Marvel has come under heavy fire over a cover for its forthcoming Spider-Woman series by an artist known primarily for his erotic art. The cover shows the superhero in what is being described as a "blatantly sexualised" pose, and "a prime example of why people continue to think superhero comics are for horny men only".
A variant cover for the first comic in the series by the artist Milo Manara, reputed for his erotic illustrations, was revealed by the news site Comic Book Resources earlier this week. The cover shows Jessica – according to publicity for the series, "a woman with a mission" who "just won't abide … being a target" – on all fours, in a skin-tight red outfit.

I mean, that's not really what I would call skin-tight... that's more what I would call painted on. Seriously, even skin tight clothes aren't going to show back dimples and ass cleavage in THAT much detail.
But that aside, how else are you supposed to climb up the side and over the top of a building other than how she is doing it? LOL

@Marvel: and the buff guys in skin-tight suits are?
What we are seeing is the result of objectifying women for decades and centuries. It's just the one-up-manship down the path from the original pulp fiction covers. We've been selling sex since the beginning of advertising. If we want to change that we need to all vote with our choices and it's going to take longer than we are on the planet and probably longer than our kids and their kids. We can't undo generations of this stuff this year.

"
Probably not "face down, ass up" with my crotch spread at such an...inviting angle. I've seen porn with legs more closed than that, lol.

A blogger and artist redraws unbelievable covers to make them anatomically functional, suitable to gravity, etc. It was quite interesting.

I like the corrected version. It considers that women have organs and ribcages, I like that. I consider them important in my everyday life.

WHAT! I thought women were cobbled together via sorcery and science... i thought that they had no need of norma human consumption, thus the lack of organs and normal bone structure! have i been lied to?!?

Look, I'm no scientist but I'm pretty sure women are made of exactly one rib and flesh. That's in the BIBLE.

OMG! You are right! I can't belive I forgot that! *kneels down and begins self flagillation while reciting the lord's prayer in Latin*

That reminds me of when I was a kid in Catholic school, and I genuinely believed men had one less rib than women.

Too horrifying to find a publisher during Laura Ingalls Wilder's lifetime. Even with the success of her children's series, the memoir was shopped around for decades before anyone was willing to take a chance on the content?!?! What is in that memoir?!

lol, Well clearly the focal point is supposed to be the ass cleavage. The artist doesn't intend you to actually look at her face. In fact, she may as well not have one. After all, isn't that all a woman is? Breats-Ass-Vagina?
P.S. for anyone who doesn't know me, I am merely attempting to point out how ludicrous this level of objectification of women is.

Daphune's self esteem would not depend on that. But it would speak to Fred's attitude and reality.
My wife had thyroid problems and later diabetes, she got very heavy and I didn't leave her...or stop loving her. Her self esteem took a beating from "other people" and all I did was try to help her see she was more than a size.

This country is too caught up in appearances. "
My grandma is into appearances. She has always had a problem with how I look, even when I was young. Something was always either too big or not big enough or perfect enough.
I have a roundish face and I always have. Even when I'm thin my face is a little round. Right now I'm not as thin as when I was a kid...so I have what can look like a slight double chin.
OMG. This drives my grandmother CRAZY. She wants me to exercise my jaw to thin out my chin. She tells me, "When I was your age I had the thinnest chin around."
O_O
Thinnest. Chin.
Once - when grandma was hounding me about something (I think it was my butt) my aunt comes in and apparently had heard more than enough. She stormed into the room and interrupted grandma (which almost never happens) and told her, "Does any of that make a difference?? She's still the same person and we still love her. So what if she never becomes a model?? That's never going to change how I feel."
I swear, just writing that brings tears to my eyes. And when I get down on myself I try to think about that moment.

The artist who drew the variant cover for the upcoming Spider-Woman series responded. He was interviewed for an Italian blog, (I think). The Mary-Sue used an online translater and the basic gist was this... He does many of the typical things. He believes women would find his cover sexy, doesn't understand why people are worried about his images when there are other things to talk about like Ferguson, Ebola, etc. This isn't the most erotic thing he has ever drawn, its the same art he's been doing for forty years, blah blah blah. My head wanted to explode!
However, the reason I'm going to try the comic when it comes out is a) Jessica Drew is an awesome character and b) the actual writer responded on twitter saying that he has no control over the covers, he agrees it is not the best and hopes that people will look past it to give the comic a try. Brave and cool!
I then looked at a photo of a dancing Groot funko to cheer myself up. SIGH! Much happier!

But...I finally went ahead and okayed it. Within the hour he sent me a book link. So...I dropped him. I get so many of those. I'm getting hypersensitive to anyone in any group who starts to tell us about their book.

But...I..."
I do the same thing. I also keep people who look like authors in limbo for some time.
