Chris Bumpas I am about to start A Dance with Dragons and it has been a while since I read #4 and I am out of town and don't have the book with me to review real quick. Can someone give me a run down of the events towards the end of the book please? I remember something happening at the end to Cersei...fill me in so I can start this book up to speed.

(Yes, I know the events of this book are parallel to the last but still...)

Thanks!

Kyla Squires Hi there,

There is a detailed plot summery at the link below, or you can go to the Feast wikipedia page for a breif plot summery.

If you haven't read that yet, I can give you an executive summary that covers the main bullets points:

* In Dorne, Prince Oberyn's daughters (who died killing Gregore Clegane) are plotting to get their revenge against the Lannisters for their involvement in the murder of Elia Martell and her children during Robert's Rebellion. Their plot is defeated by their uncle, Prince Doran Martell, who has them and his daughter Arianne, jailed. But he then explains to her what his own plot is. He is planning on bringing Daenerys back from the East and to marry her to Quentyn Martell, so they can rise up and take the realm from the Lannisters at last.

* Brienne continues to search the land for Sansa, but is taken prisoner by the Brotherhood Without Banners. She learns that they are being led by Catelyn Stark, who was brought back to life by Thoros' magic. She sentences Brienne to hang after she refuses to kill Jaime Lannister, but stops at the last minute when Brienne says the word "sword".

* On the Iron Islands, a kingsmoot is held after Balon Greyjoy dies. His eldest brother Euron "Crows Eye" is declared king, and he sends his brother Victarion to the east to find Danerys, as he hopes to conquer the realm using her and her dragons.

* In the Eyrie, Littlefinger continues to plot to become Lord and tells Sansa that his long-term plot is to get rid of little Robert so she can inherit it all and restore the name of Stark. Its also clear that he also hopes to become her lover in the process.

* At the Wall, Sam is given a new mission by John Snow. He is sent to the Citadel of Oldtown by way of Braavos with Maester Aemon and Gilly to research the Others. Aemon dies in Braavos, but not before revealing to Sam that he thinks Danaerys is the one foretold in the ancient prophecies to defeat the Others with her dragons.

* Arya Stark continues to learn the ways of the Faceless Men and runs into some of the Black Brothers who are on their way to Oldtown. She recognizes Sam, and kills Brother Dareon when he abandons Sam, Gilly and Aemon.

* In King's Landing, Cersei continues in her grab for power. She appoints only her cronies to the Council, and learns from Grand Maester Pycelle that Margaery Tyrell has been taking lovers. She decides to set her up and has a knight she's been sleeping with testify that Margaery is not a virgin. She is taken prisoner by the Septons, but the plan backfires when they detain the knight and torture him to confess his own sins. He confesses that he's slept with Cersei, that she plotted to murder Robert, that she has taken many lovers since Robert's death (including her cousin) and that her children are the result of incest. Cersei is arrested and held prisoner in the Grand Sept.

That's about it, I think. The main thing is that now, all roads seem to be converging on the East. The Ironborn, the Black Brotherhood, and the Martells are all seeking Danaerys' allegiance. Most are doing this for their own selfish ends, but it's clear that she is the one who is likely to defeat the Others with her dragons.

Chris Bumpas Someone help me straighten this out please. Sam is supposed to be in Oldtown, but in Dance with Dragons, on Jon's first chapter, he talks to Sam on his way to see Stannis. Is this supposed to be before he sent them away?

Yes. The author states that this book overlaps chronologically with vol IV.

Chris Bumpas I knew that but for some reason I was thinking he sent him at the end of volume 3 and he was there in 4. So it threw me off.
