It does have a lot of ghosts though, so I guess one could say it's Paranormal? ;)

You mean my book? I think it's good. Some parts are really harsh being victims (and ghosts) recounting what happened to them/their parents/villages or what they did. So far mostly only hints at what his brother did at that time and how much he was involved himself (being 14 at the time)but I feel I will find out soon enough (about 75 pages to go). I also like his style of writing, you can really see how that trip makes the main character feel.
So yeah, I guess if you're interested in Korean history at all, you should definitely read this book and probably his other works, too. This is the third book I'm reading that he wrote.

Yeah, I started reading it actually, and I'm really liking it so far. I don't have a lot of knowledge on the particular subject, but I don't feel completely lost so that's a plus. Yeah, some parts made me shudder in discomfort and terror, but overall, it's really interesting. Thanks for sharing it! Never would have found it otherwise :)

Indeed, in particular, one chapter was really bad. But it seems to me that he "just" describes it and doesn't treat it like something he wants to use to shock his readers. It's how it was and sometimes reality is the worst. :(
And yeah, I think in all his books, you don't need to know that much or anything. Still, for some things my books have annotations, which is useful, especially so one knows where to start if one wants to know more.
