SOLVED. Dysfunctional mother and two children [s]

Hi,
The book was about a mother with two children who were rather dysfunctional. The book was possibly a Booker Nomination or winner. The mother leaves the children to their own devices quite a bit. They mostly seem to live out of a car. At one point the children are hiding from someone up in some sort of tower. I think they may have taken a bag of money or something that belonged to these men.
Thanks for the help. I really enjoyed this book and would love to read it again.
