Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Pop quiz! Without googling the proper etiquette...

You get an invitation to a wedding in the mail. You are unable to make it. How do you proceed?

a) Do not send back RSVP card, that let's them know you aren't coming.
b) Send back RSVP card with 0 attending indicated.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Yep, so clearly b... Or so I thought.. Until over half of the invites I sent out didn't get returned by the cutoff. I'm talking 40 of 80 families. It's a 50/50 split right now as I laboriously contact each person to find out it they are coming so I can come up with our final count.... Half of them say oh yeah, I can come, didn't I send that back? No. The other half say no, I can't come, that's why I didn't send it back. It doesn't work that way!!

Don't people know what a hassle it is when they don't return the RSVP's? I do not have time to send out 40 emails or make 40 phone calls. I'm busy enough planning an extremely expensive party with free booze for you to enjoy. I need to know yes or no for sure, not maybe. It's a for real reception.. Plated dinners.. There is no maybe. Maybe is no. Get with it.

Annoying.

Oh yeah. RSVPs are a hell unto themselves.

:(

I did the same thing - and some people STILL didn't RSVP. Also, a lot of people who RSVP'd didn't show and others who didn't RSVP did show.

:(

No, they don't care.

I had a cousin - after beating me down to invite his NEW GF - not show at all and not say a damn thing until I called him the day before. Why? He had to work, he says. Then he FB me and says that his GF was a bitch and made him not come cause she wanted to go somewhere else.

pffft.

message 1673: by Laurel (last edited Jun 04, 2014 10:20AM) (new)

Laurel Off topic,

If anyone follows Diana Rowland, she's had to hire a Hollywood Lawyer to send a friendly "were you aware you were infringing upon my intellectual property?" to the CW and Rob Thomas (creator of Veronica Mars). Their new show iZombie (which I was very excited about) is in fact nothing like the graphic novel storyline. It's about a white haired girl who becomes a zombie, goes to work for a morgue to gain access to brains, then begins working with a coroner (and possibly the police) to solve crimes. Sound familiar?

I'm starting the iZombie series. I'd watch the heck out of that show, or a White Trash Zombie show. But if they're going to mash two properties together, the writers are owed their due.

The best solution is a small wedding. That was our plan. We had 19 people (including the Pastor and his wife) at the dinner table. :)

message 1675: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) The best solution is a bouncer. Sit Bubba at the door and have him check people against the RSVP'd guestlist. Ain't on the list, you ain't gettin' in.

RSVP and don't show up? Send 'em a bill for their share of what you paid since they said they were going to come.

I'll be curious to see what comes of this. The girl in iZombie looks like she has white hair, and she does try and solve murders...

But the coroner's office and working with a detective stuff is definitely more White Trash Zombie.

message 1681: by Laurel (new)

Laurel The CW show is also missing all the iZombie sidekick characters (ghost friend, spot). The more I read, the more it sounds like a White Trash Zombie property that happens to look more like the lead character from iZombie.

message 1682: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments But there's also the getting the person's memories from eating the brains, and the MC in the show is a medical student and not an alcholic deadbeat...

I'm not saying there's not some infringing going on, and I definitely thought of WTZ when I read the blurb - I'm just not sure it's enough to win a lawsuit... but, then, I'm also a bit sketchy on how the law works in these cases.

message 1683: by Laurel (new)

Laurel True. I'm sad for Rowland. Both properties, actually. They're incredibly interesting and can stand on their own. I'm worried that a mash-up may be taking the quirky, uniqueness out of each and make it more like a darker, zombie police procedural.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah. I just got iZombie out of the library, so I haven't read it yet - but I don't know why you'd cut the ghost friend and were-terrier. It's kinda what made me want to pick up the books.

Mine too! It's a nightmare, tbh. There are so few books that they are only arranged by Author name. No genre separation.

message 1690: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Inter loan between around 15 - 20 libraries and the selection is still sparse.

Mine isn't that bad, luckily. I think it's major issue is that it's just a small building, and it's close to a school so they have a lot of reference and history and biography stuff, so their fiction sections are pretty paltry.

For the longest time I never used the library at all 'cause I was sort of scared of ILL (this was back before you could do it all online), and my local never had anything.

Now I can get most stuff from the library, except self-pubs and GNs - I just have to wait for my hold to come through.

message 1692: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes My library system has it.

Our system spans the entire province and they will even go and get stuff if it is not within the provincial system. Either through another library system or they even purchase sometimes. I haven't requested anything that hasn't been within the province though.

I don't read a lot of new stuff though which probably means my probability of being happy with the selection is higher. Sometimes it pays to be a good decade behind everyone.

We can do both inter-system and inter-state. Between the two I usually can find most stuff.

That's great. Our library near me is NOT tiny and it's about 1 year old. Obviously the dang thing was built based on criminal political behavior rather than library requirements. The majority of the library was given over to a bunch of meeting rooms...that cost money to use. :( And have of the single level where the books are housed is given over to kiddie stuff (books, games, etc). Very little is set up for Adult reading.

Laurel Seeking wisdom,

I'm closing in on draft 1 of the first book I'm actually going to try and edit, second draft, third draft, etc. I have already taken steps to try and become more involved in my local writing community - go out to the local NaNoWriMo events, library author nights and so on. But are there other ways to find beta readers that are a) competent and b) not your close friends? I want to eventually find a writing group as well. I'm hoping the NaNo events will bring me success.

Wisdom?

There's a blog and they have a huge writer's board which is moderated. They seem welcome to new people and give advice. There's even a post that tells which pubs to avoid and things like that.

I really liked the first couple seasons of the UK version, but didn't like it much after Aidan left.

I only watched the first season of the US version then bailed. Meh.

But it's a ghost, werewolf and vampire living together - so maybe they thought it would be too similar?
