hard cold bodies like marble are a no no for me::a real no no eek::all that blood they drink why would they have rigga bodies?::

I like the hard, cold, marble bodies! I like sensual bite as well. I usually like the telepathy too.

Melissa- I enjoy Lynsays twist to her vamps as well.

Melissa, I have to disagree about the telepathy. Mind reading has always bothered me because I for one have a mind that tends to go all over the place, no holds barred, and the idea that someone else could read my mind freaks me out. It would be very embarrassing.
And they always talk about how they can train themselves to be careful or keep their minds blank - I cannot do that. I have never been able to empty my thoughts or clear my mind or control what I think about. I would hate to be around someone that could read minds (nor have I ever had any desire to read anyone else's mind) so reading about it in books always makes me just a smidge uncomfortable.

Ahhh - I do like that. "Double your pleasure, double your fun..." :)
I read two of Lynsay Sands' books over a year ago, but I do remember that. All the vampires can mind read, and they know their mate because it's the one person they can't hear. Which was one of the things I didn't like about that series - I didn't like the idea that you would just immediately know who your mate was. Where's the romance in that?
It seems like mental powers are all over the place in PNR, but now that you mention it, n_u, I can't think of any specific examples! The vamps in the Adrian Phoenix books can talk to each other, and as I recall after sharing blood Dante was able to talk to Heather as well...
And V from the BDB can read minds.
And of course, Edward from Twilight.
But yeah, I know what Melissa's talking about - where they can either read each other's minds or feel each other's emotions so sex becomes like this endless feedback loop where they're feeling what they're feeling but also what the other's feeling and it never ends. Why can't I think of a specific book where that happened?

I haven't seen many instances of the mental thing with vampires though, outside of the examples you mentioned, Nichole.

I would love to see a real Otherkin vampire story though, that would be interesting...

I like the telepathy between wolves, that's pretty cool.

One of the reasons I like Jeri Smith-Ready's vamp series is that the heroine has to deal with not wanting to be bitten even though her boyfriend is a vamp. Ah, conflict :)

Add that to the reasons I prefer urban fantasy. That almost seems like a cop out to me. Why can't they have a HEA with each of them being something different?

Well, I agree with you, but one partner's immortality is kind of a relationship hurdle, you must admit. :)

See, I'm a sucker for being willing to grow old with your lover, even if they don't age. It's a more bittersweet love, but it's still love. The movie "Highlander" would be the first example to come to mind.

Okay, I'll confess, I've never seen Highlander. (Gasp!)
I for one am a fan of the rare but sometimes seen story where the immortal becomes mortal for their love and not the other way around. (I can think of one or two examples, but I can't say because I don't want to spoil those books for anyone.)
But I can't see how one staying immortal and the other one continuing to grow old would work. It would suck for both parties; one has to watch their love grow old and die, and the other has to get all old and gross while their love stays young and beautiful. Lose/lose, if you ask me. This is why Buffy and Angel broke up, right?

Sherrilyn Kenyon ("Dark-Hunter" series) is very good about not doing the same thing every time when it comes to who changes in the end, or if anyone changes at all.
But I can't see how one staying immortal and the other one continuing to grow old would work. It would suck for both parties; one has to watch their love grow old and die, and the other has to get all old and gross while their love stays young and beautiful. Lose/lose, if you ask me.
I think it shows a deeper love. One that isn't always sunny days. For the mortal partner, it's knowing you'll never be without them, and they'll go on and remember you after you're gone. For the immortal partner, it's enjoying every minute of your partner's life, valuing it for how brief and precious it is. It's heartbreaking, but it's beautiful and more real.

new_user I totally agree with you about the necrophilia issue. Yuck...just yuck. I've read a few of Lynsay Sands books and I like that they are different vampires. Especially that passing out thing.:D Also Lynn Viehl's vamps are different.
on the "one growing old while the other stays young" thing. Patricia Briggs has that problem with her werewolves. The weres are usually not willing to turn their loves because the turning is so hard to do, and many don't survive. I remember in the Alpha and Omega series, when the Marrocks pack is saying farewell to the vet (what IS his name??) and a little old lady goes up to tell a story about meeting him, and how the handsome young man is her husband and NOT her grandson as the Omega thought at first. Now THAT is true love. Staying there, still loving them even when they get old and you don't.

Yes, that's it exactly. *g*

On another note, I just finished reading Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer series and started the first book in her other/spinoff series about Dorina Basarab. I love these books, but I have one gripe about her vampire mythology. The vamps in her books don't have to bite to feed. They can just sort of absorb blood molecules through the air, or from skin to skin contact like shaking hands. I don't like it. It seems like cheating to me.

However, I was recently reading a series by Sara Reinke; her vamps did some kinda freaky thing when they were in blood lust. Their jaws unhinged and you could hear their bones popping out of joint... that kinda kills the mood for me. I mean seriously!!!
Loved the books but that little thing was a little freaky.
My favourite is when vampire bites are sexually charged, where it becomes an erotic occasion for biter and bitee :) (I have a sick mind..)
Most hated is the sparkly vampire bit from the Twilight series. Don't get me wrong, I still love the series..but the diamonds thing was a little bit much for me.
How about you??
