Nyssa | 2023 comments So I took this and I got this:

A Little OCD: "Although you don't tend to get stuck on imperfect things, they do annoy you sometimes.
You can always spot the weak spot, and you use that quality to your advantage in day to day situations.
However, sometimes this habit can become a little distracting and negative. We advise you to pay more attention to these situations and try to avoid them.

What made me grimace and then laugh, was when I first went to the page it didn't load all the way (only showing about 1/4 of the colorful title), and, for a moment, I honestly thought that was the test.
LOL smh

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I answered that none of them but the sneeze and dirty hand bother me, apparently that makes me the clinical definition of OCD. Yeah I somehow doubt that.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I am also the clinical definition of OCD. But then again... I know that. I'm not extreme or anything, but I do have trouble with some things. I can't relax if the house isn't clean and seeing things sitting where they shouldn't sit makes me itch.

And don't even get me started on packing.... I just packed last night for a trip to Grand Cayman that I'm leaving for tonight. I get so anxious while packing. I have to have a very detailed list, and then I have to print two copies. I have to go through it all a week before, and then pack it all the day before, going through it again. Then I have to go through and check it all off on the list again just to be sure. Then I have to have a separate list that I make while I pack, very detailed, about what I have to add (and to which bag) before I leave.

I've gotten to the point where I just have 2 of everything toiletry wise (2 brushes, hair driers, flat irons, etc.) so that I can pack it all and not have to put it on my "add before you leave list". That list stresses me out. Why? I have no idea. All that is on it for today is to add my makeup bag, kindle and iPhone chargers, and make sure I have my kindle and iPhone. Seriously. Why does that stress me out? And why do I want to go home, unpack it all, and redo it one more time just to be sure?

Yep, crazy Dawn. With some things... Most of the time I'm completely normal, I swear. I'm just irrationally angry because of the anxiety when I'm packing. Maybe the only person ever to need Xanax just to pack a suitcase :P

You are a very practical thinker, who doesn't get stuck in your old ways and you never stop evolving.
You are relaxed, easy going, and whimsical. You know that life is hard enough, and you shouldn't sweat over the little things. Good for you!!"

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've been watching Obsessed on Netflix. Those people on that show have SERIOUS OCD. Not "I like things to be this way and get anxious if they aren't" which is perfectly normal, but "I can't function if I don't have the USB flash drive and mouse pointing NW and touching each other, while simultaneously 1.12 inches from the right edge of my computer, and have to 'wipe off' the bad thoughts that an El Camino makes me have, and haven't thought about my brother in years because if I think about him, bad things will happen to my mom."

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL But how accurate is that test, really, when it tells me that I'm the clinical definition of OCD, and only two of the images bothered me? The uncovered sneeze is gross and unhygienic, so yeah, that's going to bother me. That doesn't make me OCD. The nasty stacked dishes didn't even bother me in an "it makes me anxious and feel like I need to do something about it" way. I'd clean it because it's what should be done, but it's not a COMPULSION.

Nyssa | 2023 comments My understanding is that it's a spectrum, with some of the same underlying issues across the board.

Just like with Autism...

My eldest has Aspergers. The only obvious sign is his missing subtle social cues. We have no behavior issues (other than normal teenager stuff) and his academic issues tend to flair up when he's feeling particularly stressed ( which can be hard to gauge as the kid is stressed all the time). We know he's hit the wall when his grades start to decline (he's never had services provided at school - but that's another is story). He is considered "very high functioning", yet the therapist keeps reminding us that it's still Autism, and despite his good grades, and pleasant disposition, he will have challenges with some things that we take for granted, period.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nicki wrote: "I feel like OCD the actual psychiactric disorder needs a new name at this point, like they're doing with chronic fatigue syndrome, because there's a world of difference between 'It really bothers me when things aren't organised / hygienic / etc.' -- which is based on something rational even when it's taken to excess -- and 'I have to turn the light switch on and off five times when I enter a room or something bad will happen to my family', and too many things now use OCD as shorthand for the former."

Exactly. And it seems like people like to claim OCD even when it's just that they want something done or organized a particular way. I've done it, though I have never intended it in a serious way. And now that I've been watching this show about people who really truly struggle with this, it makes me feel bad that I've joked about it.

The same with ADHD - though I've never claimed that one myself. Had the label applied to me once though and it blew my mind, and I wanted to say, "No, I don't have ADHD - I'm just not interested in what you're talking about."

I think that's partially because it sounds better than anal retentitve.

I've never had the label thrown at me, per se, but I have been told I have a short attention span because I don't like some book or other.

I'm always like, "No, when I'm engaged I have a wonderful attention span. I just have a really low boredom threshold."

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That is kind of funny in a... disturbing way. LOL

Anyway, I do still kind of feel bad for using the term like that though, because of exactly the kind of thing you describe, Nicki. It's like it's not really a real problem if everyone has it, you know? it's normal to be "slightly OCD", or something. It's like it diminishes the meaning of the term by being so overused.

I dunno if I'm explaining myself well. Probably not. I'm just saying that I never really understood OCD before, and I still don't think that I really do - I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist... I just watched some on TV. But the extent of my OCD knowledge was basically comprised of what I've learned from society's use of the term and the movie As Good As It Gets. And that's mostly focused on the bad luck avoidance, organization, and anti-germ bits that it makes it SEEM normal, so I was shocked to see how it affects some people on that show... I never realized how utterly debilitating it is.

I like to think ORGANIZED.

I'm sorry, but the dish photo is disgusting. From what smells and growths there are to just the plain I feel like chipping all my dishes when this collapses at some point. I'm okay with some mess, but that's just pathetic.

Most of the photos annoyed me from a plain bad design perspective. As a bit of a photographer and painter design matters and I notice a lot of stuff no one else does. It's why I do that stuff.

message 2626: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL I think that that test is just random anyway. I took it again just now, and answered everything the EXACT SAME WAY... and this time it says I'm not OCD at all.

message 2628: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I *think* that part of the problem is what you guys mentioned: anal retentive sounds derogatory.

I *think* the other part of it is what Nyssa mentions: there's a range from highly functional to completely dysfunctional.

My BFF is diagnosed OCD and he doesn't have anywhere near the issues that those people on TV do. We also have to remember that the people on TV are chosen BECAUSE they are highly dysfunctional - making for more interesting TV.

I've some issues with getting obsessed over things - I'm not as bad as my BFF but I know I have these issues so I try to stop myself from getting completely crazy over stuff cause I know it can go badly. Am I OCD? I think I'm somewhat - but that could just be other issues. I'm not diagnosed with it.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) This is true, MrsJ - I think there is a broad range... But then I think that there's a lot of misappropriation of the term as well and a lot of people who use it as shorthand to explain being particular in some way. But it does bother me that quizzes like the one that sparked this whole discussion seem to be saying that if you click 4 for these pictures, indicating that they "bother you" - for ANY reason - that means you're OCD. But, really, how is it going to know WHY I'm bothered by an image, and what it actually says about my mental state? Maybe I'm bothered by the dirty dishes stacked up not because I need things to be clean and orderly and not gross, but rather because I hate smoking and there's a dirty ashtray right there? Or maybe the concrete barrier picture bothers me because I hate construction zones and all the headaches that come from them. Or the snake picture because I hate snakes in general, and it has nothing to do with the crack pattern he's following.

Anyway, it's likely just in fun and I'm probably overanalyzing it... what does THAT say about me? :P

I get what you mean, though.

And the funny thing is - people who are "neat freaks" usually are not OCD. My BFF? OMG. His old apt could have been shut down as a health hazard but he IS OCD. Most of the people I've known IRL who are OCD don't have clean fetishes - but some of them have cleaning fetishes.
