Syd | 6 comments This was a book I was obsessed with in my childhood. I used to carry it around. Please help me find it! I've been trying for years.
It was a small mammal and a rat or mouse I think on a raft trip down the river. I think the book was fairly long for a picture book with chapters about different stories on their trip. There's a race, and they eat peppermint at some point, and a gatekeeper for the river is talked to (I think he's a larger mammal or rodent). Also they rescue an animal baby from the river I think?
I thought it was called something like animal tales but I don't think that's true. It may also be some version of wind in the willows? Though I know the book is centered around the raft trip.

Could it be something by Arnold Lobel? The only one I've read is "Frog and Toad" but I think he did other small animals too. And his books are hellishly long, for picture books...they're more like little chapter books for 6 year olds. He does have one called Mouse Tales. I don't know if it involves a raft trip.

Syd | 6 comments No, it's not Lobel I don't think. None of the titles by him look like it's it, and it's not the same art style. Mouse tales is definitely not it. Thank you, though!

Syd | 6 comments I have never read the wind in the willows. If it's related, then it's some sort of spin-off. I looked through a copy the other day and none of it seemed familiar because the book I'm thinking of is exclusively focused on the raft trip and it's not as long.

Serendi When I was a kid, we had a picture book that turned out to be part of The Wind in the Willows, and I just looked at Kenneth Grahame's list and there are several series of excerpts from the book published separately. You might want to have a look.

Syd | 6 comments I'm going to guess that it's the River Bank and other stories. I'm going to obtain a copy and see if it matches up with what I remember. I can always move it back to unsolved. Thanks everyone for their help!
