Zap the zeros and ones on this shiny silver disc with a laser beam and it sounds like the New York Dolls arguing with the Mick Taylor-era Stones about drugs, girls, and who’s headlining, while the Beach Boys and Ronettes laugh and egg them on.

Call ‘em “throwbacks,” but Miss 45 are some of the few remaining survivors of their generation to believe in the spirit, attitude, and redemptive powers of rock and roll in a world gone apeshit over air-brushed, record company-commandeered automatons with shitty names willing to barter their souls, publishing rights, and first borns for fame, infamy, Class 1 narcotics, bling, or a photo op.

Unrestrained manic pop thrills that crackle, chug, stomp, and distort in all the right spots. Stand back and try not to get anything on you.

Sarah | 13814 comments What do you think of the Decemberists album, Janine? I really enjoyed it. There were a bunch of songs that sounded a little reminiscent of other acts, "Hey...is that an REM/Gillian Welch/Wilco song" etc., but all of the influences were bands I like, so I didn't mind.

The brain trust at CBS must've thrown a rod when dreaming up an experimental series of 10" four or five-song EP's back in 1980 called NuDisks but they produced a few winners, namely the Clash's "Black Market Clash," Cheap Trick's "Found All the Parts," and this one from the Continentals, who were never heard from again.

A shame, really, because with production from Tommy Ramone, the title track here - "Fizz Pop (Modern Rock)" - is perhaps THE great lost power pop track of the decade, a chugging, crunchy, sugar-coated kick in the pants, a near-perfect shake-up of guitar pop, punk swagger, and greasy swing.

Mostly hit and miss, cutting through Jim Carroll's pipedream to be a word-fixated, electrified folk singer who does everything but sing - imagine Patti Smith with testicles - is sometimes worth the hassle for those songs where he sounds like he's either trying to outrun an avalanche or catch a bus, i.e., "People Who Died" and "Jealous Twin."
