Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Chapter 6 - this is going to be dropped
Is anything happening in this book? I know it's supposed to be a life story and all, but even those have something happening in them. This book is about a shy loner that doesn't want to connect with people, because she likes her internet life better. So people need to drag her out of her shell. This could probably be an interesting story if it wasn't told from Cat's perspective and if it was not so slow paced. Cat is a boring character, the things she's doing are boring, this book is just boring.

Sorry guys, I can't go on with this book. Maybe if I'll have insomnia I'll read a chapter or 2, but so far, I've been sleeping just fine.

Marga (margaraawr) | 1550 comments @Tessa yes this is kind of slow. It's okay if you stop now if you don't like to continue anymore :)

Danna (dannasia) | 187 comments Just finished this. I liked some parts of it. And there's no denying the fact that it's slow-paced. I found myself skipping the parts w/ the Baz/Simon scenes. Haha! :D

Jamie Ekens (thebookkisser) | 500 comments @Danna - I don't like the Baz/Simon scenes too. But I still read them and I think Rainbow put them in cause the scenes are somehow connected to Cath's moods.

Marga (margaraawr) | 1550 comments @Jamie I think you're right about that one

Life is wasted on the living [Elena] | 33 comments I'm starting the book now, too.

Lola (lolsbukowski) How does everyone feel about how the twins' behavior might be related to their mother's abandonment. Though I still don't know the details of how that all went down.
I'm currently 11 chapters in.

message 128: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) Yup, just as I thought, page 143.

message 129: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily - Reads Must on page 64... trying to catch up! Her dad doesn't really put a fireman's pole in her room right? it kind of sounds like something my dad would do!!

message 130: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) What a cool dad.

message 131: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) Sorry guys, I'm halfway through. This book is hard to put down. I'm finding myself identifying loads with Cath, and her other half, Wren, at times. The battle between forfeiting the power to choose or embracing it.

message 132: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) 9/10 stars.
So much better than Eleanor and Park. I don't know which she wrote first, but if it was Eleanor and Park and then Fangirl, there's clearly been growth on Rowell's part.

message 133: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily - Reads Must are you on Wren or Cath's side with the whole 'mum' thing?

message 134: by Lola (last edited Apr 13, 2014 08:58AM) (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) On deciding to sustain whatever is left of a relationship between herself and Lauren? Or, their behavioral response to their mother's abandonment?

On the latter, I can empathize more with Cath, she seems to have kept some of her dignity at least. I also found her introversion and implosion more something I could personally identify with.

On remaining communicated with their mother, I can't blame Wren. She'd rather have something than nothing. Cath usually puts away anything too difficult to deal with, so she went and archived all possibilities of a relationship with her mother. Whatever floats their boat, I'm okay with. Although Lauren was antagonized quite a bit wasn't she. I don't have enough information to make out what I think of her. I usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

How about you?

message 135: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily - Reads Must I agree! I think Wren dealt with it all wrong but I don't blame her for wanting to know her mum.

Although saying that, I developed a soft spot for Art, which made what Lauren did even more awful. I can't understand how she would just leave... and the way they're life changed afterwards? I can't really blame Cath for not wanting to get hurt again either.

I think it was an interesting take one it because you ended up siding with both characters. That maybe there wasn't a right decision in this scenario.

message 136: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) I didn't have a father figure growing up.
Men leaving their children is a lot more common, and dare I say, more socially acceptable. So when I see a father, let alone a single father trying his hardest at raising children it warms my heart. I definitely developed a soft spot for Art as well.

She didn't want children, but she should have stepped up. And this is coming from someone whose adamant about not ever having children, seriously I'd probably suffer of postpartum depression if I ever did accidentally have one.

Here's a question, would a book from Wren's perspective be something you'd like to read?

message 137: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily - Reads Must I don't know. I think a lot of the character's in Wren's life would annoy me. And I didn't finish the book think I needed to know more about her. If anything I wanted to know how second year went with Cath.

How about you?

message 138: by Lola (new)

Lola (lolsbukowski) I have to agree.
Wren herself isn't likable.
Even after being hospitalized for alcohol poisoning she had to be arm twisted into agreeing to her father's terms, she was unapologetic and slightly pretentious. And before that she's described as someone who likes to go through people, specifically boys, for reassurance.

message 139: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily - Reads Must Yes I found it really frustrating how Wren couldn't see she'd done anything wrong! Or understand why Cath didn't want to see their mother.
