I thought it was a fun read, a little on the slow side but worth it. I like those coming of age books a lot, though. Put me in mind of The Body, It and Boy's Life. I have noticed Simmons goes a little description happy at times, but I can live with that.

It seems like every horror author tries his hand at writing a coming of age tale at some point.

Angie | 65 comments That's how I felt, I've got Boys Life waiting to be read, it sounds a bit like this. I've read the sequel to this, and it ok. Not like this though.

I haven't seen any female horror writers try their hand at it though, not that I can recall anyway

message 55: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yes, I was thinking the same thing Evans. I was also wondering why there isn't a horror novel about a bunch of young girls finding mischief and trouble...has anyone ever heard of one?

The movie Ginger Snaps comes to mind, bit not quite the same thing.

Angie | 65 comments There is none that I can think of, boys have got It, Boys Life , Stand by Me, There's even Lost boys and The Goonies

And all girls got was Ginger Snaps.....
Maybe it's because girls back then stayed in to learn house stuff for later in life. Crazy, but probably true.

message 58: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Is Ginger Snaps a book? The movie was pretty awesome, but you're right Angie, girls weren't really allowed to gallivant back un the day like boys were.

Actually, I was mistaken. I'm on chapter 16.

I don't think Ginger Snaps was a book.

Ginger Snaps is a movie series. I heard ot is good. Never saw it.

message 61: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments You're only one chapter ahead of me:)

Angie | 65 comments Ginger snaps is a film, and its got a sequel but I can't remember the name of it.

message 63: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Didn't make it to 19. I like this book, but I really have to concentrate on this one. I didn't finish The Terror, much to my dismay and its not for lack of liking it, it was just sooo long.

message 64: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments I think it's the descriptions. I think Stephen king does the same thing and sometimes it loses me.

Angie | 65 comments I got the Terror as one of my Christmas books last year and I started reading it twice , read the first couple of pages then put it down. So I can get that way as well Addy. I loved this one though, and I read it quite fast then went through the sequel as well. I didn't see the need for it really, the book ended well I thought.

Yep, same issue for me. A lot of superfluous details and sidebar events would be fine if it was the only book I wanted to read this year, but there are a lot of other books glaring jealously at me from the shelf. I'm skimming now to get on to the heart of the story.

Angie | 65 comments After c.19 when the whole thing with Duane not much happens for ages. The book really slows down until what happens to the priest, I think that's where the boys start their planning again. I've borrowed(except I bet I never get it back!!) So I can't give you the chapter. Sorry

message 68: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments That's ok. I like it enough to finish because I'm dying to know what all these mysteries mean.

Thanks Angie. Just going to read faster. I tend to linger and mosey whilst reading.

message 70: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments I didn't know where else to write this but I heard about your accident Adam and I hope you are in good spirits and doing better:) Miss you, of course, and will be praying for yah! Hang in there buddy!

I think I'm going to fold on this one for now. It is failing to entertain me or hold my interest. Maybe will try again some day, but for now too many other promising books beckon from the shelves.

Angie | 65 comments I've done the same on a couple of books, best wishes to you and your family. And to Adam, I hope you're going to be feeling more like yourself soon, and best wishes to your family as well. I'll be thinking of you guys and praying for a speedy recovery:)

Thanks Angie! I think I'm going to take a quick detour from horror and read David Morrell 's Creepers next.

Addy | 46 comments I'm a little confused about the Ashley Mansion. Has it burned down? Does anyone remember why?

message 75: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Wow, stuff is definitely happening. Seems like there is a big cover up about this bell.

Angie | 65 comments Definitely no one likes to talk about it! And Ashley Mansion, do you remember the start were the boys do the bike patrol thing? They do a circuit town and go down a rutted road. They touch what left of the foundation of the burnt down house. The Ashley senior went crazy and burnt the place down.

Where are you up to?

message 77: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Thanks Angie! I can't believe I'm already forgetting details. I'm at ch15 currently. Right now its seems to be some kind of conspiracy going on! I love conspiracies:)

Angie | 65 comments I had to flick backwards to find out about who Ashley was, where the bell was first mentioned and a couple of other things so it ended up sticking. I liked the book, and it did scare me, but I might just be a wuss, lol

This book really paid off in spades if you can make it past the halfway point, I feel. The suspense is very slow to build, but it is there. You just have to slog through the sleuthing and messing around that the boys go through. Then there is the issue of all the different perspectives. Those begin to narrow pretty significantly as you get farther in.

I am sad that Evans dropped out, but I think Simmons is not his cup of tea. We all like fast moving exciting stories, but I think Simmons caters to the ones among us that dig an occasional slow burn or pot boiler. Just my thought. I have read Carrion Comfort and this one and both were very involved reads, nothing light and breezy at all about them.

Angie | 65 comments I loved this one, so much that I bought and read A Winter haunting straight after. That just didn't have the same impact. It worked out well in the end, though.

message 82: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yeah. If I can crawl my way through this one I might consider the sequel. I find Simmons to be alot like Straub. I'm still mad at myself for not finishing Shadowland. Its just very involved.

Angie | 65 comments If you get through the first half of this book, get to c.19, and then just a bit after that when the boys get their brave heads back on. Then this book goes fast, I thought so anyway. So much happens. All that DS has been building up slowly gets a resolution. The rendering truck, the bell, all the freaky eel things. You just have to get to c.19

Angie | 65 comments Adam that's the words, it's a pot boiler!! I was trying to describe it:)

message 85: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yes! I'm trying desperately to reach it!

Angie | 65 comments Good luck with it Addy:-)

I am now reading Dead Sea, yet another long endlessly descriptive novel. This one is more in the vein of Lovecraft than Straub, though. Tim Curran is a crafty writer.

message 88: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yes that's a good comparison. I love Tim Curran's style.

message 89: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yeah! That's what I'm talking about! The end of ch18 just made this book worth it. I think its finally getting somewhere. Ch19 here I come!

message 90: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Not Duane! He was a good kid:(

message 91: by Adam (new) - added it

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 266 comments Mod
He shouldn't've been snooping around!

Angie | 65 comments Poor Duane, such a bad end! Those eel things are awful, but the rendering truck is bad as well. Duane knew he was going to die though, when his uncle died.

message 93: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Wow. I'm still kinda sad about Duane. His father will surely drink now.

message 94: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Hopefully his buddies will avenge him.

Angie | 65 comments The others are so freaked now, understandably so. And yes its really bad for his dad, no one believes him when he says both Duane and his uncle were murdered. This town covers up a lot of crap.

I hope you had a good Christmas Addy, I had a good one lots of new stuff to read:)

message 96: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Yes it does. A very corrupt town with many a gruesome secret! Love it!

I had a great Christmas! Book shopping as we speak. Found some Mccammon novels. Yay! Hope yours was awesome Angie:)

Angie | 65 comments It was, I got a nexus so Jayne got my kindle with all my freaky books! Good luck with the book shopping!!

This book is worth sticking with, its just slow:)

message 98: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Has anyone read Children of Night? In the blurb it talks about Father O'Rourke. Michael, in fact. That's gotta be the O'Rourke boy right? He's so into church and mass it wouldn't surprise me if he became a Father. Pretty cool huh?

Angie | 65 comments I'll say because bit said in A winter haunting, yes mike does eventually become a priest. I've just but the book you mentioned on my list, I can get it delivered for only £2.60. And its cool because it'll be in paper!

message 100: by Addy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Addy | 46 comments Not bad. I'm thinking about buying it myself:)
