I was planning to read 55 books next year, but now I got really encouraged and I'd like to raise my bet! It's 75 now :) Oh God! I'm scared!!!!
First of all, it's only me or this Reading Challenge thing makes you feel nervous? :) Anyway, I think I'll set my goal to 50 books for this year. :)
Good luck, Elena!
And yes, it makes me very nervous! But also excited. I love the thrill I get when I think of all the amazing (and not-so-amazing) books I'll read in the coming year. :)

Ohhh, Polish! I'm hoping to learn Polish some day. I'm a bit of a language nerd, always studying a new one, haha!
Thanks!
Thanks!

Is it similar to Russian? I've been learning Russian and having lots of fun with it. I think I read somewhere that Polish is similar in grammar and vocabulary, but with different pronunciation and spelling.
Faye wrote: "Is it similar to Russian?"It is, sort of, confusingly so at times (words that sound the same may mean completely different things), though Polish is a bit more complex in that it has more grammatical cases of nouns, adjectives etc. On the other hand, it uses latin script rather than Cyrillic one, so that's easier... it's all swings and roundabouts, really! I'd say if you enjoy learning Russian then Polish is a good next step. My Russian is very rusty... I really need to start studying it again - though probably not as part of my reading challenge ;) that would considerably slow me down!
I have never done a challenge before so I'm excited to see how this goes! My goal for 2014 is 26 books one published every year since I was born. Seeing as some of these are part of a series and there are just so many books I want to read, I may exceed 26 but I figure this is a good place to start.
P.S. I just finished the book I was reading and don't want to have to wait until January 1st to read again, so I may start the challenge early!!
Debi, I think we all have that feeling! My personal challenge this year is to read all the classics gathering dust on my shelves...
75 is the same goal I'm going for, although I'm tempted to push it to 100...

I know this might be a silly question... but I'm new to Goodreads so I'll go ahead! Does the Reading Challenge button appear on the main page on 1 January? Currently the 2013 Reading Challenge button is there, somewhere on the right-side.Thanks!
Ive only just joined goodreads and it's great to find there are so many readers out there! Nobody I know reads! I read for at least an hour or so a day and 2-3 books a week so I think 120 might be a good challenge for me to work towards. And go part of the way to reducing the huge to be read pile I own, and working my way through a few more of the 1001 books to read before you die list I'm trying to work through!
I'll be amazed if I can read 20, but that's my goal for 2014. It's nothing compared to all your big numbers, but it's what I think I might be able to manage in my life. Good Luck to you all! You all are super inspiring, I was only going to put 14 as my goal before I joined this group. I think I can muster up a 20 though ;)
I can't believe how many books you're all reading!! I've read 30 so far this year and was feeling pretty impressed with myself until I saw how many you've all been reading!! I've got a list of 100 books that I want to read but I think that would a very unrealistic goal for me so I'm setting myself the sand goal I set every year, one book a month but I've set a different challenge for each month to try and broaden my horizons a little. I will undoubtedly read more than 12 books but Ill stick with that for now :)
Sarah, 30 is a good number :) it doesn't matter how many books you read, but how much you learn and understand.
I read pretty much exclusively crime novels but have managed to be a bit more varied this past year. I'm feeling a really encouraged by this this thread though and might set a higher target than I normally do!!

That's awesome! I love Goodreads for that reason, too - a lot of people in my life read, but they read very different books than I do, so it's refreshing to come to a place where, no matter what the book, someone else has read it. :)
Great goals, everyone! Keep them coming!
And Sarah, I love that we've encouraged you to aim higher than usual for 2014! Good luck! :)

Today is my last day off work before Christmas and I've spent all afternoon looking a through all my books and making a list of all the books I want to read
Sarah, I must admit I'm prone to planning ahead too! I have a list of books in my mind that I really want to read in 2014! I can't wait to find out which ones you've picked!
Everyone's goals look amazing, and it's going to be so exciting working through them all!

I have also been planning as have reorganised some shelves ready to start!
Ooh I love a good plan! I'm a list-maker anyway, so joining Goodreads right before the end of the year only made this side of my personality show through even more. I've got a nice little list ready for the beginning of 2014. Perhaps we should have another thread where people can post their lists ;)
Holly wrote: "There is Personal Challenges that people can set up, but I'll definitely make that thread!"You're right Holly, I guess I was thinking more of a "Planned January reads" or something like that. Personal Challenges are a good place to post them too, though!
There is already a thread about our planned January Reading. You can find it here.
I've also made a general 'long list' thread of books people plan to read in the whole of 2014.

I'm not sure how many I will read for 2014 yet but on average I read a few books per month. So we'll see how many I get to starting in January and on.
I'm planning to read between 150 and 200 books. In 2012, I read 50 books, and this year I started out with the same goal, but then extended it to 100 books, as I spent most of my summer reading. This year I hope to make the most out of my free time and read even more. I'm also trying to increase my reading speed, so having more books to read will help with that too.
Bouchra, that's an amazing goal! I'd love to aim as high as 150 books, but at 100, I'm pushing it!
Good luck to you!
Good luck to you!
I'm new to creating a goal but since I have read over 40 books in a few months I'm going to go for 100 books for 2014.
I'm excited to plan the books I want to read next year but my mum has given me my Xmas presents today so I'm going to wait to finish my plan until I've opened all the book shaped ones :)
I think I'm going to set my goal at 40 books in 2014. I would go higher, but I worry that with school I won't be able to do more than that
