Hi all,
The current series group read book (Dark Fire - Matthew Shardlake #2) is slated to end on 12/31. There hasn't been a ton of participation, so what I would like to know is: do we want to continue with this series (3 more books), or choose a different series to start?

Go ahead and treat this as a pseudo-nomination thread. If you want to continue, just "nominate" Shardlake. If you want to read something else, nominate that. If a majority wants to continue, that's what we'll do.

Since we'll need to know soonish in order to do a poll and whatnot (if necessary), I'm going to tally everything up on the 9th, and then put up a poll if that's the will of the people. :)

Also - do we want to keep each book as a 2 month long read, or shorten it to 1 month as the other reads are?

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 218 comments For a nomination, I wonder whether Kristin Lavransdatter is a goer?

It's out either as single book or #1-#3 in the new translation.

I've bought the new translation to get reacquainted with it. Loved it years ago in the old translation.

I'm open to that, Bryn... Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Should we even continue the series group reads? I haven't really been following them, so I'm not sure how many are interested in them as "official" group reads - maybe they'd be better as Buddy Reads?

Thoughts?

Gabriel I liked it and worked okay the first group series. I am not sure what will keep people motivated to read the rest of the books in the series.

Louise | 4694 comments I like the group series read. I couldn't read the second Shardlake book because I was trying to finish HFU degrees but I would love to have the option to continue to participate in the series reads.

I think it was just bad timing. People get super busy around the holiday season.

That said, a series is a commitment. There are currently seven series that I am in the middle of. I have the next installments of these series on my shelf but I just need to get through them. People are hesitant to start a series if they know that the books need to be read on a schedule. It's a very loose, unenforced schedule but still.

I'd be in favor of doing away with the series group reads.

If not, then continue with Shardlake. I hear they're awesome books and my brother has been pestering me nonstop to read them. He generally has good taste in HF.

I'm attempting to bring our previous discussions about a series of books instead of just the individual monthly read. If you would like to participate, I have created a poll made up of books we have already read as a group that are also part of a series. If this is something you are interested in starting back up again, please feel free to leave my any feedback.

Right now I'm just trying to get back to discussing books as a group. I realize that the monthly group read may not always be for everyone. Hopefully this is a way for people to be involved in some sort of group read outside of the monthly read.

I will take the top 10 from this poll and move forward from there:

Jeffrey Walker (jkwalkerauthor) I've been reading my way through Upton Sinclair's 11-VOLUME (!!!) series of "Lanny Budd" novels. Now THAT is a commitment. Sinclair is so witty and insightful, it's not a burden. And this series documents in eye-witness detail WWI, the '20s, Great Depression, rise of fascism, WWII, and the beginnings of the Cold War by an author who knew many of the movers and shakers of the time. And it's oh-so-timely--I find myself sharply inhaling at some spot-on similarity to modern events every time I open one of these books.

Connie (connier) | 52 comments Great idea. I love to read series and it is a lot more fun to read with someone else instead of by yourself. I voted, but could read any of these!

Louise | 4694 comments Agreed, it was hard to pick just one!

The first poll is finished. I have taken the top 10 from that poll and created a new poll.

The top three books from this poll will be our featured series reads. I'm looking for a few volunteers to help moderate the series reads. If this is something you would be interested in doing, please send me a message with the book(s) you would like to help lead discussion for.

I have not started the threads yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to best organize it. I haven't had a ton of time to sit down and think about it. The winter illnesses finally struck my family and the biggest child had to have his tonsils out at 33.

I have been trying to find a slightly organized way to open up threads for the series we have voted to continue with. I have not found one that I really like. I toyed with the idea of creating a new thread for each book in a particular series but The Beekeeper's Apprentice has quite a few book in the series with more being released. I feel like there would just be too many things going on to keep track of. For now I am just going to open a new thread for each series. For this reason, please be sure you are marking spoilers.

I also realize I had asked for group volunteers to lead the discussions. My Goodreads account seems to be acting strange. I have lost all of the private messages I had from people. If you were one of the people who graciously volunteered to help lead discussion, please don't think I ignored you. I just don't know who you are any more. Sorry.

Hi Gretchen - I'm sorry to hear of your GR account disruptions! I had volunteered to lead the discussion for Code Name Verity series if it is one of the series that was voted in.

Haley | 19 comments Might I suggest the Rosie Winter series by Kathryn Miller Haines for a group read once we are done with these series? She has another series that is good, called The Girl Is Murder, though that one is only two books long.

These are actually continuations of the series where we group read the first book. All group reads are run through the nomination and polls which occur in the middle of the month and are thematic.

Jessica | 10 comments I had volunteered to lead if we chose either Pillars of the Earth or Beekeepers Apprentice.
