This morning I started The Birds by Tarjei Vesaas. I have just two more weeks to read whatever I want, then fall semester begins and I'll be reading student essays instead.

Has anyone read a great science fiction book lately? I took a science fiction book challenge. One of the tasks is to read a science fiction book from a goodreads members bookshelf. It has to be over 125 pages.

One of my groups is currently reading it, so you could get into a discussion if you like.

I'm not a science fiction fan so I'm a little nervous about it, but I trust him in his recommendations since it's his genre.
I tried to read Dune many years ago, might think about trying it again. Earth Abides sounds interesting, having trouble finding the book. I might have to order a used copy. Thanks for the great suggestions.

I just started reading Cold Fire by Dean R. Koontz. This is my first experience reading a book by him. So far, I am enjoying myself.
Starting The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny I'll finish The Forgotten Room later as it has a longer due date from the library.
Finished Cold Fire by Dean R. Koontz ... Now reading
. Less than one-hundred pages into the story and already feeling creeped out by the events taking place. So yeah ... I love it! lol
Finished The Underground Railroad. Starting A Great Reckoning. A new Louise Penny makes it feel like fall!
Just started a slow read. Baseball lovers and fans of Washington DC baseball will really enjoy this one.You Gotta Have Heart: A History of Washington Baseball from 1859 to the 2012 National League East Champions
I'm savoring it. So I might end up starting something else for a simultaneous quicker read to keep my challenge numbers up.
I just finished The Devil's Prayer by Luke Gracias and gave it 4 starsThis book is not for the faint at heart. In fact, it wisely comes with a disclaimer that "Readers may find its content offensive and confronting." That said, I found parts of the book to be fascinating, parts of it extremely creepy, and other parts a bit over the top. The books centers around a main character, Shioban, who is searching for the reason that her mother (Denise) disappeared eight years ago, and then recently appeared to commit suicide. The underlying basis of the story is based in historical fact, but the interpretation of the events belongs solely to the author. I loved the creepy parts of the book as well as the historical background, which I would like to research a bit more. At first, I was really disappointed in the end of the book, but then learned that a sequel is in the works and will be coming out this year. I am certainly looking forward to the sequel!
I finished The Silk Weaver - Liz Trenow today. It's historical fiction, based on true stories. As a Londoner, I found it fascinating to read about the history of Spitalfields & the French immigrants. As it's an area I don't know well, I went exploring today & found several of the streets mentioned in the book, also visited Christ Church. The area is just outside the City boundary, & has been the focus of immigrants for centuries. As each group become wealthier they move out to "better" areas. Do look for the history of what is now the Brick Lane mosque - it was built as a church for the Huguenots, eventually changed to a Jewish synagogue, & has now had a modern minaret added to use the building as a mosque. What amazing history! Today I walked past Georgian townhouses restored to their former glory & looking as described in the book, while others remain almost derelict.

I'm currently reading 'work smarter, not harder', and I'm gonna finish it today itself. Next I'll be starting 'Elon musk'
I just got my copy of Star Trek: No Time Like the Past by Greg Cox to be my quicker read as I mentioned in post #1290
I have just started reading Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner, and I am enjoying the different perspectives. It does seem to have a bit of a slow build so I'm ready for something exciting to come about in the second half!
I am so glad you are enjoying Catcher in the Rye, Maris.
I am reading The first fifteen lives of Harry August.

Finished listening to 'Look behind you' by Sibel Hodge. Ok knew the ending from the start! Now downloaded my favourite series by Alexander McCall Smith - The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency- The Miracle at Speedy Motors' I listen on way to and from work- hour commute!
I'm currently reading How to Be a BAWSE by Lilly Singh, aka IISuperwomanII on YouTube. It's her first book, and it's more like a guide book and testimony to how to conquer life challenges instead of just surviving. It's so colorful and pretty and her words and stories are so relatable to her audience, both young and older. Sidenote: Are there any reading sprints on this forum group? The only one that has one here is more than a year old.
Lord of Shadows, Good Omens, Ardent, The Bone Witch, A Madness So Discreet...that's all I can recall right off the top of my head.
I tend to read more than one book at a time, one of them usually being non-fiction or a slower moving classic. I make sure that those are the books I read before bed time, since they help me relax.
I have learned the price of reading an exciting book before bed- staying really late and then being unable to sleep after finishing it.

Hey Sonia, I only read an hour before bed so I only read one chapter then go to sleep afterwards after I write in my journal for the night.
Since my burn out I fall asleep reading even when I don't want to. So I don't have that problem anymore. On the contrary, I'm looking for tips how NOT to fall asleep...
Amber wrote: "you could always drink lots of coffee susy."lol, maybe I won't fall asleep completely but even then, I just can't keep my eyes open!
Susy, read a chapter, get up and walk around the house and then read another chapter walk again, untill you want to sleep. Sonia, maybe you could set an alarm to go off when you want to stop reading and go to bed.
I am reading the book 'Democrats and Dissenters' by Ramachandra Guha. It is a work of Non-fiction, a collection of essays that rummage through India's political history, constitutional inadequacies and press freedom among a lot of other topics.
Reading Return to Dragon Island by Claire Fayers and listening to Frost Hollow Hall by Emma Carroll. Love children's novels.
I'm currently reading Bound by Sarah Bryant along with After You by Jojo Moyes. I absolutely love After You so far as i really enjoyed the first book. I'm only on chapter 3 of Bound so far but i've found it easy to get into.
