they didn't want to give away any spoilers, but most people are calling shit on that because everyone knew she was the protag from the trailers.

But, yeah, like with Black Widow they have the motorcycle she flew out of the jet, but they have Cap riding it instead, or something.

Aside from the fact that it stereotypes boys into a particular mold, it also ignores the fact that girls are also into comic book movies and would themselves buy some merch. And it doesn't freaking have to be pink.

message 3442: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I remember being a kid when the Star Wars figures first came out. I got them all up until it was time to get Princess Leia to have the set. I remember feeling really weird about owning a "doll".

But OCD won out and I had to complete my set! Seriously though, it didn't warp me.

(That was other stuff that did that ;)

message 3447: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I saw a couple of articles on the motor cycle. One article on line even had the scene where Black Widow drops out of the plane on the bike. Then the toy release did have Cap (of course cap rides a bike so that's there).

If you can afford the $400 line of hero figures (not action figure toys) then BW is included with the rest, and they're nice. That said I can't spend that kind of money on Avengers decor.

By the way, I doubt Black Widow would wear much pink...
