Might as well jump in and say hello!I've just joined your group, great to find Phellow Phans here on Goodreads! You might have already met me on other POTO message boards as EAAB.
Hope I can join in all the phun on a regular basis, time and writing permitting. LOL!
All the best!
I went to see the musical in NYC just recently and I have not read the book yet...I am 12 turning 13 soon and I was wondering if I should read the book. Is it appropriate for my age? I can read at any level, but is the content okay? It was in the adult section at my local library, and I wasn't sure if I should check it out or not. And is the movie as good as the play?
You would have no issues with the book being appropriate for you Emma. I would start out with the original first.
Then I would recommend Susan Kay's story of Erik. Just have the tissues handy. Personally... I loved the play the best (and I saw it 5 times) the movie is good as well and it also would be appropriate to watch. If you want further "what happened after" types of reads of Erik some will suit your age and others not. I hope this helps? Im sure other group members here can share their thoughts/opinions/recommends as well :)

Okay...that was so helpful. I saw the musical and it's my moms favorite broadway show. She absolutely loves it. I would love to read the book and see the movie. I have the songs "Phantom of the Opera" and "Music of the Night" on my iPod. Those are probably my two favorites. After I saw the musical for the first time, I fell in love with it. I hope to see it many times again in my future. I hope to be on broadway one day as a dancer (or a triple threat: actor, singer, dancer)...and I hope to be in this show. Hopefully it doesn't close anytime soon, which I don't think it will. Thank you for your suggestions...they were helpful...
Did anyone else cry at the end of the musical when Christine chose Raoul over the Phantom...I almost did, I was close to tears. My mom didn't tell me anything except the storyline...I didn't know that was how it was going to end...it was such an emotional show.
Hello. I went to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway over April vacation with my mom and I absolutely fell in love with it!!!!! My friend thinks I'm listening to opera, but I try to tell her that she's wrong. My mom has the whole album, a double disk too, and I remember hearing the music years before we went to Broadway. I have never read the book, but I hope to in my near future.
I'm going to read it but I would feel kind of weird because its in the adult section of my library...
Well it definitely has some adult themes and situations, but nothing vulgar or graphic. Disturbing scenes, some quite scary scenes, but nothing "inappropriate" I would say. As for being in the adult section, it is a piece of classic literature including what I mentioned above, but not an ""adults only XXX" kind of book at all.
Oh, just make sure you're picking up Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera and not Susan Kay's Phantom..whole different ball game right there...
Is it the murder part of the story that is disturbing or scary? Because besides that, I don't really like scary things...but I really want to read it...I fell in love with the music and the whole story when I saw it on broadway a few weeks ago during April vacation.
Honestly, there is a lot more in the book that could be considered scary other than murder. Its not scary like a horror movie, but scary in a deeply moving and dramatic sort of way. But don't be put off by it, it is exciting, fast paced, and a whole lot better than the musical in my opinion (and I LOVE the musical, don't get me wrong) just go for it, skim through it, decide, I really think you will enjoy it :)
I want to read it, my friends will think I'm weird for reading it, but I don't care. My friend says she's listened to her moms cd of this musical, and she's convinced it's opera and that it's weird. Next time I go to the library, I'm sure to check it out!!!!!
Great! Looking forward to seeing what you think! It's ok if your friends think its weird, they're missing out :p
My friend thinks it's weird that I listen to "opera" sometimes on the bus in the morning (Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night)...I almost bought the whole album on my iPod...haha. She saw the movie when she was like 5, and I told her that she didn't like it because she probably didn't understand what was going on...I think I would be able to read the book because I think I'm mature enough to understand the topic...I saw the musical and completely understood everything.
I'm Kitty-Lydia. The Phantom of the Opera was the first musical I saw and since then I've loved musicals. I've also read The Phantom of the Opera and Phantom many times :) I'm currently writing a novella inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, with Meg and Madame Giry as the main characters. I wanted to meet others who enjoyed The Phantom of the Opera as much as I do so 'hi' :D
Go comment on some other threads and maybe you'll "resurrect" one :) get other people interested in an old thread again
A lot of Goodread issues going on with people not getting emails/notifications. I wasn't and still dont get some but I always check into my groups just in case. And anytime you are welcome to start a thread as long as it has to do with POTO.
I was going to...but I don't know what to make it about because they pretty much have everything on here...

Hello all! I'm Bailey and only within the past year have I gained a growing interest in musicals. Though I was in band during high school, I never really watched any musicals. However, during college this year, I started to look more into the arts outside of band and dance. I have so far watched a couple different musicals on YouTube, including Phantom of The Opera. I've also seen the 2004 movie. But I haven't seen any musical live on stage. Hopefully, though, I'll be able to buy tickets for the showing of POTO when it comes to my state in October. I say 'hopefully' seeing as I'm the only one in my family who likes musicals. Anyway, I love the songs and story behind POTO. And one day, I plan on reading the actual book (add another to my never ending to-read list). I'm excited to join this group, hoping to learn a lot from all of you and have fun :)
Sorry Bailey, I usually get an email on all threads here but this one I didn't :( So welcome to the group! I have noticed you have been active in some threads and thanks for joining in:)
It's alright :) but yes I love to talk about and discuss Phantom of The Opera. With all the fandoms that I love really. Just POTO is one of my favorites.
My name is Lauren, and I'm a Phantaholic. Ok, that's pretty dorky, but nothing compared to what you're about to read:I originally fell in love with ALW's POTO when I was seventeen, and since then I've read the novel, and seen twelve film/stage/television adaptations. I haven't read Susan Kay's Phantom yet, but I'm really excited to!
Hello. My name is Carol. Not sure I haven't joined the group already. The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite. Have read the Gaston Leroux's original story many times, but truly enjoy ordering many of the variations as well. Hope to start reading them as soon as I finish the 2015 Challenge for Jane Austen's stories. There is not a room in my home that doesn't have Phantom stuff on the walls or horizontal surfaces. When my daughter, granddaughter, friend, and myself go to see the the New US Tour in March, it will be my 53 time seeing the stage production. Saw it late last year in Des Moines and it was fantastic.
Hello im Daisy! I absolutely LOVE Phantom of the Opera. I've seen the musical a thousand times already and seen the movies and Im currently reading the book by Gaston Leroux.
Hello,My name is Ashley.
I am new to goodreads.
I love phantom of the opera. My mom used to sing the songs all the time when I was younger, I pretended not to like it. At that time I really didn't know what opera was, and I thought it was just some boring opera singers that sang songs in really high voices. I am not even sure what I thought. Now I am hooked on it, and I love it. I have seen the movie, not the 1968 musical, unfortunately, but I have listened to the soundtrack, of the 1968. I am starting to read the book, but for these types of books I am the kind of person that has to have an audiobook to listen to.
I started to listen to one that was narrated Barrett Whitener. Except for me, he has to dry a voice and doesn't make the characters voices really any different. It all sounds kind of the same, and I am starting to get fidgety and bored.
Has anyone listened to the audiobook?
If so could someone give me a recommendation of a different narrator?

Hello, hello! I so happy to have found this Phantastc group on Goodreads. I have been obsessed with ALW music, before I could even speak English to understand what was going on. I watched "Phantom" when I was fourteen for the first time for my Drama Class. Now, my ultimate goal as an artist is to produce a classically animated feature film. Wouldn't that be great? It is the perfect medium to combine the thrilling horror and the lavish settings of the book with the beauty of the music. This past Intober I took the first step towards this dream by sketching some of the ideas and binding them into a book.I'm an award-winning artist, author, and a huge Phantom fan. I'm also crazy busy, but have enjoyed reading some of the discussions, so I decided to join the group. Feel free to message me if you have any questions answerable by my expertise.
