Allan Every day in the run up to Christmas, in the spirit of advent, The Guardian are going to publish extracts from Barnaby Rogerson's Book of Numbers. I thought it'd be interesting to post the links to them in a new thread!

If I'm right, Susan discussed this book in her 'in person' book club, so might be able to elaborate even further on the extracts! :)

That was really interesting, Allan. It's one thing to have an idea and simple understanding of the dating system but it's another to see its history laid out like that.

That was pretty good. It got a few laughs from me.

Thanks again, Allan.

Cathleen | 2409 comments Three seems to be a pretty magical number in composition (both artistic and written). Cool article :) Thanks for posting, Allan.

By the way, I thought the "2" article was really clever. Maybe I should come up with "two things" for each of my courses--before students start taking their finals :)

I was expecting real significance in the fact the values added to 365, but it was just a simple coincidence.

Seraphina I like the idea of five components to your soul and how they live on after death. A nice piece to read to start the day

Allan Back on schedule-number 6!

Cheers again, Allan. There's a lot more religion/mysticism to these than I expected.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Keep them coming, Allan. :)

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

(Standard advent calendar acknowledgement and thanks.)

It makes being Chinese seem like hard work.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank again, Allan.

Seraphina I enjoyed the one about the magpies. Very strange that they eat meat! Sounds like it'd be a very fun book in general to read

I didn't realise the history of astrology went quite so far back as the Sumerians.

@Seraphina. It sounds like a really interesting little book of trivia.
