Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I was watching a booktuber talk about exactly why she reads and why she loves reading so much. I thought it was so beautiful because it was very personal and she had so many emotions making the video and she said that is because books are so powerful and can leave imprints on people.

Why do you read? Is it to escape from problems in your daily life? Or for some other reasons? Did you start reading while going through a hard time in your life and just kept reading because it helped you in that time of need? Everyone has a different story so let's share!

message 2: by Chantae (new)

Chantae B. | 114 comments I started reading when I was young and i guess I just liked it so much I continued to read more and more. I just like how books can take you to different places and I do think for some people when they read a certain book it can have an impact on them.

message 3: by Dahiany (new)

Dahiany (clockworkocean) | 10 comments I wasn't really into reading until I discovered the magic and reality it brought to my life. After I got through the Chronicles of Narnia in middle school, I started to look for other books of my interest. I found out that I mostly enjoy any genre, because they all have something in common: they bring you to different worlds and let you become those characters. You have the chance to express yourself, or tag along with the characters in an adventure. Some books made me feel more alert and my sense ignited.
Reading has also changed my life in terms of how I act, feel, and my perspective of the world has changed.
The outcome has definitely been in a positive way (:

Eliza (ramblybookworm) | 107 comments I started reading at a really young age so I guess it was something which was just a part of me from a young age. I think it's amazing how different books can evoke different emotions and even to see how authors can think of different kinds of worlds and I too feel like I'm living in the world he/she created!

message 5: by -RininTa- (new)

-RininTa- (rinz) | 1090 comments I love books since I was a kid. I like the feeling when you start to get into it - like you are in your own world. Many books involve emotions and sometimes I feel like the characters from the book. I feel their sadness, happiness, lost, etc. Some of the books are really helpful for me e.g. book of how to..., and personality improvement. That's why I like reading a lot! :D

message 6: by Joi (new)

Joi | 989 comments I have been reading for a long time. Ever since I can remember to be exact. As I grew older, reading became more than just a hobby, it became a way of life. I don't know where I would be if it weren't for books. Reading helps me to escape from my reality, I get to go to another world and relax. A good book can evoke so many emotions, and I enjoy them all. Reading is my safe house, and books are my friends. My BEST friends to be exact.

message 7: by Suzieq (new)

Suzieq | 3 comments At first it was just for fun but now reading is more like a part of my life. I enter my dream world as I read books and feel like god watching other people from the heaven. And I really like being obsessed with the characters in the books and shouting at the book when they're about to make some stupid mistakes.

message 8: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (jennasilver) | 53 comments I have been reading since I was really young. In between having kids I didn't read a lot. I started reading again when I got really sick and have not stop since.
When I read I can forget I'm still sick and escape reality, I think I'm addicted to reading and I love to read.

message 9: by Kateryna (new)

Kateryna Kei | 2 comments I hated learning to read. However, my grand-ma figured a remedy to that - she put away the school book and gave me instead a really fascinating, impossible to put down story for kids to practice my reading. And, despite my hater of the long and tough process that reading was then, I found that I wanted to know what was going to happen next so much, that I kept reading, even though my grand-ma fell asleep and was no longer checking whether I was actually reading.
Some stories are drawing like magnets, making us dive into the wonderful and miraculous world of the author's imagination, and, personally, it inspires me and stimulates my own fantasy.

message 10: by Veronica (new)

Veronica | 164 comments I saw a quote the other day that I loved. "Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are" Well, I read to delve into another world different from my own. I have always loved reading but then stopped but now I have started again and it makes me happy especially during tough times.

message 11: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Frankel | 410 comments I always loved reading, even as a child. I think I started when I was around four years of age or maybe less, but it was always easy for me. Moreover, as many have said before me, I could go places in my head that the writer provided. I just had to supply the imagination. As the saying goes, the best adventures begin and end in your own backyard. It's oh so true. Reading will take you places--you just have to let it.

message 12: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Winters I like to read to escape the real world. I like to imagine all the what ifs in life, and stepping into a character's shoes helps me with that.

J.S. Frankel | 410 comments Sabrina wrote: "I like to read to escape the real world. I like to imagine all the what ifs in life, and stepping into a character's shoes helps me with that."

Perfect answer!

Jojobean | 553 comments lol to escape from the real world for awhile

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sbrock36) | 47 comments I come from a family of big readers. My mother would read to me as a child and I believe that is what began my obsession with books. Today, I read as a way to escape. I'm trying to follow in my mother's footsteps and instill a love of reading in my own children.

message 16: by elora (new)

elora (lesoleilanuit) I've been burying my nose under books since i was in kindergarten. though i still didn't know how to read that time, I was always fascinated by books and the feeling of wanting to know the meaning behind those lined words ached me. READING IS A FREE TICKET TO EVERYWHERE! books are attachments, lovely companions and reading is how I interact with the pages.

message 17: by Hazell (new)

Hazell (hazellcharman) | 212 comments Me too! I read books since I was a little kid. My books get thicker as I get older. And now I realize that books become an important part of me. My friends are like, "Why do you buy&read lots of books? Reading is boring, isn't it?" But for me, reading books is not boring at all. Like, I get something by reading books. Book is my kind of happiness. My friends confused why do I prefer books to movies. But there's something different between watching movies and reading books. The point is, BOOK ON,WORLD OFF.

message 18: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) I love reading to follow the characters on their adventure, to pull myself into the characters' worlds, and to enjoy adventure, comedy, romance, and action in the story.

message 19: by meera (new)

meera | 19 comments I read for enjoyment and knowledge. I love the moment when I open one and sink into it. I can escape from the world, into a story way more interesting than mine will ever be.

message 20: by Mira (new)

Mira (sysimarja) | 12 comments My mom used to read me fairytales and bedtime stories when I was little, and when I learnt to read myself I haven't stopped. I don't even have a specific reason, it's just something I've always done and loved doing.

i was gonna say the exact same thing :)

reading_angel13 (Vishalya) (goodreadscomvishalya13) I love reading because it helps me escape to a new world and every day you get to travel the world and even places that dont exist and I think that people who dont read just make life boring for themselves. I also like reading because it helps your relax but sometimes you can addicted to a special book and dont end up studying. (uh oh)
But i still love reading and will always love it :D

message 23: by chinami (new)

chinami | 175 comments When i was little my mom used to read me fairy tales. the stories were fascinating for a little kid. As i got older i wanted to hear new stories from new ppl so my mom got me books. Initially i read because the stories were fascinating but now it is for escapism. Reading to me is what ice cream is to most ppl when they are sad. that world is everything i want that is not real and it is as real when i want it to be.

message 24: by Morrigan (new)

Morrigan I read because it's all I know. I was raised on books. The characters and places are the only things that have stayed the same throughout my crazy life. Now that I am older, I read to escape. I read to make new friends with different characters.

message 25: by Kate (new)

Kate Smith (ghostprincess) | 5 comments I read because I love to be somewhere else for awhile. It is interesting to get away from real life sometime.

message 26: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Todd | 1 comments well if you have a big imagination then you get picture everything that's happening in the book and that's only one thing I like about books the topic in endless and I could have many reasons but its mainly that with books you can get away and forget everything your supposed to do and not worry about anything its just you and the book and the world you've created inside your head to go along with it :)

message 27: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Stengel (bookworm_77) | 117 comments I read because it brings me insight and knowledge about the world that only books can bring me. also I can escape from what's going on in my world from a little while and focus on doing something I love which is reading. it helps to destress me and it also relaxes me.

message 28: by Gina's (new)

Gina's (ginasgoodreads) I'm a bibliophile what more can I say? :D

message 29: by Rin (new)

Rin (nasrinnie) | 141 comments Because reading takes you to somewhere else magical. It gives you so much knowledge and lets you sit in your little bubble that takes you somewhere new every single day

message 30: by Robin (new)

Robin (iamthearbitraryavian) I enjoy the feeling of being so lost in a book that you forget where you are and anything that may be going on around you. you are just in the story and getting captured by a book like that is exactly why I keep reading. I have been on many adventures with many characters and at some points in the story I have started to prefer the fictional world over the real one and I think that's kinda what makes you a boom nerd at least for me.

message 31: by Christine (new)

Christine Gabriel (christinegabriel) | 7 comments I began reading at a young age. I was the "nerd" in school so I spent quite a bit of time alone. It was nice to be able to escape my own nightmarish reality into thousands of new ones. Reading helped me become the person I am today. Without books and the imaginations of so many people, I may have ended up a bitter old, people hating hag.

message 32: by Lara (new)

Lara (Laramoon) | 22 comments I started reading at a young age, I was always alone , I didn't have friends . so I spent most of the time at home, I read then to escape reality, it was good because while reading I live the character's reality instead. also I read because I discover the world through books I've learned so many things about people, feelings, society ... while reading. and just like that reading became a part of my life.

message 33: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (glitteryreads) I read to get away from all of the sad stuff in my life. It's an escape for me and it always will be. I'll never stop reading books, ever.

message 34: by Lucas (new)

Lucas Ege (louisbonmot) | 4 comments Growing up, I mostly read to escape into a fantasy world. I did other things involved in fantasy worlds, like video games, but reading was always my favorite. As I got older I started branching out and reading classics, books about history and art, and nonfiction, but my favorite book will always be a fictional fantasy. There's something about escaping into a different world that is so relaxing and refreshing.

message 35: by Mzzie (new)

Mzzie (mezle) I love stepping into a new world, and reading about the adventures of new characters. I love relating to new characters each time I read. Stepping into a new world it's just a magical feeling and it just makes me feel free. =]

message 36: by Nathaniel (new)

Nathaniel | 2 comments Carl Sagan once said "Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known".

I've always been an adventurer. In my past depression, I imagined distant places I could go and leave everything behind. Now, I am motivated to learn so that I can go there. I want my dreams to be a reality. That is why fiction books bore me. I'd much rather uncover the incredible secrets of the unknown universe which we know to be real rather than an imaginary universe (which may very well become reality like many past fiction compared to today's technology)

message 37: by Marinaserina (new)

Marinaserina | 39 comments Every day, I am expected to be the perfect straight A student-athlete. My brothers watch everything I do as well as my parents. Books are worlds I can keep to myself, a break from the science and math of school and the challenge of the wrestling room. That is why I love fiction.

message 38: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (fiftyshadeslover) | 3 comments Reading is a great escape when your life is dual or boring like mine. I truly love reading and connecting so deeply with these character's. They do exist to my imagination and it amazes me how you can connect with a character from a book. You can see yourself as them and I think maybe that's why you can connect more with some books then other's.

message 39: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 158 comments I started getting really interested reading when I started watching a book tube channel that I really liked (abookutopia) and she requested so many amazing books that I was hooked:)

message 40: by Lily (new)

Lily Watson | 30 comments Ever since I was a tiny baby, my mum would read to me every night to get me to sleep. She always says that it was the only thing that could actually get me to sleep in the first place! I think it just stuck from then on. I have never stopped reading!
Especially over these past few years it has really helped me a lot. I feel that it has been a sort of creative outlet for me. It helped me take my mind of my schoolwork which was just eating me up. I read to escape for a while and live somebody else's life for a while, even if it's just for a few pages. I have never stopped reading and I will never stop reading!!!

message 41: by Ria (new)

Ria to escape from the reality of life and to enter a different world... and for fun of course! who doesn't love a good book :)

Yes some of the stuff on TV is reruns and nothing really interesting.

message 47: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) For me I've always loved reading, although I don't remember reading much till I was about 11. That was the start of a really hard time in my life too so reading was a wonderful way to escape reality. :)

message 48: by Khristina (new)

Khristina Chess (khristina_chess) | 10 comments I've always been a reader, too. I like that a book can really put me inside the heads of characters who have experiences similar to mine, so I know that I'm not alone. I also like being inside characters who are completely different from me, so that I can see a new perspective. I love losing hours to a page-turning plot.

message 49: by Paulina (new)

Paulina (littledreammer) | 279 comments I consider myself as a dreamer. I love to fantasize and imagine things, people, places, etc. So I find all this at reading. I love the idea that only a few words written can lead me to an unknown location and live unimaginable adventures.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

To keep sane! There's so many hours in a day and you can't spend it all watching T.V and playing games :) Books are a lovely escape of relaxation.. I just made that up on the spot ;)
