Third quarter - (view spoiler)[I had forgotten that it takes almost all the first half before Katniss makes it to the arena. And then some of her first moments there are spent depicting traps and survival rather than brutality. I really appreciated how the early focus is spent on the surrounding world and character development before diving into the action.

Little Rue has my heart! Her discovery of the tracker jackers was genius! Although, to read it felt far more brutal than watching those scenes in the film. I love seeing Katniss and little Rue bond, following this. Despite both not being the typical Hunger Games victors, they have many strengths in different areas.

Rue also provides the reader with differences between districts 11 and 12. In comparison, life in 12 is far easier as there is lenience in being the most poverty-stricken and so overlooked.

Getting to love Rue made saying goodbye just as hard, no matter that I knew it was coming! The reader is given no choice but to immediately love her character and want to protect her vulnerable little self. I kept the tears in until Katniss received the bread from District 11. That's a touch I wished they had kept into the films. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[Karma is at play here, as Katniss is allowed to live due to her treatment of Rue. It allows her to return to Peeta. The book feels more romantic than I remembered. It focuses more on their romance, or pretend one, but it is sweet to see the genuine tenderness between them, even if it is obviously far more heartfelt on one-side.

The ending was every bit as dramatic and tense as I recalled! The Mutts being somehow infused with something from the other tributes was horrific. Also, both Katniss and Peeta suffered horrific injuries in the arena, which aren't in the movies and I really wished they were included. It both would have felt more authentic and it is empowering to see them continue to thrive with them. (hide spoiler)]

I like that hes different then most boys and doesnt know how to fight apart from wrestling and is more skillfull with a paintbrush! Katniss is just amazing. i love Archery and reading about Archers so i liked that its her choice of weapon and even though shes a hunter she wasnt happy about killing people but did what she had too. (view spoiler)[ honestly this is supposed to be the big part of the book with the climax of the plot. However, this narrator really didn’t build it up at all. The action that happens is dulled down a lot because of her tone in her voice and I’m just sitting her like oh crap here everything happens. But, she just made it like the rest of the book and like yeah whatever. I love Peeta and Katniss though and I hope this relationship continues. (hide spoiler)]

Anyone else re-reading this after a few years and liking it just as much but feeling like it's a lot less intense than in your memory?

I still love the book, but there is no deep feeling of suspense anymore. I mean I obviously know the story so the surprise factor is gone. But I feel like I'm reading a retelling of it rather than the really intense story I remember reading years ago...

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that...

(view spoiler)[ I knew that Peeta liked Katniss but I don't think she does. I would be very embarrassed if I told strangers plotting my death who my crush was. But everything he has done makes so much sense now and I am just surprised Katniss never caught on.

I don't know but I found it very funny when Haymitch was saying awful things about Katniss's personality and she got so mad about it. I find him hilarious but it is good he is kinda sobering up and becoming useful. (hide spoiler)]

I am so happy she teamed up with Rue. She knows a lot about plants and nature and she is seems sweet. I like hearing how her district works but I hate that the Mayor is awful.

I wish Katniss could see that Peeta is trying to save her and not sabotage her. I really do think he cares for her.

Also, I think Katniss and Rue are going to steal the Career's weapons. I am just worried about what is going to happen once it comes down to less than 5. Although someone has to win I don't want Rue to die.

Poor Rue, she was one of the good ones but I liked what Katniss did with the flowers and that she is more determined to win for Rue.

I don't know what I was expecting but I can't believe what happened to Peeta, yikes. I can't believe Haymitch hasn't sent Peeta anything, looks like he needs it the most.

Yes I do. I haven't read the book in ages but I watch the movie every once in awhile. Its not so thrilling like it was the 1st time ever read it.

You know, I think my favorite part of the book is actually the last chapter. It's when we start to see more of the secondary characters of course, but also hints of the underlying tensions behind the scenes. I find it fascinating!

I had never actually considered reading this trilogy..You know when you keep seeing a book everywhere, be it Goodreads, YouTube, random lists of "books you should read before you die", and it turns you off that book. This is what happened with me for The Hunger Games.
And then, my best friend recently read it, and she hasn't shut up about it ever since. She had been pestering me to read it every time we talked...so here I am :D
