The Shining buddy read - start date 10/17/13

I am really enjoying it so far. Danny and Jack are very interesting characters don't you think?

Jack is such a slime ball! (view spoiler)[ Even before he started drinking, the way he treated his wife was not great. He would take off with his male buddies and leave her home alone. Even though her mom was mean to her, he got her to cut off all ties completely. I think he just wanted full control over her and for her not to have ties to anyone. His character is really well written. I like Danny. I think his abilities are really interesting. I like that he can see things that will happen in the future. Too bad he doesn't pay more attention to what he sees. (hide spoiler)] I just started part 2 today.

I finished up to part 2 today. (view spoiler)[ I am too tired to continue reading. I love the connection between Danny and Dick Hallorann. I wish that Dick would just stay with the family for the winter to keep them company. Danny needs someone who understands him and can talk to about anything.

How scary for Danny to see the things that he sees and not be able to tell his parents about it. It is a big responsibility for a five year old to not talk about what he sees because he knows his daddy needs the money.

I do feel like his dad shines too or has some other ability, maybe that's why he is an alcoholic to stop his powers. Hallorann said there was something about Jack that he was hiding. How can Hallorann leave Danny to that hotel? (hide spoiler)] It certainly is a creepy book. I haven't read a horror book in so many years. I hope it doesn't creep me out too much.

I haven't read a horror book in a long time either. I'm at the end of part one. I does take a while for them to actually get to the hotel. Also I never realised the problems started before they got there.

I knew Jack had a drinking problem but I didn't know about the other stuff. I always find it so interesting to be able to know the character's thoughts. You just can't get that from a movie. Jack's thoughts are pretty creepy.

Yes his thoughts are creepy. I've just started reading part three. Really liked Hallorann for the brief time he was in the book. I would hate to be stuck in a creepy massive hotel, cut off from the world, made to feel small by all those empty rooms.

Hey! I started part three too today :) I love this book! I'm part of a Stephen King group on facebook and so far this fall I have been reading the book of the month with them. Carrie, Salem's Lot and extra: Joyland. The Shining was the BoM of September so I'm a bit behind... :)

I am about halfway through part 3. It gets creepier as we get farther into the book.

I just saw this Buddy Read and downloaded it on my Kindle. I will start reading when I get home. And will then hopefully be able to join in on the discussion :-) I was always a little scared to read the book...the movie got me when I saw it for the first time in the 8th grade. So here goes nothing!!

I find it so interesting to see (view spoiler)[ how Jack's personality has changed the longer he is in the hotel. He is getting so nasty now. I do wish that Danny would speak up more about his abilities. Knowing how much his dad is thinking about drinking, he needs to tell his parents. The book really is getting creepier and creepier as I read. The bees that came back to life, the firehose, and Tony is creepy. I wish the doctor found something that would make them leave. It is like they all know about Danny's abilities but no one is really talking about it. They could figure out that they just need to get out of that hotel. I know that it is just going to get worse when the snow comes. (hide spoiler)]

Im at the beginning of Part 2. loving it so far. It DID take a while to get to the hotel..

Started part 4 (view spoiler)[ Danny went into room 217, where he was specifically told to stay out of. Why would he go there when he knew bad stuff happened there. He had bad feelings about that room. He was so traumatized by what happened in that room. I can't believe that Jack doesn't want to leave the hotel, especially considering how Danny was affected and that he pretty much experienced the same thing as Danny. He was freaked out being in that room. How can he not leave? He is more worried about not having money or a proper job and people's perception of him. (hide spoiler)]

Im near the end of part three. It's not as creepy as i thought it would be.

I find it creepy Katie.g but not scary.

I think it is quite creepy, i like the eerie setting and the fact that the hotel hold's many secret's.

there's a lot the reader is learning as the story unfold's, not only about the surroundings but also about the character's as well.

I finished the book today. (view spoiler)[ It was pretty gross reading about Jack smashing Wendy and Dick with the mallet. I could imagine the crunching sounds and how it would feel. Danny was so smart to be able to figure out how to beat the hotel. Again gross when Jack turned the mallet on himself. I am glad Jack had that moment of clarity when Danny said you aren't my dad and the hotel lies. Danny could really see that Jack wan't his dad but really the hotel. It was freaky when Dick was in the shed getting the blankets and the hotel got him for a minute. It is like at the end of every horror movie where there is one last scary part. I thought Dick was going to go out and try to get them. I was so glad he was able to shut out the hotel. (hide spoiler)]

I started it a little early, but I'm not done yet (almost 50%). So far it's really interesting.

Thanks for telling what to look for in Book 2. I was wondering (view spoiler)[ if the hotel was rebuilt and Danny was returning to it. Why anyone would go back there....it would be interesting to hear what happened to his mom and Dick after the fact. After going through all that, what do you do next? How do you not go crazy? (hide spoiler)] I am probably not going to read Book 2 because I already have November planned out.

Maybe you will read it at some point. I can tell you that (view spoiler)[the hotel is included in the second book, but not in a way you may expect. Though, I don't yet know how important it will be, since I'm only about half way through the book. (hide spoiler)]

I completely understand having your reading scheduled in advance. I can hardly ever squeeze anything else in. Right now I'm running a book behind schedule and may have to skip something.

Yeah I have mine planned out too because from january I'll be too busy to read. So I want to read the books I want the most. Doctor Sleep is on there so I will be joining you for the buddy read.

Finished re-reading the shining tonight. Second time around the book was even better. Definitely a classic.

I am almost finished. I just started part 5. It is taking me longer to read than I thought. I am finding that it is creepy and suspensful...not too scary. Hopefully I will be done with it soon....and then can start on Doctor Sleep with you all as well!!!

I finished The Shining this weekend. It was really different than the movie!!! I kept waiting for the creepy twin girls to appear! But I thought it was a great read. I haven't read alot of Stephen Kings books, so I will have to add him to my (already too long) reading list.
