Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments I'm looking for the title of book I read around 2002/2003. I was in fifth grade at the time. It was about a girl who had to miss prom or some kind of year-end dance thing at school because her father wasn't well (he either recently had a heart attack or was at high risk for one) and so her family had to leave early to go stay at some kind of resort hotel so he would have time away from the stress of daily life. She's really angry and upset with her dad for making her miss the dance.

At the hotel, she befriends a boy who she either dates or is portrayed as a possible romantic interest. He seems to empathize with her about her dad, but his behaviour in regards to her father keeps getting more and more disturbing/violent. At one point she and him are on some kind of ledge around the golf course where her dad is golfing and the boy raises a gun and pretends to shoot at her dad. I can't remember any of the other things he did, but I think there were a few suspicious situations where her dad could've gotten hurt or what happened could've triggered a heart attack.

In the end (view spoiler)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Kate would you say this book was more of a horror, suspense, mystery or something else?

Do you remember anything about the cover?

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments Sorry, I didn't realize someone posted here!

I don't remember the cover, but I felt it was more suspense than horror, wondering what the boy might do next.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments Bump. I've spent some time looking through the Fear Street series and related books just in case (we had a lot of those books in the class library) but none of them sounded like it or looked familiar.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments A few more questions that may help.

Could anyone else besides the girl see the boy?
Did she have any siblings/friends/sidekicks?

Did the story lead up to the family going to the resort? Or, did going to the resort happen at the beginning?

Location of the hotel/resort?
Were there other people at the resort; did they play a big role in the story?

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments I can't remember, honestly. The time she spent with the boy and the time she spent with her family rarely overlapped.

I THINK she had a younger sibling of some sort. She might've mentioned a few friends, but they weren't with her at the resort.

Going to the resort happened very close to the beginning. I believe the very first chapter was the main character either learning they had to leave or having already learned it and complaining about it. They arrived there within the first three chapters, I believe.

I have no idea where the hotel/resort was. My best guess is just "America."

There were other people like some guys her father golfed with, but I don't remember any of them being particiularly important to the story.

The first review on Goodreads mentions the father having a heart condition.

And, on Google Books, at the bottom are some of the common words/phrases used in the book.
"Golf" and "Shotgun" is mentioned

And, a lengthy snarky recap here
http://pointhorror.inthemoonlight.net...

The beginning of the above recap mentions the girl trying on a dress for a Last Dance.

By the way, you gave a really good description.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments oh my god, that's it. Thank you! (And that last link is hilarious.)
