This is the thread for the December 2013 Classics Read, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

No spoilers on this thread please.

Holly (hollycoulson) I'm looking forward to reading this, even though I am slightly weary. The only experience I've had with Fitzgerald is The Great Gatsby, which I severely disliked...

I can remember watching an adaptation on TV of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button though, and I really enjoyed.

I'll definitely be joining in!

And Holly, remember, it is nice and short so even if you don't especially enjoy it, at least you won't have spent hours finding it out.

See you on the thread in December!

Charlotte (charley_100) | 322 comments Happy that my suggestion got voted :) I loved the film and was intrigued to read the book...such a short story with such a rich idea. Looking forward to it

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Is everyone just reading that short story? I found a collection of FSF's short stories, of which this is only one.

As it's quite short, I might take some time to explore others he's written too.

Charlotte (charley_100) | 322 comments I think the book in my library has two other short stories in it...theres seems to be a number of editions with varying stories, I think!

Mine is on my Kindle and is part of FSF's complete works so I will need to examine closer to see if it attaches to any other shorts in particular.

Holly (hollycoulson) I've just realised I don't actually have access to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button... I'm hoping my school library has it...

message 9: by Pink (new)

Pink I too loved the film and really love the book.....though found them very different. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks of it.

Holly (hollycoulson) I saw the 2008 version with Brad Pitt. It was surprisingly moving, although it will be interesting to see Fitzgerald's writing style in something that isn't Gatsby.

I've luckily found a PDF file that is now happily sitting on my kindle waiting patiently in my 'readalongs' section!

Charlotte (charley_100) | 322 comments Here is the version I have picked up from the library: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button And Two Other Stories.

The cover is beautiful. Starting it tonight as I go away at the start of December and will have to leave it back!

Thanks, Jen - downloaded.

I've borrowed an audio version from the library, which is 3hrs 45 mins long, so will be listening to all of them.

I read this last week as I forgot it was December's book. I really enjoyed it, I wasn't expecting to as someone said on the other thread I think that the movie isn't very good? I haven't seen the movie but I've heard others say the movie is poor so I was expecting the book to be poor too.

message 16: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (charley_100) | 322 comments The movie is wonderful, a rich, emotional film. The book is very different. The bare bones are the same but his life follows quite a different path, so I don't think it could ruin the book to watch the film, or vice versa.
