(view spoiler)[Yeah, there's definitely a middle ground between cutting off all parts of your "old life" including your twin sister and continuing as you were, and Wren seems to be struggling to find it. And I absolutely agree that forgiveness is so important, because the person most hurt by the grudge she's holding seems to be Cath! Even if she doesn't forgive her mom entirely, learning to let some of it go would be a huge step for her.

Just to clarify - you want her to say goodbye to writing fanfiction, or using it as an escape? Because being in the fandom is a big part of who she is, not just a coping mechanism, and there's nothing inherently wrong with it 😊 (hide spoiler)]

And her dad getting hospitalized is a big sign. Her mom's departure really ruined this family sadly. It looks like they all have mental health issues. I don't think it's fair for Wren to say they are letting the mom destroy them and to just snap out of it. They definitely need/needed professional help and haven't gotten any.

It seems that Cath's identity is on the line. She was safe when she had her sister and writing as a crutch. Now she's totally on her own socially, her professor is calling her writing plagiarism, and her mom is wanting to make an appearance again. And her dad isn't doing well. And things with Levi went south. I hope she sorts herself out and gets better.

(view spoiler)[Cath's anxiety is getting the best of her, but her dad is able to push her out of it. I'm really glad she didn't quit school and confronted her professor, even though she didn't really want to. And I'm glad her and Levi ironed things out. They are really good together.

There were a few chapters that showed how deep Cath's anxiety ran. She would've rather run from her problems than face them. The only reason she did face them was because she didn't want to let her dad down. I really felt for her when she just wanted to give up and get a D in the writing class. I've totally felt like that in school before. I think her professor pushing Cath to write her own story will help her though.

Also, did Nick fall to the wayside? I thought that would be a good friendship.

And she's falling more and more out of touch with Wren, which is sad and such a shame. I don't know why there's such hurt feelings there. I know Cath feels betrayed about the mom thing, but thats still your twin sister.. (hide spoiler)]

To be honest I thought I'd hate this book because I'm in tons of fandoms but tend to hate books about them since I feel like the people who write about fandom/fanfic "in the real world" tend to stereotype everything.

I was pleasantly surprise about this one tho. I don't love Cath or anything but I'm feeling the story. I like the way the author writes and I'm intrigued by the other characters. In my copy there's a intro where the author explains that she wrote this when she didn't have any hope it was going to get published at all, so basically she wrote it to herself and I love that! There's no feeling while I read that the author is trying to seduce me into liking the story, it just is the way it is.

I'm also a huge fan of Carry On haha - I read it before this one and now I get the feeling I'll be re-reading it afterwards (btw a sequel is gonna be published possibly this year <3). I love all the snippets of Carry On (despite it not being the same as the actual book) and the "original" Simon novel. But maybe that's just my own fangirl side talking haha

Anyways, sorry for the rant. Now for spoiler-y things under the cut

I like that we don't know who she's gonna end up with from the beginning, because while this obviously have some kind of romantic plot, the author introduced too many characters for us to be sure. I have the feeling she's gonna end up with Levi tho (or maybe I just like him better haha
I have to say that Cath is a believable character, but I'm not too into her, despite the fact that I can easily identify myself with her anxiety and social awkwardness.
I like Nick but I feel like he's gonna show some sort of asshole-y behavior at some point.. I just don't trust him for some reason haha

She's clearly going through some emotional turmoil with her sister and mom, and is channeling it in all the wrong ways. Now that she got hospitalized, her and Cath are talking again and will hopefully finally make amends. Their whole fight was just ridiculous.

I kind of hate the mom lol I don't have any respect for her from the beginning because she walked out on her family. And the whole interaction at the hospital with Cath was so "ew." Obviously Cath is going to be mad at her for everything that happened. Especially since she blames her mom for her anxiety. The mom was giving too much push back instead of being more understanding. Ugh.

I totally love Levi. He's really good to Cath and is so patient with her. And he's so cute and thoughtful. (hide spoiler)]

Sooooo, I was so happy about Levi haha I really enjoy him as a character and I think Cath really need someone easygoing to balance all her anxiety. He's not perfect of course but that makes him more real. I don't think he did anything wrong regarding the kiss, it was just very bad timing... It's not like they were together and to be honest, people have different feelings about kissing/hooking up. I definitely feel for Cath (I'm more like her, personally), but she really needs to work on her trusting issues (which apparently she is? yey!). And the fact is that people fuck up sometimes. Anyway, I love their dynamic and this book is giving me happy feelings atm :)

I'm still enjoying the snippets of fanfic/simon snow, but I have to say it's probably due to the fact that I've read Carry On.

I'm conflicted about Wren. She's being really insensitive about the whole mom situation. I agree that Cath needs to confront this if only to get some closure, but I don't think she has to come out of this on good terms with her mom. I don't like the idea of feeling obligated to like people just because you're related by blood, especially in this case where she's abandoned them.

This might be my inner-Cath taking but I don't think fanfic is a bad thing in her life. It's definitely a coping mechanism, but don't we all have them? It's not necessary unhealthy and I feel like it's part of who she is. Which is not to say that she doesn't have issues that should be dealt with and that fanfic is the answer to everything. I just don't want this to be one of those "in the end she got over fanfic and now has a real life and real friends like a normal person".

I've always loved that we get snippets from so many different fics! having been a pretty active part of the fanfiction community myself, I've noticed how even the same author can write completely differently from fic to fic, and I love seeing that variety (especially compared with the GTL canon excerpts). and I absolutely agree, fic is such a positive thing in Cath's life; although she does use it as escapism ("to disappear," as she says in the beginning) it's not harming anyone including herself - and there are absolutely worse ways to cope.

I also agree with you re: Wren and their mom. the first time I read this book I was in middle or high school, and I wanted the happy-ever-after nuclear family, but now I know people with toxic family members and I absolutely support cutting them off for your own mental health. Cath is definitely avoiding the issue at this point, but there are so many ways their relationship could play out and all of them are valid. (hide spoiler)]

omg yes, I don't know if they're underrated but they're so cute. Levi specially is giving me LIFE! he's just so sweet while still having all these weird things that make me roll my eyes (like the "I Can't let 'my girl' carry the laundry") that makes him not-perfect.

I'm ok with Wren&Cath making amends and I love their dad, he's trying his best. I'm just really disappointed with the mom. I didn't expect much from her, but I thought she was suppose to be trying?? jeez. I'm gonna get really mad if in the end they're all "well, she's my mom after all, let's forget the fact that we haven't seen her since we were 8 and that she left us in the hospital as soon as she could".
One thing I should be addressed here (and probably the only point I agree with Wren about) is the fact that Cath needs to get over her mom. By which I mean stoping blaming her anxiety on other people. I feel like acknowledging that she has this issue and recognizing where it comes from is healthy, but just justifying it it's pointless if she wants to get better. I mean, obviously she shouldn't be drinking herself to oblivion but she should be thinking more like Wren In that way.

I have to say tho as a Carry On fan I wish that all the snippets were from just the original story and Carry on. I get confused easily and despite knowing that the common point of all the fanfics is the simon/baz, I wish it was a linear story parallel to the main story so we could have two stories in a book :)

I guess what I mean is that I wish relationships in real life would work out like that also lol

Honestly the whole mom situation pissed me off and I'm happy there was no "happy ending". The story felt a bit rushed towards the end, but I'm glad the author chose not to write 300 more pages of family drama.

This was a nice read and now I can't wait for Wayward Son (BR anyone??).

(view spoiler)[I think I hadn't wanted to think about the extrovert/introvert thing because I wanted to just enjoy how cute they are together, but you're absolutely right - beyond that one conversation it doesn't really come up again. and my ex considered himself an introvert but was much more socially outgoing than I was, and that definitely led to some conflict.

honestly I've never been sure whether my dissatisfaction with the ending was because I just wanted more or if I felt like it wasn't thoroughly wrapped up, but it does seem to fall a little flat compared to the rest of the book. (hide spoiler)]

Just started today!! I'm so excited. I've read less than a 100 pages and I already love it more than Carry On. I wished I had read this one first, I think it would have made Carry On make a lot more sense with all the backstory.

Okay. Some br decide pages, or chapters to read daily others don't. I ended up reading almost all of it.
Interesting experience, I loved it when I first read it, but don't think I ever reread it. Rereading it now, I cant say I love it. Dont hate it, just feel indifferent to it.

Hmm I got bored but not in the first chapter. Don't force yourself to read it, that is a sure way to go into a slump.
