Looks interesting but it doesn't sound like what I'm looking for. I'm sure it was young adult fiction and it was more likely a late 90s to present publication date.

I cannot be sure it was a YA book, because what I can remember of it, it was very violent. The scene that has stayed with me for all these years was:
There was boy[teen?] (main character) and his dog. They came home or something, rounded the side of the house, and were confronted by bullys?Criminals?Baddies? (can't remember the specifics) the boy was held back and the dog was gasolined and set on fire. I'm sure duct tape was involved somehow to, on the dog or the boy I don't remember. I just remember the horror of the boy once the "baddies" ran away, him kneeling before his pet and thinking "poor little guy" "I love you" something along those lines.
I'd really like to put a book to this horrific scene that has haunted me all this time. If anyone knows please tell me.
