Ashlee | 3 comments Hi all,

Sorry I dont remember much about these books, but i loved them as a pre-teen. Read them around 1999/2000 but they could have been published prior. The kids of the story were in some old mansion, there was lots to do with animals, (a dog fighting ring at some point). It was magic based, and they were learning as they went, most of it was based on things that happened years ago, all around alchemy and trying to make gold. If I remember anything else I will add it.

There were 4 books in the series I believe. Thanks in advance for your help

A search on your keywords brought up this. Is this quartet what you're looking for?

bookel | 4018 comments Copied from above:

The Magician's House is a quartet of children's fantasy books by William Corlett. Two mini-series were produced in 1999 for British television, which were directed by Paul Lynch. The series featured Jennifer Saunders and Stephen Fry voicing some of the animal characters.

The books were published in the early 1990s, and named as follows:

The Steps up the Chimney
The Door in the Tree
The Tunnel behind the Waterfall
The Bridge in the Clouds

bookel | 4018 comments This is what brought up the result on Google: magic alchemy book mansion animals series.

So writing out your query definitely helps to identify keywords.

The TV series looks great. In fact I'm wondering if it's the TV series I saw a small bit of about a mansion and magic, and it was British I think ... it could be this. Trying to find an opening theme. I never read the books.

Ashlee | 3 comments I kept getting hits of 'the secrets of the immortal nicholas flamel' & 'the alchemyst' but yeah you had some different keywords to me. Explaining it to someone else made me add some other things, I didn't use mansion or animals.

I never saw the adaptation for tv, but I loved the books. I'm wanting to get my nephew interested in reading and was trying to remember good books I had read at his age (11-12). Thanks again for your help

bookel | 4018 comments My library has the books, so I'll give them a try.

It was the keyword series in that string of words that brought up the answer. :)

bookel | 4018 comments If anyone finds the opening theme of that TV series please let me know? I seem to recall scenes of going over dark green trees to view a mansion. It seems like the TV series I've been thinking of lately anyway!
