I have just started Dark Carnival Dark Carnival (Dark Trilogy, #2) by Nancy K. Duplechain ~ Book 2 in the Dark Bayou trilogy.I loved the first book~ Dark Bayou (Dark Trilogy, #1) by Nancy K. Duplechain

Don't know why I waited so long to continue this series......oh wait, yes I do, it's because I continually find new books to add to my TBR mountain,LOL!

Anyway, I hope I enjoy this one as much.

Sad to say hat Dark Carnival was nothing like the first book in the Dark Bayou trilogy. I didn't like it at all,and had to stop reading because of offensive elements, and not be reading the third book!

Now for a 'palate cleanser~ I will try ~ Honeysuckle Hollow by Jennifer Moorman

O-M-G, Honeysuckle Hollow has become one of my favorite books of all time, and the one that I am reading now will become another. I am on page 195 of "An Olive Grove at the Edge of the World: How two American city boys built a new life in rural New Zealand", and it is clean and a wonderful-feel good read, keeping a smile on my face while reading. So many nice, fun characters. :D

The above book was AMAZING ,and another all time favorite.

I am now reading~ Cardwell Ranch Trespasser (Cardwell Ranch #3) by B.J. Daniels I enjoyed the first two books, so I have high hopes for this one, as well.

The above book was a wonderful 5-star read for me.

I love when I find a book "gripping in the very first chapter, which is how I found the book that I just started~ The Colony by F.G.Cottam~ The Colony (The Colony, #1) by F.G. Cottam

Great read for Halloween month!

The Colony was awesome! So was my next book, a super sweet and swoony cowboy romance~How to Catch a Cowboy in 10 Days

message 308: by Ramla Zareen (new)

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 21 comments I recently read Sophie Kinsella's latest publication: I Owe You One I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella and was pleasantly surprised.

I say this because I was a big fan of Sophie Kinsella at one time. The first five or six books of her Shopaholic series and her standalones:
—Twenties Girl
—The Undomestic Goddess
—Can You Keep a Secret?
. . . are among my favourite romantic comedies. (Saving I've Got Your Number for later to read as a special treat. My friend assures me it's as good as the books I mentioned above :-)

But then her writing just seemed to have lost its spark. The later books of her Shopaholic series didn't appeal much, and her standalone: Wedding Night actually felt like it was written by someone else! I simply stopped reading her books altogether.

I'm glad I picked up I Owe You One, though. It wasn't a five-star read, but I could see some of her original spark in the book. Looks like I'm going to get my favourite romcom author back after all :-)

Hi Ramla, I tried two of her books and decided she is not an author for me! Confessions of a Shopaholic, and The Undomestic Godess. Her books are just too implausible to even be funny. Plus crude sexual talk and "F" bombs!

I am now enjoying an Amish-themed romantic suspense~ Plain Target (Amish Country Justice, #1) by Dana R. Lynn

message 310: by Ramla Zareen (new)

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 21 comments Hmm, that's strange. Both these elements (crude sexual talks and F-bombs) were present in Wedding Night (one reason I didn't enjoy it), but I don't remember them in the books you mentioned. Or at least they weren't frequent enough to offend me. (I only ask for reasonably clean, not squeaky clean). Or maybe I was enjoying the books so much it didn't register? It's been so long, I really can't say :-)

You're right. The books definitely require a suspension of belief. The implausibilities didn't stop me from enjoying them though. I took them as a fun bit of escapism :-)

Plus, I could even relate to some of the things.

Like this line in Confessions of a Shopaholic:

"Life would be a lot easier if conversations were rewindable and erasable, like videos. Or if you could instruct people to disregard what you just said, like in a courtroom."

It brought a smile to my face, but it also struck a chord, since I've occasionally wished the same. Lol.

As for The Undomestic Goddess, it reminded me of how I was like at 22, when I moved to Germany after getting married. I had no idea how to cook and do basic housework since my mother and our maid managed everything when I was in Pakistan. The first time I cooked, baked a cake, did the laundry, and cleaned the bathroom—well, if you were to read it all in a book, you probably wouldn't believe it could happen in real-life. Lol.

Anyway, I've learned humour can be pretty subjective. Like I find books by P. G. Wodehouse (a 20th century comic author) hilarious, but a friend of mine can't understand what's so funny about them. Lol. So I can understand there might be people who didn't find Sophie Kinsella's books to their taste :-)

By the way, have you tried anything by Jessie Gussman? I think you'll enjoy her books. My favourite is her Baxter Boys series:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/2541...

I especially loved the first book: What He Wants

Here's my review:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

You might prefer her Sweet Water Ranch Billionaire Cowboys series though:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/2667...

I remember you mentioning you like Cowboys romances :-)

She's also written an Amish romance series which is going to get published soon. I beta read the first book and loved it as much as What He Wants. Can't wait to read the published version :-)

Hi Ramla, Oh yes, Cowboy romances are my weakness. I don't read any of the many Billionaire romances that are prevalent these days.
Billionaires are just so out of the average woman's league, how can any woman get past the implausibility of those plots????

I am not familiar with the author Jessie Gussman. Some of her books sound like ones that I would enjoy, so I will check her out.

Perfectly Good Crime was a great 5-star read for me with a mystery- crime-drama, and a very sweet romance.

Now I'm going to start "Growing Season" a back-to- the- land-novice- farmer type story which I love.

Hope you can find something you like soon! So disappointing. It's too bad that so much on the market is written with so much language and filth. It's really not necessary to drive a good plot. I find it painful to read.

City Of Ghosts was a nice spooky 5-star paranormal mystery, then I read two fun witchy books in the "Accidental Familiar" trilogy. Both were 5-star reads.
All Too Familiar (Accidental Familiar Book 1) by Belinda White
and~ Relatively Familiar (Accidental Familiar Book 2) by Belinda White

Unfortunately book -4 in the Family Skeleton series- The Skeleton Paints a Picture (Family Skeleton Mystery #4) by Leigh Perry was a huge disappointment, that I DNF.

I am now reading and so far enjoying~ Wrapped Up in You (Heartbreaker Bay, #8) by Jill Shalvis

J. Shrout | 3 comments I’ve been reading more classics lately. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in December and I started War and Peace as a year-long read (wish me luck! haha) at the beginning of the month. :)

They tend to be cleaner and also free if they are in the public domain. :D
