Nicole D. my cousin gave me this book a few christmases ago and I read it and really enjoyed it.I would recommend it to any looking for a good heartwarming story

Megan I think I read this in fifth grade and it became one of the my favorite books (and still is). The illustrations are so cute and charming, and the whole story reminds me of a traditional fairy tale. I especially like how the author addresses her audience as individuals ("dear reader"). It is a very personal and heartfelt way of telling the story, and I think she did a swell job.

Shauna I've read this to my kids twice & they really loved it. The like the parts when we have to go look up words for their definitions and I love the language through out. It was such a sweet story.

Suki great book. my fourth, fifth and third grade teachers read it to the class.

Elisabeth Wheatley This book was so depressing! It's a kid's book right? And a fairytale-type one at that. So where's the Happily Ever After?

There were places in this book where I laughed, but I thought that the rat was a bit overtly dark and the ending was---for lack of a better term---a let-down. *Sighs*

So there, I've said it. It was a cute story, but I thought it wasn't light and fluffy enough. : )

I guess the total lack of "light & fluffy" was why I liked it so much. So many children's stories are just that- fluff. This was a change & seemed to have more depth. Not every story ends in happily ever after.

But I can understand where that would be off putting.

Have you ever read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (by the same author)?
