Hi, Paula! Eight books is a great start. Good luck!

Alanna Hello, all!

I"m a heavy library user, like some of you, and since my reading choices are mostly influenced by whim, I have more of a backlog on my shelves than I would like. It's peanuts to some of yours, though--only in the 50-75 range (some have disappeared from my GR list for some reason, and others I haven't put in yet for various reasons).

I'm committing to Mount Blanc for now, with a streeeeetch goal of Mount Kilimanjaro, which would eat up my list almost completely. :)

Welcome, Alanna! It's not the size of your mountain...but how you climb it! Good luck!

Allison (rainy-day-reads) I've been feeling overwhelmed by my TBR list and had already decided to focus heavily on reading the ones I already own this year. Glad to find a challenge to help keep me on track! Now the harder part is to try not to buy a ton more books in the meantime...

Welcome, Allison! Good luck not adding to the TBR piles. If it's any consolation...I never succeed at that.

CS (crystalstarrlight) Hello, I'm brand new to this group/challenge, but I just found you guys and realized that this goal is the EXACT SAME as mine.

My focus this year is on clearing out my TBR. No more buying physical books (OK, so I am buying some ebooks, but I'm focusing on buying ebooks of physical books I already have). I want to finish up series or at least decide if I want to finish the series.

A big question: do DNF's count? I ask because (and I suppose this specific example wouldn't count anyway because I got this book as an ARC, though it was over 4 years ago) I got 61 pages into a book I'd been meaning to read for eons but couldn't force myself to go further.

Anyway, I'm going to start with a modest goal of 12 - 1 TBR a month.

Thanks for this opportunity!

message 157: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) About time, you showed up. I asked about ARCs, and it depends how you got it. So the ARC I picked up at a book sale is fine, but an ARC some sent me to read and review is not.

I know last time (or the time before) DNF had to be at least half. I don't usually count them in my total.

I know!! I should have done this years ago, but I kept procrastinating - and I didn't want to stop buying books. But now I'm like, "Yeah, this is a ridiculous amount of books. Let's do this!"

Well, this particular book I'm talking about I got through Amazon Vine, so I did select it, but then I also kinda "have" to review it, so I'll just not include it. That will be a side goal, to wade through my Amazon Vine ARCs.

And 61 pages isn't halfway, unfortunately anyway. Ah, well, just means more books for me to get through! :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) It isn't about not buying books. I derive great joy out of that and it would make no sense to give up a sale of something we want, especially physical books. You're right that this group focuses on reading what you have since at least December 31, 2013. (Newer acquisitions work for many other wonderful themes that we do as well).

I don't believe in 'did not finish' but Bev is okay with it. It amounts to doing what you needed to finish with a novel. Welcome and good luck.

Welcome, Crystal Starr Light! Glad to have you join in 2014.

And, yes, DNF books count as long as you move them off your pile and have no intention of going back to them. I've actually never put any kind of limit on the DNF. My personal rule is that I have to read at least 100 pages before throwing in the towel--but as long as you feel that you've given the book a decent try and want to call it DNF, I'm good with that. The 50% rule is for books started anytime before Jan 1--You can count any book started pre-Jan 1 provided you had at least half or more left to read in 2014.

Jane (janesteen) | 43 comments Oooo! That clarification just added 3 TBR challenge books that I'm currently reading. Thanks.

Hello Crystal Starr Light! I have almost the exact same goals this year (except all of my books are ebooks now and I'm trying to slow down my ebook purchases), and I just found this group, too.

I'm trying to figure out how to fit series goals in with TBR goals. Since I mostly own first books in series, I think I'm going to have to sample a bunch to decide if I want to continue with them.

Hello fellow climbers
I just joined GR this morning ,after following the link from Reader's Block Blog page .
I haven't read much at all recently, but it's time to get back into it and try to get this Mountain of Books down to a Molehill .
For that reason, I thought this group might be just the thing I need .
I will sign up for Pike's Peak to begin .
I just started a book this week, so I've at least got my hiking boots laced up . :)

Welcome to the challenge, Book'Em! We're glad to have you join us for this year's hike. Good luck!

message 167: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Hi everyone! I know the year is over halfway gone, but I needed some encouragement to get through my TBR pile, so I joined in at the Pike's Peak level.

On my TBR shelf, I currently have 392 books, but every time I make progress on those, I go and buy more! Surely I'm not alone in this struggle... hehe :)

My favorite genres are memoirs and satire. I also enjoy sci-fi, chick-lit and fantasy.

I read in what I call phases - some months I can't do anything but read, and other months I hardly touch a book. Right now, I'm in a reading phase, so I'm taking advantage of that to get me started on this challenge!

Happy reading!

I struggle with that same problem Jessika! My TBR mountain is currently over 700 books, but I'm happy to report that I'm slowly bringing it down. I made a rule for myself that I could not BUY any more books. Under any circumstances! But I trade books online at BookMooch & PaperBackSwap, & I also trade in book at my local used book store. I can get all the books I want at those places, but I can't buy any books -- not even at library book sales.

I've been doing this for a couple of years now, so it's second nature to me not to buy, but it took some discipline when I first started. Rather like quitting smoking ... LOL.

Good luck with making your own system!
Kate

Jessika (jessika_56) Thanks for the encouragement! I used to be on Bookmooch, but it got too hard to get any decent books that I wanted when they enabled users to "reserve" books for other users. So I just stick with local used book stores and kindle freebies.

Allison (rainy-day-reads) Jessika wrote: "So I just stick with local used book stores and kindle freebies..."

I had to stop buying kindle freebies - it got so overwhelming! There's no way I'm going to be able to read all the ones I've bought. I also stopped looking at the Kindle deals which are cheap, but still add up! I'm trying to stick to a plan of only buying books that I already knew I wanted to read... with some success this year.

I am trying to stop with the Kindle freebies & deals, but it is so hard! But you are right, they add up so quickly! I have something like 350 unread Kindle books waiting, not to mention the actual print books...

I still get tempted. I deleted all my bookmarks to those pages so that it's harder to go look at them! I'm using ereaderiq.com to track the prices of books I know I want so I can still get deals, and that's helped.

Hi, Jessika! Welcome! And, no, you're not alone in that constant urge to buy more. I'm primarily a vintage mystery girl...but I also love science fiction and other genres as well.
