No Heather, it isn't The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was a short story. Sigh, really wish it would be found.
I just had one of mine from 2011 found, so I've decided to take that as a good omen Just and that this will be found so that we can get it read again.
Sigh, I just keep hoping and hoping Just. Some day this book will be ID'ed and we'll have to have a party to celebrate.

It's not a recommendation (some interesting ideas but hastily/poorly written) and not the one you're after ( I don't recall the other details you've described).
The author was very prolific and used many pseudonyms to churn out pulp fiction, so perhaps he wrote the story you remember.

No. I don't even see any congruence between my description, and the description of the short story (which appears to differ with the part plugged into the novel).
Care to point out what I'm missing?
Sorry I missed responding to that last time around.
I also have not closely examined all of A. J. Merak (Pseudonymn), John Glasby's oeuvre.
Sigh, I really do wish someone would tell us what this story is and where there is a book with it in it. (pouting) I do so love my "earth is being destroyed, here come the aliens to save (x amount) of humans. . . . .
And speaking of aliens coming to save x number of humans from a dieing earth...I found a new one Justanotherbiblophile. It's classified as PNR and is somewhat warm (not totally hot, but more than mild) It's the first of 2 so far. Shattered Stars is the first one, and the second one is Lethal Impact. Basically the aliens that show up are more than a bit opportunistic. Their civilization wanders around, checking on emerging civilizations that have suddenly fallen silent to see if they can make a buck (or credit or latnim or whatever. . .) What happens afterwards, that's up to the h and the H.

Just so we're clear, this is called a 'paranormal romance'?!? *le sigh*
Great concept. I'm dreading the execution given what little you've laid out about it. Edit your comment, and tell us all the title, but don't link it, as it's not related to this query.

I thought it might be the book because it was (past tense) a short story (got added onto later, and made into a full book - thought maybe that was why you're having sm trouble finding it). But on rereading that is very different from your description. I'll keep looking for you, tho! Hope you find it, soon :)
These are 2 short stories/novellas. The author Viola Grace only does short stories. Most of the story is about what happens after the h gets accepted by the aliens. There is a bit about what has happened on the Earth (after a E.L.E. asteroid smashes into the planet.) But most of it is straight PNR. And yeah, I'm not totally sure how a story about aliens becomes PNR, but hey, I am not in the publishing OR marketing of books business.
I actually found the author because I was leafing through either Amazon or B&N and found a cover of one of her books that I loved, and decided that I wanted the book just for that art work. After that, I was hooked. She basically takes the artwork that she's given and the characters in the story revolve around the art. In one of her books, the artist put a squirrel in the painting--so she had to come up with a way to work an Earth squirrel into a story that takes place on an alien world. The stories are quick to read and are well written. Not all authors can do short stories, but I like the way that Ms. Grace handles her stories. (Plus, I like the fact that if I'm not feeling well I can pull up one of the 100+ stories of hers that I own and use it to pull my attention off the pain.) Hum, wonder if I can write my book addiction off on my taxes as "Pain Management"??

Within a couple of years of when I posted this question, at my kitchen table, US (not India). English language. However no idea of when it was published; probably no earlier than 1940.
I believe it was dead-tree, and not used-electron.
I read both anthologies and magazines, so no idea.

Just to be clear (if the title of this post isn't clear enough), this is almost certainly a story, I likely read it in a collection.
*bump*
