Two little girls who are neighbors befriend each other. They create an imaginary horse who has a stable between their houses and flies them to an imaginary land.
When one of the girls goes away to summer camp, the other girl get's very lonely. Meanwhile, the dog of another neighbor has puppies. When the girl comes home from camp, he gives them one of the puppies and builds a dog house between their houses.

Sounds like a good story. What year did you read it? Was it new at the time?

I read it about ten years ago and I don't know if it was new then or not.

YES! I've been searching for the name of this same book for ages. Thanks to OP and bookel for helping me find it. I must have been mashing some of the story with another picture book from my childhood, but I recognize that cover.
