I almost never (I don't recall ever doing this) base anything on someone I know, but I do draw from personal experiences.

When I write, I think about an experience I had or about a story someone told me and I try to incorporate that into my work. It's somewhat hard not to base fiction on previous experiences. It's what makes each story unique: we've experienced it in some shape or fashion.
