Oh, he'll likely be good for nothing useful, but the crew doesn't know that so it seems odd that Roy was singled out for "why aren't you doing anything helpful?" treatment.

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Remember that they've been on board with Belkar for several days.

Also, the lack of muscle and size is self-evident.

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Fair point. A few minutes with him is probably enough to discourage trusting him with any sort of task.

Not so sure about this one - they asked Roy to pitch in with magic, it was Belkar that pointed out Roy's strength when Roy objected that he doesn't practice magic. Belkar could easily have magic to use as far as they know. (I know I'm nitpicking, the combination of assuming Roy had useful magic and ignoring Belkar just seemed really odd to me).

Ok, now I'm happy - Roy voiced my concern in comic. And Belkar's teasing response is great.

Interesting stuff at the end. How will evil Durkon try to talk his way out of this?

message 55: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments It's interesting to ponder what Thor really is up to. Mind you, its starting as soon as they reach the region, and its deliberate aiming, point to intention, but they don't prove it -- and they don't prove exactly what he's trying to do.

Not crash the ship with all hands, to be sure, but that could only mean he wants them to finish the quest after.

message 56: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
True, and one ponders why Thor wouldn't be more overt if he's trying to draw attention to faux-Durkon.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots09...

Ok, not the greatest turn for our heroes, but pretty funny all the same.

message 57: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Yeah. Though if the storm is Thor-directed, one wonders whether a mere clerical spell can fix it. Divine intervention is like that.

OTOH, Thor may be limited in what he can do, because of their quest.

Well, Rich certainly came up with a great loophole around that issue.

Belkar's line of reasoning at the end is awesome.

message 59: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Yup.

One wonders if Belkar will die of shock when he learns he's right.

message 60: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
I've been wondering if Belkar's prophesied death will come from Evil Durkon trying to prevent Belkar from realizing he's right (or convincing anyone else). It still seems "early" in the story to kill Belkar, but Rich has done major unexpected shake ups before...

message 61: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments It would be a logical reason for his death.

But we shall see. Even Haley's grabbing her prophecy and actually curing herself didn't work out as she expected.

message 62: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
True - Rich seems to be taking a lot of pride in twisting the prophecies in many unexpected ways.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots09...

Love the deciding factor between outrage and anticipation.

message 63: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Yes, that's some sweet interaction between them.

Straight up confrontation probably wasn't the best idea, but nice to know Belkar's not giving up and I love the explanation of why he knows something's wrong.

message 67: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Yeah, well, if only he hadn't tipped his hand earlier, Belkar might actually have a case there.

message 68: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Oooh -- yet another thing where, I suspect, Durkon is trying to corrupt from within.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots09...

Err -- de-corrupt? Purify? Can't be restore since Hel created it rotten to the core. . . perhaps "straighten out."

Susie Schroeder (Susieschroeder) | 1 comments Hi, all. I love TOotS and I am betting Belkar is gonna figure out a way to unmask pseudo-Durkon.

Oh, and about today's script, all I can say is, ew!

Susie wrote: "Hi, all. I love TOotS and I am betting Belkar is gonna figure out a way to unmask pseudo-Durkon."

I'm thinking the same. I just hope it isn't as a dying act…

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots09...

… and he seems to be in more of a battle of annoyance with Durkon for the time being. I like the conversation with V and V's "wait and see" approach.

"What a completely unprecedented reaction to spending more than ten minutes in your company" is possibly V's best quote ever.

message 71: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Well, Belkar's discovered a new way to keep up the intraparty conflict.

… well, at least Roy tried to consider Belkar might be right.

message 73: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Somebody should have learned the first rule of interrogations:

"Ve are askink ze questions here!"

Letting the subject get at you is wrong, wrong, wrong -- and it's very good that Durkon is trying it.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots09...

message 74: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Totally. Anything to disrupt evil Durkon's concentration/plans/etc.

"If you didn't want your private memories ransacked, you shouldn't have formed them in the first place!" is some grade A twisted justification.

message 75: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments But it is both a current reference -- to the hacked selfies and the justifications put forth for viewing them -- and an evergreen one, since pirates often blame writers for having published books, which, in the pirates' eyes, gives them no grounds to complain about infringements.

message 76: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
True, and it's just as ridiculous and twisted a justification in those cases too.

Durkon's got a plan. Yay!

"From now on, if one member of the team is being eaten, go ahead and assume you should do something about that." is going to have me laughing all night.

message 78: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Durkon needs Mark Twain's advice.

"We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it and stop there lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid again and that is well but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore."

message 82: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Indeed. At the very least it seems he'll soon have Roy isolated...

message 83: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments OTOH, Hel probably wants to get at the dwarves, not the gnomes, so this may be just the first move.

Or even just beefing up his story.

Some hints as to what Dark Durkon is up to. I'm starting to feel the comedy bits with him almost being revealed to Roy are making Roy look less intelligent than he's supposed to be. It hasn't quite crossed the line yet, but any more of it is going to bother me...

message 87: by Mary (new)

O_o Totally didn't see that coming. Guess it was about time for something to go horribly wrong for our heroes, but I had kind of forgotten about the thieves guild, and of course expected Crystal to be resurrected if we saw her again at all.

message 89: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Yeah. The eyes could have been Thog's as well as Bozzok's.

Apparently he didn't spring for a resurrection.

message 90: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
I hadn't thought of Bozzok for the eyes - was assuming Thog.

Guess not. And "I'll kill anyone he sends, especially you" isn't much of a threat now...

message 91: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Just read Blood Runs in the Family.

and so remembered that Geoff did get off the message telling where Haley was going.

message 92: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments More reflections on the book:

the final fight scene does indeed read well when read in rapid succession.

Though I wonder if the next backstory book is going to Tarquin's team, so we can find out what happened when Nale was nine. Was this one of his disproportionate revenges? Or perhaps his habit of disproportionate revenge sprung from frustration that his own father and the rest of his team sheltered Malack after he did something dreadful to Nale.

message 93: by Mike (new)

Just got mine. Hoping to have time to read it next weekend.

Mary wrote: "Though I wonder if the next backstory book is going to Tarquin's team, so we can find ou..."

That would be nice. I'm quite interested in Nale/Malack's backstory and the same questions you raise.

message 94: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 986 comments Not quite up to par. Too much info-dumping.

Though the punchline is grand.

message 95: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Agree. Feels like Rich was trying to get the explanation out of the way.

Also agree. It reminds me a little of a great gag from Psych where the main character is chasing someone on skis and has this exchange with his partner:
"There's only one move he can make I can't follow!"
"What's that?"
"There it is!"
"The slow gentle turn?"
"That's the one!"

message 97: by Mike (new)

Yeah. Great set-up, great action, great punchline. I hope we see this couple in the background of a future strip enjoying their retirement in the tropics.
