Madi | 220 comments Oh I totally agree that God disciplines, but I don't know.. Punishment just doesn't seem like the same thing.... To me it just carries a kind of a controlling or abusive connotation.... But that may be past experiences voicing themselves when it comes to that word.... Hmmm, I don't know..

yeah punishment can sound harsh

message 103: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Well, technically, discipline and punishment are defined slightly differently, but they are synonyms.
"dis·ci·pline[ díssəplin ]
training to ensure proper behavior: the practice or methods of teaching and enforcing acceptable patterns of behavior
order and control: a controlled orderly state, especially in a class of schoolchildren
calm controlled behavior: the ability to behave in a controlled and calm way even in a difficult or stressful situation"
"pun·ish·ment[ púnnishmənt ]
penalty for doing something wrong: a penalty that is imposed on somebody for wrongdoing
act of punishing: the act or an instance of punishing
rough use: rough treatment or heavy use"

I think of it this way: I punish my child for doing wrong as a method of discipline. God does the same with us.
"And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful." Hebrews 12:5-11

And in Matthew 25:26, it says, “Then they (meaning sinners) will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

So, to me, God does punish.

When we make a mistake or disobey God, He's not going to let us get away with it. We all have to suffer the consequences of our actions.

Wow, I love that letter! Shared the link on my facebook. :)

Also that article on lying is good... It is sad how lying has become part of "the norm". Good point about whether we stress honesty or appearance.
"We want to appear like we have all the “big” sins—usually sexual ones—under control. And when we start a hierarchy of sins, it’s easy for honesty, one of the “little” virtues, to fall by the wayside." ==> True enough!

Rachel I don't agree with all of these things, but most of them are great.

I especially like "15. Use social media sparingly and in a way that only further dignifies you as a woman. In an age of digital exposure, we make the mistake of becoming too present in social media. If it’s not going to present you in a positive light, don’t post it."

"25. Cross your legs." --> lol. So I know a couple of people who wear shorter skirts and sit like a man.

"48. Be the kind of woman you’d want your daughters to be and your sons to date. Hold yourself to a higher accountability and serve as a role model for other young women." --> I always find it so awesome when I meet a woman who is so obviously a real lady. I automatically look up to them.

I'm hurt and so for a few weeks, instead of taking gym class, I have to find and respond to health-related articles. Yes, it's as boring as it sounds, but today I found a short article about bird flu in South Korea. I'm sharing it because I think it's good to be aware of what diseases are out there in case they spread. Sorry if that sounds morbid...

No problem. :)

Here's an inspiring article. It has a little bit of profanity (a documentary mentioned has a swear word in the title), but it's a really cool story.
