What a disappointment The Husband's Secret was! After waiting so long to read my library's Kindle edition, I found it to be a very distasteful read! So nasty, that as soon as I found out what his secret was as about 40%, I stopped reading!

I did not like the characters and didn't want to wade through any more crude sexual talk, dirty thoughts[including suspicions of incest because they haven't had sex in 6 months], strong scattered cursing including religious swears and "F" bombs!

Put off from reading a 'Thriller' again because of pervasive profanity, including 'F' bombs! It is so difficult to find 'clean' thrillers, unless one sticks with YA or Christian.

I wasn't a Christian until adulthood[and no longer one], yet thankfully, neither my friends nor family use filthy language, and even as a teen I avoided the Cretins who did! Why is it that so many authors write like they think everyone is a foul mouthed lowlife?

Desiree Taggard | 51 comments Oh no!!!!! I hate that you struck out the last few books. Nothing worse than not being able to finish a book because they are nasty or crass. I hate that movies and tv are the same way too! Even PG movies I have to watch before knowing my little ones are good to go!

Desiree wrote: "Oh no!!!!! I hate that you struck out the last few books. Nothing worse than not being able to finish a book because they are nasty or crass. I hate that movies and tv are the same way too! Even PG..."

Thanks Desiree, actually I loved Elephant Company, and the Amish/Englisher trading places story~ Double Take, and two Mennonite suspense stories Simple Secrets and Simple Deceit were excellent. Plus, I liked, [but didn't love] the cozy mystery~Playing with Fire (Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mystery #2) by J.J. Cook. So really just The Husband's Secret and this last book ~The Back Door Man were 'trashy'.

You are so right about the movies too. When my kids were teens we just got cable, and I saw right away that I had to screen the movies before I let them watch even PG......and PG-13 are often disgusting! I hate that even the Previews to some TV shows are often disgusting and should be restricted to after 9PM, IMO!

I just finished the wonderful 5-star read ~ Life with Lily (The Adventures of Lily Lapp #1) by Mary Ann Kinsinger by Mary Ann Kinsinger, and yes, it does have a chapter showing the controversy over some Amish using Powwow doctors[because some feel it is superstition, witchcraft, or from the devil], very interesting, as the whole book is a delight. ♥

Now I will start a cozy mystery~ Farm Fresh Murder (A Farmers' Market Mystery, #1) by Paige Shelton

message 56: by Desiree Taggard (new)

Desiree Taggard | 51 comments Man, I got busy and haven't really updated on anything.

The Sword of Summer this was really good. I loved Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase fits right into that genre!

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children I was on the fence. I enjoyed the story but it had too much language and the photos kept pulling me away from the story.

While You Were Stranded I love a good chick rom com story and this one fit the bill. Clean and pulled the heartstrings. The whole series is pretty amazing.

Now I am reading Lady Renegades I love the light hearted fantasy/ya that is captured in the series. I hope this one lives up the the first two.

message 57: by Lyndsey (new)

Lyndsey | 27 comments So, I finished The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

I thought it was excellent for history buffs :) I read reviews that it was slow and boring with all the historical references. (Not sure what they were expecting. look at the title). It pulled me in right away. Had to find out what happens!! :)

It is the story of Historians following ... Yes, Dracula. Not my usual genre

When I'm posting on my phone, if I navigate away for any reason, even if I just flip out of the GR app without actually closing it, I lose everything. It is really annoying, because I like to think about what I write before I post, and if I get a call, or need to reference something, POOF! it goes away. I much prefer my laptop for that reason.

I'm in the process of moving so the book I am supposed to be reading, is not getting much attention, lol! Should be done moving by Saturday night.

message 62: by Kristi (new)

Kristi Cramer (kristicramer) | 109 comments I'm reading a review copy of The Flame and the Arrow and it is slow going. Not sure it qualifies as clean, but I'm about 1/5 of the way into it, and it mostly has innuendo. Can't think I've read any f-bombs, but I don't think I've taught myself to flag them, yet.

It's one of those they approached me and asked me to read to review, and I don't tend to pay too much attention to genre. I'll let you all know.

Lyndsey | 27 comments So ... On to a new book.
(I did read another this past weekend called Keychup Clouds ... YA novel written through letters to a murderer in prison by a young teen racked with guilt)
So .. The new Book A.D. 30 by Ted Dekker.
Curious if anyone else has read this and their thoughts.

I finished Lady Renegadesand thought that the series ended very well. I love the whole southern belle theme too.

Finally finished Farm Fresh Murder while moving. I think I would have enjoyed it more, if I could have stuck with it without interruptions, so I will try If Fried Chicken Could Fly by the same author. When I finished moving I read and loved the second book in the little Amish girl Lily Lapp series~ A New Home For Lily.
Now I am reading The Dress Shop Of Dreams.
The Dress Shop of Dreams by Menna van Praag

Farm Fresh Murder (A Farmers' Market Mystery, #1) by Paige Shelton

If Fried Chicken Could Fly (Gram’s Country Cooking School Mystery #1) by Paige Shelton

A New Home for Lily (The Adventures of Lily Lapp, #2) by Mary Ann Kinsinger

Becky Lawyer | 106 comments Gracious, it's been so long since I've tuned in. To catch up, I recently finished the most recent 3 of Laurie R. King's Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell mysteries, all of which I enjoyed, but then I love the series, so no surprise!
The Language of Bees

The God of the Hive

Pirate King

Garment of Shadows

Dreaming Spies

The Murder of Mary Russell

Also read Peace Like a River for our book group and LOVED IT!!! It has a lot about miracles in it and some references to the Bible, but is not overly Christian that I recall?

Also Brandon Sanderson's Shadows of Self, which is the second in a trilogy which I am very much enjoying.

Soon to be starting Leviathan for our book group. I've read it before but liked it, so am happy to read it again. I love rereading books!

Desiree Taggard | 51 comments Finished up the Ashfall series. Like most apocalyptic series there is some language, violence and needed suspended reality. I enjoy the whole idea of people having to overcome a failing world though.

I enjoyed the cozy mystery~ If Fried Chicken Could Fly (Gram’s Country Cooking School Mystery #1) by Paige Shelton and now I'm reading ~ Harmony Trilogy by Nancy Mehl I read and liked the first book, but decided to borrow the trilogy for my Kindle, so now I can read the next two books.

Sorry to say that the Harmony Trilogy had far, far too much god-talk and religious proselytizing, especially the last book from half-way until the end. It was like one tediously long sermon!Preaching, preaching, preaching, so it ruined the story, and I skimmed to the end. It ruined what was a good story, and turned me off the preaching ,so much that I think it will be quite some time before I read another Amish or Mennonite book!

So next up is the Fantasy-romance The Girl Who Chased The Moon~ The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen

I hope you enjoy that one! I feel the same way about series, but sometimes I wonder if it's just my mistake to read too many books in a series in a row, without reading something else that causes me to get 'burnt out'?

Tried to read John Saul's ~The Manhattan Hunt Club The Manhattan Hunt Club by John Saul , but had to stop, because of crude sexual talk, "F" bombs, pervasive profanity, and homosexual sex killing! I had no idea that Saul wrote crap as offensive as Stephen King!

So now I'm reading a contemporary western romance~ Quinn (Wyoming Sky, #1) by R.C. Ryan

message 76: by Charmaine (new)

Charmaine (wistad) Right now I am listening to the audio edition of the second book in the Maise Dobbs series by Jacquiline Winspear. The first book is called Maise Dobbs. The second is Birds of a Feather. So far, this series is very clean and the characters are interesting and well developed. There seems to be quite a bit of mysticism in Maise's abilities to "sense" things, but it is not of the religious type. I'm not entirely comfortable with that (even though it's not religious) so I'm not sure if I will continue with the series beyond these two books.

I did read a retelling of Beauty and the beast called A Court of Thorns and Roses It was ok. I will warn you that there are some mature scenes in it. I feel like Robin Mckinley did it better in Beauty. I am on hold for The Crown and Red Rising. I am kind of craving a scary book too so I will be checking out my horror and thriller bookshelf soon.

I have book #4~ Goblet Of Fire, loaded on my Kindle from the library, ready to read, and will be starting it today.

The cover photo of a beautiful Australian Shepherd, and the book synopsis, made me go for ~Show dog : the charmed life and trying times of a near perfect purebred.

Back in the 70's I was a fancier of purebred rough-coated Collies along with donkeys and mules, and since I didn't drive back then, I would make my poor hubby drive me around to dog, donkey and mule shows. (I so wanted to own a 'gaited' donkey or mule. )Sometimes I had to really finagle him to go, but we always had a great time. I finally got my beautiful purebred collie, but never had any desire to show him.

Anyway, these days I am charmed by the Aussie, but I know they are way too smart and active for this 65 year old,and a Chihuahua is more my speed, haha.

So I am reading~Show Dog: The Charmed Life and Trying Times of a Near-Perfect Purebred by Josh Dean
https://www.amazon.com/Show-Dog-Char....

Then I have another Aussie book, that a cover with an even more beautiful 'blue-eyed' Aussie compelled me to purchase for my new Kindle Paperwhite~♥♥♥
Show Dog Sings the Blues (The Show Dog Diaries Book 2)by Devin O'Branagan
https://www.amazon.com/Show-Sings-Bl....

It has been a busy time here with my teen granddaughter staying with her dad and I, or I would have already finished~Show Dog: The Charmed Life and Trying Times of a Near-Perfect Purebred.
I am really loving this book! Though I was a dog show fancier I never got involved, however I am enjoying reading about that world, and especially about the personal experience of owning an Aussie. Anyone who is interested in the dog show sport, or the Australian Shepherd breed, would love this book!

Kristi Cramer (kristicramer) | 109 comments I'm reading Dragon's Future - it's a MG/YA Fantasy and it's okay. It seems awfully long for an MG, but everything is so simplified I'm having trouble sticking with the story. I won the paperback in a contest, though, and I said I'd review. *shrug*

I'm also reading The Healer's Rune also a YA-type fantasy, and it is better, but I'm having the problem that I sometimes have with new adult, where I dislike the main character because she is so real. She's got a temper, and it almost makes her a strong woman, but it gets in the way of her listening to people who are trying to help her. The story also makes me uncomfortable, because it is showcasing the worst in people--pettiness, letting fear dictate your words and actions, and throwing others under the bus to save yourself. I spent the first 3/4 of the book not sure I was going to like it at all, but in the last 1/4 it is starting to come together, and I can see that it is actually working for the story. I've got about 20 pages to go on it. (Also won it in a contest.)

It was just too weird and other-worldly for my tastes so now I am reading~ The Dog Merchants Inside the Big Business of Breeders, Pet Stores, and Rescuers by Kim Kavin Wow I had no idea that a giant corporation Hunte Inc. supplies puppies to the pet stores ,nor did I know that there are giant dog "auctions" like the one in Wheaton, MO, and that even rescues/shelters buy the current popular breeds from them!
Everyone is in it for the M-O-N-E-Y! I think if I do get another dog it will only be from a free puppies ad, where they have been family raised inside! The only way you know they didn't come from stacked feces/urine coated wire crates from some scumbag out to make big $!
