I am so glad to see someone else who felt the same way I did! I agree thank you Ms. Roth for not doing the cookie cutter HEA ending!
It was a sad ending. A really sad ending there is no denying. But I guess it makes sense that Tris was the one who died. She was the one who started it all and i guess she should be the one to end it too. And I guess it was good that she died a noble death. She wasn't being a coward. She wasn't being selfish. She was being selfless and she was being brave. That definitely came across. Thank you Veronica Roth for writing a novel that truly means something amazing <3
Although I was hoping that no one would die and the ending would have all the characters living "happily ever after," I had the sense reading it that either Tris or Tobias would die. It just seemed like that type of book to me. While I was unhappy with the fact that Tris did die, I was very satisfied with how everything ended. It was definitely more realistic, and I think more in character, for Tris to sacrifice herself and for not every character to make it through to the ending. It also allowed for great character development that enforces the message I think Veronica Roth was trying to send. So brava to Ms. Roth. It was a very brilliant ending.

I despise the fact that now-a-days, in order for a book to be good, it has to have a happy ending where the heroine/hero end up together and live to tell the tale.
I'm tired of reading the same thing over and over again and this ending was just so refreshing. Now I love reading those kinds of books because come on, who wants to read a series for three years and have it all end with the main character dying? Well no one really but if we look at the grand scheme of things, life isn't a faery tale (okay books maybe) and not everyone defeats their demons because just sometimes, one has to make the ultimate sacrifice that will not just benefit oneself but people as a whole. It is not always easy but every decision and choice we make has an outcome that leads us to next step and so on; that was Tris outcome for every decision and choice she made.
I love the fact that Veronica has broken the cycle of happily ever afters and went for something more real rather than the usual crap best-selling authors try to sell us. Come on people did you guys seriously expect a happy ending? They weren't fighting against just one person. In my opinion, there wasn't really someone to defeat but a GOVERNMENT to change. If you want Government to change, you have to start by electing people that are open to change and our willing to get things done.
Now I know that some of you think that that wasn't a happy ending but in a sense it was. Happy endings can be a variety of outcomes depending on what I've said, decisions and choices. Tobias in a sense, got his happy ending. He was able to accept the death of Tris and move on rather then dwell on self-pity. And because of her choice, he was able to become a part of Government and get things to start changing. Now he didn't get the girl but he got an ending suiting to him.
So yeah totally refreshing. THANK YOU VERONICA ROTH FOR BREAKING THE CYCLE.
PS: I feel like her books should have been published on Wattpad.com instead of being published on paper.
