Sheryl Farnan | 2 comments Read this book some time ago - I think it was also a TV miniseries, as I have specific "pictures" in my memory of certain scenes. A woman in the early 20th century learns to heal through herbal medicine. Fuzzy on this, but there may be some link to Native American heritage here, meaning she learned her healing practice from "Indian" mother or aunt... Her husband either dies or deserts her and she has to forge a life for her and her young daughter. She moves to a nearby town that has no doctor or care of any sort and establishes a practice. She earns trust among her community and when a medical doctor comes to town, there is conflict. He soon realizes that he has to work with her rather than against her and grows to respect her. Over time her daughter grows up and it's either the daughter or a grand daughter who follow in the woman's path, but goes to medical school. Even with medical training, the young woman learns about medicines and healing in new and different ways from the older woman. The older woman eventually establishes a level of solid respect from the established medical community. The story, I think, is told through the memory and flashback of the daughter or grand daughter. It also has themes of suffrage, independence. I woke up this morning with this story in my head! I have no idea why because it would have been late 1980s-to mid 1990s that I would have read this. Any help is much appreciated!!

Aerulan | 1317 comments Ok wild guess here but maybe Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye Gibbons Charms for the Easy Life by Kay Gibbons? I have the book on my TRB list so I haven't read it yet but it sounds similar to what I know of the book, and it has a movie adaptation which is excellent.
