If you see a book that should be added to the book list, for example a book mentioned on the show or an author referenced on the show, please put your request here and why it should be added and the episode reference. Muchas Gracias!

message 2: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Have we added the Hobbit? Please and thank you!

PS. Great idea! Love this!

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I don't think all of these are on our list:

Michele, could you email me the spreadsheet so it's easier for me to search the bookshelves? Thanks!

Sarah (songgirl7) Episode 2.04
LORELAI: This building is one component of a thirteen million volume collection housed in more than ninety different libraries. It’s the oldest library in the United States and the largest academic library in the world. Breathe, breathe.

RORY: I’m a failure. I am stupid. I am uniformed and ignorant and… I can’t even think of a second synonym for uninformed. I suck. Thirteen million volumes? I’ve read like, what, three hundred books in my entire life and I’m already sixteen? Do you know how long it would take me to read thirteen million books?

LORELAI: But honey, you don’t have to read every one of them. Tuesdays with Morrie? Skip that. Who Moved My Cheese? Just stuff you already know.

RORY: Okay, but every kid coming to Harvard is inevitably reading books, and different books, and I want to be able to converse intelligently with each of them and I can’t do that unless I read books, at least a few from every genre and sub-genre.

LORELAI: Okay, come on. I’m getting you out of here.

RORY: I sleep too much.

LORELAI: No you don’t.

RORY: I’ve been frittering away my whole life.

LORELAI: You don’t fritter.

RORY: Did I mention I suck?

So are we adding every book referenced or mentioned? Because I thought the point was to read what Rory read... the last example were books that Rory SHOULDN'T read according to Lorelai. It's cool if that's the case, but my vote would be for those she read. (Saying this as a participant, not a moderator.)

message 7: by Robbie (new)

Robbie Bashore | 592 comments Can there be two shelves for the group? The official Rory's list shelf and other mentioned books shelf?

message 8: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments I don't think goodreads does customizable shelves for groups yet, but that's a good idea if they ever change things.

Have to say, I don't have much interest in reading books that were specifically trashed on the show, but that may just be me. I don't have a problem reading other books favorably mentioned though.

Tuesdays with Morrie really wasn't as good as the hype might indicate.

Sera Just my humble opinion - Mitch Albom - Eck

I don't see any harm in putting some of those books on there. It's not like we have to read every book on the list. And I think it is highly unlikely we will nominate or choose Who Moved My Cheese for the monthly book read. I think those books were the exception as opposed to the rule. Our group should have a little sense of humor ;)

message 11: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments yeah Sera - couldn't agree more. I was just as unimpressed with The Five People You Meet In Heaven.

Shannon, are you kidding? of course we have to read every book on the list! ;) 2 books a month, 200 books - only 100 months!

If this group still exists in 8 years, I'm buying everyone a beer. you have my word. all 600+ of you. (no gaurantee on beer quality or freshness)

Robbie Bashore | 592 comments Hey, Heather:
When I was in college, there was a beer called Falstaff that was really cheap and had games on the inside of the bottle caps!

Sarah, love that quote. Now I'm starting to think about the number of books I've read and how much I'm lagging behind from the rest of the world. Heh.

I agree with those who support books favorably mentioned on the show. I mean, the list is long enough as it is and I'd like to read all the good books first so I'd be able to converse intelligently with all of you. LOL

That said, I do think that sometimes GG does a little too much of pop culture trashing. But then again the show has received some trashing of its own, being brushed aside as "sappy" or "too girly".

message 14: by Arctic (last edited Feb 13, 2008 08:08PM) (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Robbie: sounds like my kind of beer!

edit so I can feel more like I'm contributing:
more books
even more books (2 pages)

fair warning: many repeats, many possibly most already on our list, but lots of episode citations.

message 15: by Shannon, the founder of fun (back from sabbatical) (new)

Shannon | 254 comments Mod
Artic - yeah 100 months ain't nothing! lol.

Michele could you please post the spreadsheet if you still have it to the google group site? I can't imagine there would be that many books we haven't read yet. Also seeing all the books on the spreadsheet will be an easier way to pick monthly nominations. Maybe we could create some kind of group access wiki where we list all the books by episode and the narration their referred to in - yeah that would be cool. I haven't seen them all organized together like that. Enough rambling here...........

message 16: by Meghan (new)

Meghan My two cents:

Since we tend to pick two books every month - we could stick to the first book being from the 'official list'. We can use the others (mere mentions, trashed, or cited authors) to widen the selection for the second pick.

I'm kind of the mindframe that I would like to get through her official list before we hit up other books.

We really need to be able to customize bookshelves here! Come on Otis! hee

message 17: by Meghan (last edited Feb 16, 2008 05:18PM) (new)

Meghan Oh, and Heather. Two words - Milwaukee's Best. It's what all the poor college students drink in desperate times! heh (Be warned...I believe this is the worst beer ever made...but it's uber cheap...I don't know for sure on the taste though as I have never had to reach to such depths of desperation.)

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Meghan, since you hate beer, would you know a good beer from a bad one? Heh.

message 19: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Shannon, I think a group wiki is a great idea!

In the mean time...maybe someone could just do a post in this folder or somewhere, listing all the books on the group bookshelf, editing it to keep it up to date? I have a bookshelf myself with all of this group's books on it for quick reference, but a post here would be even more convenient.

Must admit I'm not a big beer drinker either. I'm much more of a Hornsby's cider and White Russian girl. My first impulse was to buy everyone a margarita, actually, but I had a feeling that would get expensive quicker than beer. My second thought was jagermeister shots, but again can't beat the price of beer. So beer it is.

sangria could also be fun though...

We call Milwaukee's Best "The Beast." Not sure if this is universal, but down here, you mention "The Beast" and you'll get a MB.

There's this long story...I'll abridge. We had this friend who refused to drink it because it was "too cheap." So my husband blindfolded her and made her drink the beast and a Budweiser, and she couldn't tell the difference. Poser!! HAHA.

message 21: by Erica (new)

Erica Poole | 199 comments You know, if I really had the time, and was bored enough, I think it would be neat to go through and find all the book references in the order they were given and read them that way! But I don't, so I won't....sigh.

message 22: by Shannon, the founder of fun (back from sabbatical) (new)

Shannon | 254 comments Mod
Heather - glad you like the group wiki idea. I think I may look into this a little more. If we could all put our Gilmore Girl knowledge together I think we could come up with a pretty comprehensive book site. And I love the white russians. I feel like "the dude" when I order one up. For christmas when my family came over I made these for everyone and called them white christmases. Tasty!

Alison - oh yeah we called it "the beast" too.

I'm not a beer connoisseur but I have really learned to love stouts, which I used to think were too heavy. Now I absolutely adore some Guinness.

message 23: by Arctic (last edited Feb 20, 2008 11:17AM) (new)

Arctic | 571 comments white christmases...heh. cute. I think I'm gaining a better appreciation of beer as I get older. I used to hate the darker heavier beers, but now I actually prefer them sometimes for the flavor.

I agree Erica, that order sounds good to me too. We could even do episode discussions to go with it! Perhaps once the wiki is up it might be more feasible though.

I was also just comparing my shelf list to the group list and noticed a glaring oversight - no Howl on the group's list! Jess would be heartbroken.

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Howl SHOULD be on the list. It used to be. It's even been nominated before.

message 25: by whichwaydidshego, the sage of sass (new)

Yes, Sarah is right, is was on the list. Someone must have removed it or something. Anyway, it's back.

message 26: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Looks like customizable group shelves are up and running, so maybe Robbie's idea for two shelves can be implemented. :)

Also the group shelf is now sortable which is pretty neat. I recommend taking a look when you get a chance.

message 28: by Meghan (last edited Feb 28, 2008 02:05AM) (new)

Meghan Okay, while farting around on the internet, I found that some girl started a list about we had been discussing to do (books/authors referenced on the show). I have no idea which ones are duplicates to our list or how accurate is the list. It's too difficult to flip back and forth on this site to check (I never got list), so I'm just posting the whole list. I'm not suggesting you add all these. Just thought people might like to peruse it and see what's been mentioned. The numbers mean season and then episode.

Sarah (songgirl7) Thanks for that, Meghan. Interesting that Mailer's not on there.

message 30: by Meghan (new)

Meghan I know. I should have posted the website link and now it's lost. I'll have to google it again. There were a couple of errors on the list that I had to fix so maybe she just didn't realize he was an author?

But I thought it was a good jumping off point.

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments Artic -- the shelf/shelves are sortable? I'm not seeing where/how that works.

ETA: I'm thinking the moderators can search the shelves but not group members. Is that it?

message 33: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments To sort, you just click on the column title at the top (such as 'title' or 'author'). It sorts alphabetically, forwards and backwards. Now we just need to get them to list more than 20 books per page...

I'm not sure if searching shelves is a feature yet either.

You know, someone has deleted some of our books because I KNOW that both The Nanny Diaries and Howl were on the list at one time... Grrr!

message 39: by Meghan (new)

Meghan You know, you should change the feature to make it only that the moderators can add/delete books. Since we have this thread, everyone else can just ask here to have things added. With as many members as we have, we have no idea if someone just adds to a group and then decides to make "changes" without really knowing what the group is about.

Well I'm not sure what to do about it because if you do an "add book" it says it's already on the shelf, but when I look for it on the shelf, it's not there. I tried re-adding it, and it didn't work. So it's some weird nanny glitch. (Always blame the nanny.)
