Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Hi:
Lethal Intent is being reissued by Kensington Books Dec 3rd with a new cover and 8,000 word update (or Epilogue). It's coming out in paperback and, for the first time, eBook. (Available now for pre-order at B&N, for example.)I can't find its new ISBN GR. (ISBN-13 978-0-7860-3414-7)
But more than that, I'm unsure how I should handle adding it to my page so it is clear it is the same book but with new content, etc. I don't want to simply replace the cover obviously given the new text (and in the eBook, new pictures.)
I've tried searching GR library chats & help but am a bit lost. Please could a librarian advise me? Thanks SO much. Best, Sue Russell

Z-squared | 8576 comments Looks like the paperback has already been added to GR and combined with the older versions:

You can make it (or the ebook edition, whichever) the default/primary edition. That would make it the first edition users see when searching by title, as well as the version appearing on your author page. I've seen other authors then place disclaimers at the top of the new edition announcing the inclusion of new material. Some even go one step further and place disclaimers on the old editions pointing out that another edition has more content. Here's an example:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

If you scroll to the bottom of the description, you'll see "This book has been previously published and has been revised from its original release." I'd probably go a step further and add something specific, like the addition of an 8,000-word epilogue. And I'd move that statement to the top of the description instead of the bottom. Also, that author isn't on GR, so no one has been able to set the new edition as the default one, but you get the idea.

Z-squared | 8576 comments Oh, and I added the kindle edition, since it wasn't there yet:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

If you give us the ISBNs for the B&N ebook edition, we can add a nook edition as well.

message 4: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8576 comments Arrrrrgh I forgot to include directions on how to set default edition:

1) Navigate to the book's page. Be sure you have selected the edition you wish to become the default (primary) edition.

2) Click "edit details" below the book's description.

3) On the right side of the page, click "Set this book as the primary edition for this work". It's about midway down the page.

Only Goodreads Authors can set the default edition at this time.

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Thank you so much! Am digesting all this. It's making sense (though I can't see the note on that other book saying "This book has previously been published, etc...") In any event, my goal will be to add notes worded as you suggest in the right spots. (Hopefully).

I didn't know B&N's eBook would have a different ISBN. Interesting. Here it is: ISBN-13: 9780786034413

Thanks for the default info. Looks straightforward (famous last words :) ) And thanks for ALL this helpful info. Appreciate it.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Barnes and Noble doesn't have a bnid on this book, just the same ebook isbn publisher uses with all booksellers. No nook edition, just an ebook Barnes and Noble sells for use on the nook.

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Ah, so you are saying that eBooks have their own ISBNs and they are different from the print book ISBN? (Did not know that till today. Then, it's my first eBook.) Thank you!

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments I guess I am more dense than I thought. While the Kindle edition link words and I see the new cover on THAT page, I don't see how to add that to my page. And I still don't see the new cover print edition when I search by title or ISBN.
While Z-Squared's advice makes sense (thanks!) for once I've got past this hurdle, I still am not seeing a way to upload the new print edition to my author page. (Maybe if I could find it in the system, all would be revealed.) I DO see beneath the existing cover on dashboard "add eBook" but don't want to do that until I've got the 2013 print book uploaded. I feel I'm missing something! Apologies and thanks.

Barnes and Noble, amazon, kobo and other booksellers may also have their own internal EAN numbers ( bnid, asin, kobo id, etc.) in addition to or instead of isbn numbers you personally purchase, obtain from bookseller, from publisher, etc.

The rules for isbn numbers and formats (hardcovers, paperback, ebook, etc.) come from the International ISBN agency (your country's isbn agency likely to either have easier to read FAQs or to just point you to the official ones at http://www.isbn.org/faqs_ebooks_isbns - http://www.isbn.org/sites/default/fil... and http://www.isbn-international.org/faqs )

A link I like that's accessible and free is at http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content... --
absolutely nothing official (I'm not even a librarian and link is in no way connected to any isbn agency but just the For Dummies line of books).

Eta: typos and link correction

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Ha ha! Perfect. I'm not being facetious. I have had a couple of those books come up in google results when researching and they can be helpful.

Z-squared | 8576 comments Sue, I'm not sure what you're seeing on your author dashboard, as that's not something librarians have access to. However, your paperback is most definitely on Goodreads. Searching by the ISBN immediately sends users to your book. Here is the link directly to its page:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It's combined with all the other editions of your book, of course. You don't need to add anything to your dashboard; the new kindle, paperback, and ebook (I just added that one) editions are all combined with the old ones. What you need to do is set which one of these many editions you'd like to be the primary. Follow the link I have here in this message, and then follow the instructions I pasted in message 4 above.

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Thank you Z-Squared. What I'm not seeing is how to get the book across from that page (per your link) to "my books" on my page. My page only has the old edition and cover. And I see no "add new edition." I filled out an "add new book" form but as you've predicted, it rejected saying "this book already exists." Bottom line, I see it at your link, I just can't for the life of me see a link or tool on "My Books" to let me get that info on my page. Thanks for your patience.

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments PS, and by "My Books", I mean "Sue Russell's Books" on my Profile page. Thx.

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments And - apologies -- another PS. I just created a blog on my author page (been watching the videos). But I couldn't upload the book cover there either - when I search Sue Russell or Lethal Intent in the window that pops up, I only see the old edition. Hmmmm....

On your page/dashboard, the thumbnail/edition you see is the default/primary edition, follow Z-squared directions to pick a new default/primary edition.*

On your blog post issue, when using "add book/ author" right under add button is "other editions" (or after clicking "add book/ author" search by the isbn wanted instead of title).

 Add other edition

Some parts of goodreads take a while for cache to catchup; so the newly set primary edition could take 10 minutes to 72 hours to show everywhere on goodreads. You may have done everything right and "add book/author" just slow to catch up.

*librarians cannot set the default for you. If author doesn't set, goodreads uses most rated edition. If you cannot set, you'll need to request staff to do for you by emailing to support@goodreads.com .

Sue Russell (suerussell) | 20 comments Thanks so much, D.A. Perhaps that is it, some kind of delay. So I will keep trying. Thanks for your help and the instructions above. Best, Sue
