Please take a look at this site www.AuthorTrade.com.

If you think it's a good idea and you use Amazon.co.uk then you are missing out because they restrict applications to people with Amazon.com accounts.

Without breaking any laws by completely duplicating their idea, are there any clever people based in the UK prepared to create/offer something similar to this idea? Alternatively, does something similar already exist for new UK authors?

AuthorTrade.com does encourage people to switch accounts to Amazon.com but this is not really a satisfactory way forward. They also say they will open things to other extensions when demand dictates.

On the other hand, perhaps you don’t think it’s a good idea. Either way I am interested in your comments/views.

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Oh not author trade again.

Let's not try to replicate something that's already been shot down on KUF for being massively unethical. (http://www.kuforum.co.uk/kindleusersf...)

Only this morning I was attacked for being indie. Many people have already told you that the indie community doesn't want to be associated with the sort of system-manipulation. So please stop promoting it.

Jim | 21809 comments I got a bad feeling when the website used the phrase "AuthorTrade.com's involvement is completely unknown to the public. Only you, your publisher (if you have one), and the author you're trading with will know the secret to your marketing genius."

For me the marketing genius comes in the fact that they are not only a part of Amazons affiliate advertising program but I'd guess that when you 'swap' books you're they get a cut of the price through the affiliate scheme. The author spends money on other peoples books, OK they may have the books but they've still spent the money.

Ignoring the dubious system-manipulation side of it, I wouldn't get involved because of the cost!

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments David, if you're struggling to get noticed here's an alternative to Author Trade.

Make positive contributions to the publishing world. Say witty encouraging things in forums. Write blog posts focussing on ethical ways to promote books. If you adopt the right attitude, readers might give your books a try and hey presto - reviews.

Repeatedly posting about schemes that send the majority of authors running for the hills, is only harming your reputation.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hear, hear Rosen!

As a reader who loves a great many indie books, I'd not ever recommend an author who I suspected of using unethical tactics to inflate their success.

David Hadley Pity mine are ebooks.

If they were physical books I could offer a FREE rasher of bacon bookmark with each copy.

Perhaps you could introduce sound effects so that opening the ebook is accompanied by a tempting sizzle.

David Hadley With the development of faster broadband, WiFi and 3d printing, I'm sure that the day of downloadable ebacon is drawing closer.

Pigs will fly (through the ether)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Yes, but the bacon print cartridges will cost a fortune...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think this is a record time for going off topic in a thread.

message 17: by David (new)

David Hadley Back in the old pre-web internet days of newsgroups, I used to be part of a group that made it a point of honour to go off-topic as soon after a thread's first post as possible.

I like to think I keep the old traditions alive.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think it's a great tradition.

But I would say that, wouldn't i?

Just like all roads lead to Rome, all forum threads should - sooner, rather than later - end up talking about bacon.

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments I keep intending on employing a proper marketing offensive, but instead end up prattling on about old sitcoms and thinking about bacon. Plus my new laptop has a touchscreen so have been spending an inordinate amount of time poking at fifteen year old video games to see if anything happens.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I heard on the radio this morning that bacon is the best thing to add to anything to make it more tasty
(but the chap on the radio was doubtful about it being good mixed with apple crumble)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Apple and bacon is delicious!

Alan, if you go to the facility that enables the searching of this group's discussion posts and type in 'bacon' you'll find that few threads reach their end without this splendid comestible putting in an appearance.
It's a bit of a swine really.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oooooo.

'Squid' and 'custard' would be good search terms as well.

And 'poop'. Poor David is never gonna live that one down.

I'm not sure in what tone of voice I should be reading Patti's 'Oooooo', but at the risk of appearing even more foolish than I usually do, I'll explain that my comment about bacon being a bit of a swine was a joke.

Well, while we're on it, we may as well Godwin this thread by saying that Hitler didn't eat bacon!

Off-topic and Godwinned in record time :)

Now CHOCOLATE bookmarks - there's a genius idea. Just think, you'd need to eat the bookmark in order to save damaging the book. I could be selfless and manage that.
