SOLVED. Fantasy: Sorceress of Nature vs. Sorcerer of Metal... [s]

I read this about 20 years ago about sorcerers who are loners because they mistrust each other. I think a sorceress of nature(plants/animals)sends a message with an apprentice to a sorcerer of metal(bronze I remember) that she likes him but since sorcerer's are a proud people, the message became misunderstood and an insult was sent back thus starting a war between the two. There was a huge bird made of bronze from him and she liked to use vines to break open his dome made of bronze. I think they both died at the end. Not sure f it was a short story that stands alone or part of an epic.
