PointyEars42 | 476 comments Is anyone watching "Witches of East End"? Its a very VF sort of thing: adult female leads (in their 30's & 40's) with prodigious magical gifts and the problems the world brings to their door...with some male eye candy thrown in :)

I don't want to get too attached to it since every witchy series for grown ups after Charmed has gotten the axe pretty early on ("Eastwick" etc) but it's been surprisingly not bad so far.

Has anyone read the book/s? I find that all the things I can't stand to read in PNRs don't bother me in the least when its on screen and I'd love to know how true to the book the series is.

Dawn (dawnv) I loved Charmed such a cheesy show yet I find myself still watching reruns.

I have watched the pilot and part of another episode of Witches of East End and I think it is working itself out. The pilot felt a lot rough around the edges but the next episode was rather good.

I tried to read the book but it was a dnf I could not get into it.

Chrissy | 5 comments I like the show so far. The premise seems interesting but we shall see how it goes. I don't really care for the author of the books so I never read this series.

I've been watching it, it has some cheesy stuff with that younger sister and the two dudes, but it's very guilty pleasure, and DEF a VF show!

Ivy (ivy99) | 43 comments I know it's totally got a charmed vibe but I really like it so far. I read MCD’s vampire series based on a friend's recommendation. But I have to say I wouldn't have read beyond the 1st book if it hadn't been recommended to me. I don't know if I'll read the books for this series.

PointyEars42 | 476 comments I wanted to love this show so badly but I've given it 6 episodes and I just can't take it anymore. Please explain to me why writers (of both genders and across all media) seem to think a great way to move the plot along is to lower the IQ of a female character? Why does the TSTL "heroine" still exist?

Every week Ingrid plays with dangerous spells that backfire but the next day she does it again because she's too thick to learn from her repeated mistakes... and too lazy to run her ideas past the experts who live in her own house. As if that wasn't enough, Freya picks up something with her bare hands despite knowing that it is not only a lethal magical item but also hazardous medical waste recently removed from a patient's throat. Ick.

Why make a woman do reckless, dangerous, counter-intuitive things when accidents or malicious intentions etc will get you there without tarnishing her worth? Inexperience or naivete is NOT the same thing as willfully abandoning common sense. Aaaargh!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to leave my phone and torch in the car and go alone into this creepy old house to investigate those strange noises...

Jocelyn (jocelyn73c) | 33 comments I started watching it just because I try to watch as many new TV shows as I can to test them out and review them for sites etc, and I was surprised when I kept watching it! It's definitely cheesy, definitely not the greatest, but it's a lot of fun. I'm filing it in 'guilty pleasures' and leaving it at that lol

Jonathan (calijonathan) I saw a couple of episodes last week just by accident. I was programming late at night and looking for something to occupy my time when code was compiling. I have been a fan of Madchen Amick since Twin Peaks and always admired Julia Ormond. Great to see them with some interesting roles. The show is very dark and I hope it does last more than a season.

Kamil | 938 comments @ PointyEars42 I totally aggre with what you wrote about reckless act, but so far it's quite a good show on magic, with a decent plot (no spoilers on who the shifter is!) and an awesome amount of references

Corina (katdakiwi) | 2 comments Interesting show, definitely has that charmed vibe. I agree with pointyEars42 - i'm a bit nervous to get attached to it in case they cancel it like Eastwick. Oh well, its on my guilty pleasure list right below "Reign"

It's been picked up for a second season! Ah guilty pleasures :) Gotta say, I love the female relationships on the show. I think Julia Ormond and Madchen Amick are my favorites even though the other two are my age.

Erika (hazelphoenixfire) No problem! :)

Jennifer | 6 comments I watched the first season of the show because I read the book and really enjoyed it. There are some things in common with the book, but the show really is its own entity, IMO.

message 17: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne | 43 comments I enjoyed the 1st season & plan to watch the next one. Generally, I don't believe in "guilty" pleasures, but this show fits that category for me. Mostly because I find the writing & acting (with the exception of Madchen Amick) woefully...basic. I think it's a pleasant diversion for fantasy fans despite its faults, though.
