Q&A with Susan Ee Dec 7-8

Susan, is it true that Angelfall at the beginning was supposed to be a trilogy? and somehow it became a 5-book series? if yes, what caused the change of plan?

How did you come up with such a compelling character like Raffe? He's one of best male heroes I read about in a long time. Did you base him off someone you knew or did you just take all your favorite male qualities and just put them together and created Raffe?

1. Raffe is an archangel. He lived since the beginning of the world. Or always. Dunno. Doesn't matter. He lived for a long time. Because he is immortal. Soooooo my question is did he date someone there (I mean heaven or wherever they live)? Did he date some girl angel there? I even had a terrible idea, like what if he is married or something like that. I tried to read about Archangel Raphael on Wikipedia. To find information.Like maybe he had a wife. But didn't find anything.Surely the kiss with Penryn wasn't his first. Right?:) actually I would be insanely happy if it was. But I don't want to be naive. So if he kissed and done stuff, then with whom did he do it?
I know, I know. This is stupid question, but still I am curious!:))
I love these books! Susan thank you for the world you created!
Thank you Erika! For such an opportunity!
I am really grateful! :))

I love your books so much and I keep obsessing about them. They are one of the few books I could re-read right after finishing them and they always leave me craving for more.
So naturally my first question will be as many others will ask: When does the third book come out? and do you already have ideas for the title??
I have read somewhere that you held a contest for the cover of Angelfall (correct me if I'm wrong), so I was wondering if you did have a part in the development for the cover of World After?
I really liked Josiah in Angelfall, will we ever hear or see from Josiah again? I would really love that.
Do you already know the basic direction where your story is going and how it will end or do you just develope things as you write and invent the story?
If you would be caught in the events of an angel apocalypse, in order to survive and get food would you join the street gangs, join the resistance or be a trophy girl/servant to the angels?? Or would you chose a totally different path and what would that be?
Thanks for taking your time and answering our questions =D

Is there something symbolic about all the sets of twins in the story? There's Dee and Dum and of course Uriel's obsession with matching pairs.
What was your inspirations for giving Penryn super ninja martial arts skills? (I love it!) Do you have any martial arts training if so what belt do you have?
Also, are there any independent that keep signed copies of your book in stock? I'm a big dork so I love having signed copies of my favorite books but so far I haven't been able to find any Angelfall or World After ones.
Thanks again and have a great Christmas

I read Penryn and the End of Days series just recently and I'm such a fan. :)
I'd like to ask some questions:
1. Seeing as the apocalypse is upon Penryn's world and God can supposedly see everything that's happening, is there some kind of explanation why God hasn't meddled yet?
2. Has there been religious groups (or anything similar) that criticized your books because of how you illustrated angels? If there was, what did they say and what was your answer?
Thank you so much for your time!
I'm soooooo excited for the next book! :D xx
How did you create your characters Raffe and Penryn? Oh and do you listen to music when you write, if you do what do you listen to?

Are you done writing book 3 and just waiting for it to be published next or next year? If not, is it atleast 50% done?

As a teacher, particularly at a school in a low income area, I have noticed a growing trend in teenage illiteracy. So I must start by thanking you for putting out engaging and exciting novels targeted at a YA/NA audience.
What are your thoughts on reading in an age when technology is always expanding, particularly among teens, and do you think this will change the way that authors write (or people read for that matter) in the future?
Thanks!

I'm bundled up against the cold on my couch, wrapped in a blanket and watching the sky lighten. I love being warm on a cold day—there's something decadent about that. :)
Okay, on to your questions!

Great question, Jolene. I think to most of us, even though we know the formal names of our parents, their "names" are really Mom and Dad. I think the younger you are, the more true this tends to be. The series is told in first person from Penryn's perspective. She's 17 and very family oriented. She'll always think of her mother as Mom or Mother. I think it's also common and natural to refer to someone's mother as "your mom" rather than by the mother's name. Someone else might refer to her by name, but so far that hasn't happened, and I'm fine with that.

I had originally guessed it would be 5 books, but now I'm saying it'll be 3-5 books. A story has a natural beginning and a natural ending. I'll know it when I see it, and I don't want to force it into a set number of books.

i want to thank you for the amazing books you have written.as all the other already said i loved it and i can't stop re-reading them.i think it's one of the best,no let me correct myself the best angel and post-apocalyptic books i have ever read!>///<
i want to ask why of all angels did you chose Raffe(Raffael)?and why the name Penryn?
thank you for this oppurtunity!!!!^_^

I don't know (sorry!!!). The release date on Goodreads is incorrect because no one--not even the publishers--knows yet. You can sign up for my New Release Notification on the right sidebar of my blog. If you've already signed up for it, no need to do it again. If you're on the list, I'll send you a note when book 3 comes out.
I promise I'm writing as fast as I can!

Thanks, Jolene! :)

One more question. I love that we get to glimpse Raffe's thoughts a feelings through Pooky Bear...(hilarious name!) are we likely to see more of those in the next books? I really love your humour in this series!

The oldest stories of angels have them associated with the destruction of entire cities and turning people into pillars of salt. Angels are described as playing an essential role in ancient stories of the end of the world. I thought it would be interesting to bring it back into modern times.

My question is:
Which part of the books was your favorite to write?

Like all of you, I read a lot. Eventually, I realized that I was searching for a specific kind of story. It's so much easier and more fun in many ways to read a good story than to write one. But despite all the great stories out there, I couldn't find the one that I was searching for. So here I am, writing it. :)

I sometimes meet my characters when they're already fully formed, and that was the case with Penryn's mom. When I met her, it felt right because Penryn is fire-forged, and her mother had a lot to do with that.
Hi, Susan!! I'd like to say thank you for writing such wonderful books and inspiring me to go ahead and be a writer, and also to say that World After was so amazing, it exceeded my expectations!!
My question is: Have there been any developments for the movie adaptation? Is it still happening?
Thank you!! :) Much love~

Cute question, Saida! But guys like Raffe don't kiss and tell... :D

You are right. I like mystery! Ohhh Raffe ... I am melting)

I was kind of curious... Do we ever get to find out what Pookie Bear was called when Raffe wielded her? :)

How has the publishing industry been treating you, and what do you think of the ongoing self-publishing revolution?

thank you so much for doing this!
I wanted to ask if we're going to see more'pooky bear' and Penryn bonding in the next book?
I really liked their dynamic and it was fun to read how the sword teased Penryn with the Kiss and all the dreams! That was such a great idea :D

Yes, Angelfall's cover was discovered through a contest! I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. And yes, I was very involved with the cover of World After, although I had less control over it than I did with the first cover.
I really liked Josiah in Angelfall, will we ever hear or see from Josiah again? I would really love that.
..."
Yay--a Josiah fan! I love that guy. :) I tried to fit him into World After but his parts ended up being cut to streamline the story. I don't know if he'll make it into the rest of the series. I hope so.

Thank you Susan for creating such amazing world and characters!!!

Thanks for taking time to share with us!

I had a white belt once. :D I have a black-belt consultant who reads over my fight scenes and gives me tips. Also, I take classes as needed for research. For Angelfall, I used techniques from self-defense classes. For World After, I took a sword fighting class, a zombie apocalypse class (yes, there is such a thing!), and got knife-fighting tips from an expert.

Waterstones, Piccadilly in London might still have some signed copies. Otherwise, I will happily sign copies for bookstores in the San Francisco bay area, Tahoe, Reno, LA, or NYC--just have them contact me. Or I may be able to do it via mail if they contact me through my blog--ask your local bookstore what works for them. Due to the overwhelming logistics, I can't offer signed books to individual readers via mail (I'll happily sign at an event, of course!), but I'll be glad to sign for bookstores so you can get the books through them. Thanks!
