Lazlo Ferran (lazloferran) | 3 comments Forgive me moderator if I am posting where I shouldn't; there seems to be almost no visible activity in this group so I am going to break the ice.

My named is Lazlo Ferran. I am a writer and I love history; I couldn't study history at school so perhaps that's one of the reasons I now have a passion for it. Early (High) Medieval is one of my specialies. I first started to learn a lot about this period when I researched my family tree. It took ten years but I eventually located my earliest known ancestor - a Knight (Chevalier) in Languedoc, France in 1240. From here I studied books about the Cathars and French nobility and monasteries so that I can now write with some authority on this place and time. I also offer my services as a copy editor and copy developer in this genre.
My other historic speciality is World War II and particular air-force history. I have always been passionate about old aircraft and have a great store of knowledge on the subject. I have just published Attack Hitler's Bunker! - a war thriller about a squadron of Short Stirlings and Hurricanes who attack Hitler using unusual techniques. Proceeds for the first two years will go to The Stirling Aircraft Society.

I do also write Sci-fi books which draw on the history of cultures and technical knowledge so there is a tie-in.
You could also loosely describe some of my historical novels as fantasies althoug the history in them is for the most part accurate: werewolves and vampires are my favourite topics. The Ordo Lupus series, beginning with Ordo Lupus and the Temple Gate are suspense thrillers about werewolves and vampires but with a heavy dose of history much along the lines of Dan Brown stories.
Currently I am engaged on some more exotic subjects - publishing an erotic mystery and a WWII/Sci-fi novel as well as developing a straight vampire story.
I would love to hear from any of you.
Yours
Lazlo

Hello!

My name is Michel Poulin and I live on the South Shore region of Montreal, Canada. I am 58 years old and am a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces with 32 years of service. I am married, with two grown sons, and am working presently as a night security guard. As an ex-military intelligence analyst, I have strong and continuing interest in military history and technology, history, air and space technology and geopolitics. My passion is writing (I am a Goodreads.com author and am also published online on Free-eBooks.net and Foboko.com, where I post my books for free). My favorite genres are science-fiction, military fiction and historical fiction. My books are mostly geared around time travel but cover often (and a lot) World War 2, thus my interest to join this group. I am hoping to participate in many interesting discussions about the military on this group.

N.B.: Since there is another author named Michel Poulin on Goodreads.com, to get to my site, you must type my name with a double space between the first name and the family name.

J.W. Horton (jwhorton) | 1 comments Hello. I have always had an interest in military history, esp. WWI and WWII. The former is also connected to my interest in the German Revolution of 1918/19 and the Weimar Republic. It's not only the specifics of the battlefield or the technicalities of the machinery that interest me (I am a treadhead, for example) but the politics of it that interests me too. I have written two novels connected to WWI (one of which is published)

Roger Cave | 5 comments Hi guys

Just joined the group, it seemed relevant to me as I write (or try to) about a small group from the Special Boat Service (like the US Navy SEALs).

I'm running a promo at the moment and looking what else it out there that is similar to the stuff I produce.

Alex Zapata (thepassinreview) | 1 comments Hey all,

I'm new to Goodreads and was looking for some like minded individuals to chat about military themed books, articles, etc. I spent 6 years active duty Infantry in the US Army and am currently a college student. I also run an arts magazine called The Pass In Review.

Glad to meet everyone!

great to see some attention given to the Stirling for a change. An underrated aircraft in my estimation, or at least one that was never developed to its potential unlike the other RAF four-engines heavies. Sounds like an interesting book (fiction I presume?) and I shall look out for it. Good luck with it, and I hope there are lots of proceeds for the Stirling Society.

Gerard Fleck (gerardfleck) | 3 comments I am interested in getting recommendations on great military books. I like books that show the good and the bad of the military. I served in the US Navy for 6 years and it was the best and the worst experience in my life. I like patriotic tales like IN HARMS WAY and FIELDS OF FIRE, but also like irreverent true stories like THE LAST DETAIL and FULL METAL JACKET. I enjoyed THE THINGS THEY CARRIED and BUFFALO SOLDIERS. I don't want to just read stories about heroes who are patriotic. I don't want to just read stories about killing the enemy with high tech weapons, because we know that's not the only thing that goes on the military. What recommendations do you have?

Well, for starters:

The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat

Winged Victory by V. M. Yeates

Goshawk Squadron by Derek Robinson

Das Boot: The Boat by Lothar-Günther Buchheim

Gerard, risking a little self-promotion, in my Goat Game: Thirteen Tales from the Afghan Frontier I tried to capture some of the less Rambo, more subtle and realistic side of special operations. I think you might enjoy it.

Hi Barry, I'm a Vietnam vet and if you want books on the good and bad of the military, two of the finest I've read are A Bright Shining Lie by Neil Sheehan, which won both the Pulitzer and National Book Award. It chronicles one officer's attempts to convince superiors that the war should be fought another way.

The second book is Soldier by Anthony Herbert. Herbert, the most decorated soldier in the Korean War, also commanded one of the most successful units in Vietnam, and he angered his superiors because he did nothing by the book. His tactics were far more effective than what the military was teaching. He was also an Inspector General who protected his men. When he reported war crimes by a U.S. unit, he was drummed out of Army. This memoir by him skewers the military for its outdated and inefficient battle tactics.

Jerri Gibson | 18 comments Dec. 7, 1941, is "a date which will live in infamy" then U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt predicted.
In honor of this date, we are offering my historical fiction novel, “The Liberators”, on Amazon’s Kindle program at one-sixth the cost for only $.99 starting December 7, 2014 and the following five days. The inspiration for “The Liberators” came from a close relative who was the bombardier of a B-17 plane and the numerous events he experienced are depicted in this novel. He passed away on October 30, 2013. Our WWII heroes are dying at a fast pace and they need to be honored and remembered for their unselfish service for you and me and our great American freedom. If you enjoy my novel, please write a short review on Amazon. Go to books, The Liberators by Jerri Gibson McCloud.

Jerri Gibson | 18 comments I've another message which is important for an Admiral and a General. Please read below:

There two other American military men that should be honored on December 7, 2014. Yes, 2014. They are Admiral Husband Kimmel, Commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Army Maj. Gen. Walter Short, who have been wrongfully stripped of their four and three-star ranks due to an egregious mistake that has never been rectified December 7, 1941. Though Maj. Kimmel’s son, grandson, and nephew have fought year after year for his restoration-of-respect, depicted in the link below, this man deserves his 4-star status reinstated.
October 2000, Congress by a unanimous bi-partisan vote, adopted the conference report of the Defense Authorization Act of 2001 in which it requested the President to take necessary action to restore Admiral Kimmel and General Short to their highest wartime ranks, that of 4-star Admiral and 3-star General, respectively. President Clinton signed the Act on October 30, 2000. Everything is completed except for the signature of the President.

Won’t you please write your Senator to push the President to help take necessary action to restore Admiral Kimmel and General Short to their highest wartime ranks, respectively? Also, write or call the President and urge him to take this action. Please don’t let another year pass without this happening. Thank you!!!

I will add links to additional information on the Admiral and General either below or on the posting.

Gerard, I'm an historical fiction writer ("Hearts, Minds, and Coffee" about Vietnam) and I recommend "Soldier" by Anthony Herbert and "Word of Honor" by Nelson DeMille. These books might fit the profile you requested.

Jerri Gibson | 18 comments I would like any or all to read my novel, The Liberators, by Jerri Gibson McCloud. It’s a fast paced WWII novel about a B-17 pilot. The sequel is due out in 2015. I write historical fiction because the research is never ending and becomes an addiction. I love fast paced novels and that’s how I write. If you would like, I would be happy to gift you a Kindle version of my book. We all need reviews and if you like it, I would appreciate a review. As one of my Amazon reviews read, ‘Keep your flak jacket on and parachute handy when you read this!
