Okay nobody throw anything at me. I did not care for Pretty Woman. I thought was a horrible message. I remember being the only girl in my class in high school who didn't want to be Julia Roberts in that movie. Why would you want to be a prostitute who's selling her body on the streets? She didn't even have a good reason to be a prostitute. She just got tired of her town and wanted to go to the big city. Please!! I can't watch the movie without sneering.

Justine, I agree with you on the Oscar-nominated movies. I like very few of those. Ghost scared the crap out of me with the dark things coming to get the souls of bad people. I was afraid I was going to go to hell around the time that movie came out.

I really liked Titanic.

My Best Friend's Wedding. I thought Julia Roberts was evil incarnate in that movie. She was so manipulative and underhanded.

I'm sorry but I thought Meet the Browns was pretty bad. Sorry to any Tyler Perry fans. I felt bad that poor Angela Bassett was so horribly miscast in that movie.

See that was my problem with it. It was a Disney version of prostitution, and that's just inappropriate. Young girls are impressionable enough to fall for the Prince Saving the Girl from the Streets. Prostitutes have a pretty awful life. She wasn't a call girl, who are like the elite of the prostitution world, and actually do pretty well. She was a street walker. If you want to see real life, watch the documentary, Hookers on the Point. It was very depressing.
As for not liking Julia Roberts, I don't dislike her. I don't like most of the movies she's made though. I have nothing against Julia Roberts. I promise.

I'm not saying every movie has to be responsible in its message, I'm just saying why I didn't like the movie. For me, it was ridiculous. I didn't think it was a fairy tale like they were going for. I thought it was stupid. However, seeing the aftermath of that terrible message did hit home with me because of the audience that it targeted, young girls who idealized Julia Roberts' character.

message 5: by Yolonda (new)

Yolonda | 406 comments I liked The Titanic, but I will never sit through that movie again. American Gangster was just okay for me. Meet the Browns was not funny to me at all.

As the movie review duo on In Living Color would say.."Hated It!".

And for some reason I'm not much for romantic tearjerker movies despite my love for romance books. I'm just weird like that. Give me action & suspense movies anytime.

Same here, Loni. I like action and sci-fi/fantasy movies the best. I do confess that romantic historical period movies with happy endings are my guilty girly pleasure. :)

message 7: by new_user (new)

new_user I thought Pretty Woman was ridiculous too. I did like Crash. It may not have explored race relations that deeply -it was only meant to be a brief window into four stories, after all- but it was a good beginning. Most Hollywood films have not explored even that deeply.

I didn't like No Country for Old Men. Nothing new for me.

I didn't like Love and Basketball. I didn't get why she was mooning over that loser for so long. Blech! Love Jones was okay. Good soundtrack. I don't care for Larenz Tate as a romantic lead, so maybe that's my problem. My sister loves Set It Off. I freaking hate that movie. What a waste of those girls' lives. I thought the screen play was lousy. The writer basically made them rats in a dead end maze.

I thought Crouching Tiger was really dry. I adore Ang Lee, although I haven't watched Brokeback. He has a really great movie he did back in China. It's called The Wedding Date. It was so good. I also love Eat Drink Man Woman.

OMG, my "I Hate It" movie is Pretty Woman.
I think I really hated it because it was the first movie where everyone kept telling me how wonderful it was. I saved up my allowance for weeks to buy the VHS, sight unseen. And when I saw it, I was like "WTF. The heroine is a prostitute. Who makes the heroine a prostitute? With a heart of gold, my @$$. This sucked on toast."

I am perfectly willing to turn in my black card for admitting that I thought "Roots" was long and boring.

Wow. How come we are just now meeting, Shunda? I needed someone like you to protect me from all the Pretty Woman fans growing up. LOL.

Another movie that I never loved like everyone else is Dirty Dancing. It was okay, but not great. I hated the storyline and it was uber-cheesy to me. The only good parts were some of the songs and the dancing. I remember it came on everyday, several times a day one summer and I was so sick of that movie.

I don't care for Tyler Perry's movies and I don't watch his sitcoms.

I didn't like Love and Basketball. I can't stand when a woman is weak behind a man, especially one that treats her like dirt and doesn't want her.

I liked Pretty Woman. Two words. Richard Gere.

I don't care for alot of black movies, because a huge percentage of them sterotype black people. Not all black men are in the gang or in jail. Not all black women likes to fight, strippers or even single mothers.

I agree with you about too many Black movies. My sister tries to support most of them, but I only watch the ones that interest me. There are a lot of stories of Black Americans that have yet to be told in the movies or books for that matter. Why keep telling the same story over and over again.

Tyler Perry is hit or miss for me. There are some good things about his movies, but I think he's way too preachy.

message 14: by new_user (new)

new_user I like his movies because the dialogue tends to be more natural -when it's not dramatic- and the films are insightful and funny. They are preachy, but compared to some romcoms... I really can't relate to the squealing female. So I really hate some of the characters in those movies. Perry's films are a nice break.

I don't like most romantic comedies, so I do agree with you on that. I just feel that Tyler Perry's moral/social agenda is too thinly veiled in his movies. I like a message but in a very creative way that makes you think until you peel back the layers to get to the message.

My sister is a pretty big Tyler Perry fan. Poor her. She has to hear me go on about him. I did buy Why Did I Get Married because she raved about it, and I like the cast. I'm glad that he's able to get his voice out there and reach the neglected audience.

I love dancing movies, but Dirty Dancing was way too sappy and cliched storyline for me.

I love The Best Man. That is like a cult classic in my family.

message 17: by new_user (new)

new_user Did you see Why Did I Get Married, Danielle? I think that was probably his best one. It's much better than The Family that Preys, imo, more uplifting, smart and relevant. The couples' struggles are pretty interesting.

new_user Well, a lot of these are pretty famous. Just a few obscure ones. I do watch a lot of movies though, much more than I watch TV-- not hard to do since I don't really watch TV, LOL.

Danielle, I really liked Daddy's Little Girls too. That guy was so sweet. I just watched Madea Goes to Jail today. Not bad. Could have used more editing and Rudy so cannot play inner city. She still sounds like a kid.

Davina D. | 796 comments Of Tyler Perry films, I've enjoyed Why Did I Get Married? the best. It was a well-made film with overall good performances and good story. It lacked a certain amateurish quality many of Perry's other films have.

Giselle Simone (papercuts) | 28 comments I liked Why Did I Get Married? too. I thought it was one of his better movies, and I was actually impressed with The Family That Preys. I liked that it wasn't a HEA for Sanaai's character.

But I will be going to see his new movie with Taraji P. Henson & Adam Rodriguez (solely for him, I assure you. =])

message 41: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir | 1456 comments Ok, I just saw Why Did I Get Married and thought that Tasha Smith (she played Angela) cold stole the movie from every other person there. Jill Scott came in a close second. Normally I can't take Tyler Perry anything, because I think he brushes in strokes that are much too broad. Subtlety and nuance are on permanent vacation in his movies. And WDIGM, was vinctage TP, but Tasha Smith and Jill Scott made it sparkle.

Movies I hated that others love:
Brokeback Mountain - boring.
Raging Bull - I Love me some Robert De Niro. I can watch Godfather II on endless loop and bask in his masculine loveliness. But Raging Bull was not my cup of tea.

I finally sat down and saw Bram Stoker's Dracula. I never had a chance to see it until recently and I noticed it's been highly lauded since it was made but I didn't like it. I guess I'm more of a history buff because I didn't like that they meshed the real history of Vlad Tepes III with Mina Parker being his reincarnated wife and they tried to make Dracula a love story where he was this misunderstood count. Ugh! If you're going to call it Bram Stoker's Dracula, it should be Bram Stoker's story.

I heard Coppola, the screenwriter and other folks had their hand in the pie and when that happens the story and characters get muddled. That's exactly what happened here. They were trying to make too many stories and show too many POV so there was really no focus. Gorgeous looking scenery, costume and sets, but I have to go with Ebert on this one but so empty otherwise.

I didn't care for the love story. I liked the visuals and the sets. And the scary parts. I don't know why, but I really enjoy the movie. But I agree that they took some serious liberties with the source material. Dracula was a creep in the book.
