Laura I finished this book, and I had no idea what happened. There were so many questions left unanswered (like who is the Physician, how did the chocolate and breath strips factor in, how did Anna initially get turned into the "monster," how did the transitions work and how was Anneliese's messed up, how does Dex's abilities figure into all this, what exactly was the "monster" - are we talking about demons? Ahhhh so many questions!)
And then there was the actual ending. So was the cycle broken by becoming the rapist guy? Why did her choice change to become a man instead of another young girl? Did Annaliese turn to dust like the book described during the transition, or did she get up and walk away, also described in the book? What happened to the thing that inhabited her?
I'M SO CONFUSED. Help!!

Rose I'm not entirely sure, but from what I'm guessing I think by the ending, the cycle was broken. Anna states that between the two different people, the second option was an address and hence, her "way off the endless treadmill." She's probably referring to the endless cycle. She became the guy or as she refers to, "the monster" so that he wont be able to hurt anyone else anymore. I think it was her way of trying to repent for taking over all the other innocent bodies and hence, her first act that was somewhat selfless. The brujas then created a new, whole body for her using the remnants of the other girls and Annaliese's hair. They state that the Physician liked giving "second chances" and hence, the brujas made her "anew" by "rebuilding the body" that had been "broken down.- I'm geussing that it's referring to the bodies of the girls that had turned to dust.
Hence in the end when she wakes up, she's in the new Annaliese's body that's been made by combining the remnants of the other girls. It's a new beginning for her. Her decision to choose the guy was what broke the endless cycle and hence, she was given a second chance to live.

Kristin She rejected the chocolate because subconsciously it was connected to her consuming the first heart. Franky gave her "sugar with the medicine". So before she had any real memory of what she could do, her body/subconscious made a connection: chocolate and blood mix together in her mouth. Since she didn't understand the memory, she freaked out.

Originally, the breath mints were just to help with the aftertaste of all the barfing she'd done because of the chocolate, but it was actually a habit held-over from when she was Anna the smoker. Think of people who consume large amounts of sunflower seeds after they quit smoking. It is a replacement habit.

Anna initially turned into the monster by eating Katie's heart. She absorbed some of Franky's magic when they mixed blood. Not to mention, I think Anna was part of Franky's wish, and since the Physician liked him so much, Franky got what he wanted.

I would love to know more about the Physician. And the brujahs. Prequel???

The transition from Jaclyn to Annaliese was interrupted by Jaclyn's mother. That is why it wasn't completed perfectly. The whole heart wasn't consumed, not to mention that Annaliese's body suffered real brain trauma at the end of a pick ax.
