Okay, I've settled on a number - 90. The last couple years I've tried for 100 and 104, respectively, and it's been a mad rush at the end of the year to cram as many shorter books in as possible to meet the goal, so in 2014 I'll go a little easier on myself!

message 52: by عماد (new)

عماد العتيلي (emadreads) I was planning to read 55 books next year, but now I got really encouraged and I'd like to raise my bet! It's 75 now :)
Oh God! I'm scared!!!!

Haha, that's great, Emad! Just don't choose any 800-pagers for those extra 20 books!

message 54: by عماد (new)

عماد العتيلي (emadreads) Lol :)
Thanx for the tip!

message 55: by LadyElena (new)

LadyElena | 27 comments First of all, it's only me or this Reading Challenge thing makes you feel nervous? :) Anyway, I think I'll set my goal to 50 books for this year. :)

message 56: by عماد (new)

عماد العتيلي (emadreads) It does Elena! I'm already nervous:(

message 57: by Faye, The Dickens Junkie (new)

Faye | 1415 comments Mod
Good luck, Elena!

And yes, it makes me very nervous! But also excited. I love the thrill I get when I think of all the amazing (and not-so-amazing) books I'll read in the coming year. :)

Thanks Faye! It's Polish. Good luck with your 90!

Ohhh, Polish! I'm hoping to learn Polish some day. I'm a bit of a language nerd, always studying a new one, haha!

Thanks!

Same here :) Let me know if you pick it up - it's not the easiest language to master but it IS beautiful (though, of course, I'm strongly biased...)

Is it similar to Russian? I've been learning Russian and having lots of fun with it. I think I read somewhere that Polish is similar in grammar and vocabulary, but with different pronunciation and spelling.

message 62: by Ola (new)

Ola (polabear85) Faye wrote: "Is it similar to Russian?"

It is, sort of, confusingly so at times (words that sound the same may mean completely different things), though Polish is a bit more complex in that it has more grammatical cases of nouns, adjectives etc. On the other hand, it uses latin script rather than Cyrillic one, so that's easier... it's all swings and roundabouts, really! I'd say if you enjoy learning Russian then Polish is a good next step. My Russian is very rusty... I really need to start studying it again - though probably not as part of my reading challenge ;) that would considerably slow me down!

message 63: by Karen (new)

Karen Mockoviak I have never done a challenge before so I'm excited to see how this goes!
My goal for 2014 is 26 books one published every year since I was born. Seeing as some of these are part of a series and there are just so many books I want to read, I may exceed 26 but I figure this is a good place to start.
P.S. I just finished the book I was reading and don't want to have to wait until January 1st to read again, so I may start the challenge early!!

That's a very interesting challenge, Karen! Good luck. :)

Debi, I think we all have that feeling! My personal challenge this year is to read all the classics gathering dust on my shelves...

75 is the same goal I'm going for, although I'm tempted to push it to 100...

message 66: by Casey (new)

Casey | 8 comments I've never set a yearly goal so to start with I think I'm going to set my goal at 50!

message 67: by Ola (new)

Ola (polabear85) I know this might be a silly question... but I'm new to Goodreads so I'll go ahead! Does the Reading Challenge button appear on the main page on 1 January? Currently the 2013 Reading Challenge button is there, somewhere on the right-side.

Thanks!

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
As far as I know, it will, Ola. Then the 2013 one will be crossed off.

message 69: by Ola (new)

Ola (polabear85) Thanks Holly! Can you tell I can't wait...

Great goal, Casey!

And yes, the new Reading Challenge appears once the 2013 one ends. :)

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Ive only just joined goodreads and it's great to find there are so many readers out there! Nobody I know reads! I read for at least an hour or so a day and 2-3 books a week so I think 120 might be a good challenge for me to work towards. And go part of the way to reducing the huge to be read pile I own, and working my way through a few more of the 1001 books to read before you die list I'm trying to work through!

message 72: by Alyza (new)

Alyza 100 books. I tend to have a lot of free time so I aim for at least 100.

message 73: by Glady (new)

Glady (gladyanne) I'll be amazed if I can read 20, but that's my goal for 2014. It's nothing compared to all your big numbers, but it's what I think I might be able to manage in my life. Good Luck to you all! You all are super inspiring, I was only going to put 14 as my goal before I joined this group. I think I can muster up a 20 though ;)

message 74: by Ola (new)

Ola (polabear85) Good luck Glady!

message 75: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments I can't believe how many books you're all reading!! I've read 30 so far this year and was feeling pretty impressed with myself until I saw how many you've all been reading!! I've got a list of 100 books that I want to read but I think that would a very unrealistic goal for me so I'm setting myself the sand goal I set every year, one book a month but I've set a different challenge for each month to try and broaden my horizons a little. I will undoubtedly read more than 12 books but Ill stick with that for now :)

message 76: by عماد (new)

عماد العتيلي (emadreads) Sarah, 30 is a good number :) it doesn't matter how many books you read, but how much you learn and understand.

message 77: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments I read pretty much exclusively crime novels but have managed to be a bit more varied this past year. I'm feeling a really encouraged by this this thread though and might set a higher target than I normally do!!

message 78: by عماد (new)

عماد العتيلي (emadreads) Best of luck, Sarah :) it's really nice to have you here.

message 79: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments Thanks :) I'm going to be brave and say 40 I think!!

That's awesome! I love Goodreads for that reason, too - a lot of people in my life read, but they read very different books than I do, so it's refreshing to come to a place where, no matter what the book, someone else has read it. :)

Great goals, everyone! Keep them coming!

And Sarah, I love that we've encouraged you to aim higher than usual for 2014! Good luck! :)

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments Today is my last day off work before Christmas and I've spent all afternoon looking a through all my books and making a list of all the books I want to read

message 82: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Sarah, I must admit I'm prone to planning ahead too! I have a list of books in my mind that I really want to read in 2014! I can't wait to find out which ones you've picked!

Everyone's goals look amazing, and it's going to be so exciting working through them all!

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

I have also been planning as have reorganised some shelves ready to start!

message 84: by Ola (new)

Ola (polabear85) Ooh I love a good plan! I'm a list-maker anyway, so joining Goodreads right before the end of the year only made this side of my personality show through even more. I've got a nice little list ready for the beginning of 2014. Perhaps we should have another thread where people can post their lists ;)

There is Personal Challenges that people can set up, but I'll definitely make that thread!

You're right Holly, I guess I was thinking more of a "Planned January reads" or something like that. Personal Challenges are a good place to post them too, though!

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
There is already a thread about our planned January Reading. You can find it here.

I've also made a general 'long list' thread of books people plan to read in the whole of 2014.

message 88: by Ola (last edited Dec 18, 2013 01:07PM) (new)

Ola (polabear85) Thanks Holly, I haven't noticed those before! Will go and have a peek now.

message 89: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I'm not sure how many I will read for 2014 yet but on average I read a few books per month. So we'll see how many I get to starting in January and on.

message 90: by Bouchra (new)

Bouchra Rebiai (bouchrarebiai) | 86 comments I'm planning to read between 150 and 200 books. In 2012, I read 50 books, and this year I started out with the same goal, but then extended it to 100 books, as I spent most of my summer reading. This year I hope to make the most out of my free time and read even more. I'm also trying to increase my reading speed, so having more books to read will help with that too.

message 91: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Bouchra, that's an amazing goal! I'd love to aim as high as 150 books, but at 100, I'm pushing it!

Good luck to you!

message 92: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Chrystal (jamiec0628) | 1 comments I'm new to creating a goal but since I have read over 40 books in a few months I'm going to go for 100 books for 2014.

message 93: by Amber (new)

Dianne Landry (diannel) | 1 comments I plan on reading 100 books in 2014. I hope I can make it.

message 96: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments I'm excited to plan the books I want to read next year but my mum has given me my Xmas presents today so I'm going to wait to finish my plan until I've opened all the book shaped ones :)

message 97: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Sutton | 1 comments I think I'm going to set my goal at 40 books in 2014. I would go higher, but I worry that with school I won't be able to do more than that

message 98: by Jenna (new)
