Jessica I loved this book, and wanted to see what people's opinions are.

I think her most valid reason was the rape of the girl. I feel like if I would have been in her situation at that party, it would have been hard to go along with all that guilt weighing you down. I wouldn't kill myself, though. But again, if I were Hannah, and all the other bad things had happened to me, then I might have a valid reason.

Molly That list from freshman year.

of course the list didn't really bother her because it was a joke and she knew that, but through that list it gave people the 'okay' to touch her and use her as the joke. and it caused her to lose her 'closest' friends and stuff. The rape and car accident are probably a good reason too.

Kirstyn I think the point was they were all inter-connected and each contribution was significant.

Molly That is true. Every reason built upon the next, that's what she called the snow-ball affect.

But what do you think was her most valid reason?

Kirstyn I think all the reasons were equally valid but her breaking point was likely the list.

Molly I thought the same.

I felt like Hannah was a horrible person for telling the girl who was raped that SHE was part of the reason Hannah committed suicide. Hannah sat by and watched, and then added guilt to the horrible things that girl would have already felt. That was when I could no longer sympathize with anything Hannah complained about. It all seemed shallow and whiny compared to what she did to the people on the list.

I don't think that Hannah was blaming the girl who got raped. She was blaming herself and (correct me if I'm wrong)Justin that they let the rape happen and didn't do anything about it. Justin could have prevented the rape by not letting the rapist go in the room, but he did, and later Hannah found him sitting on a bed, looking at his hands and feeling guilty. And Hannah was in the closet hiding the whole time.

Library Lady 📚 She didn't say it was the girl's fault that she got raped, but she did make a tape for her, saying she was one of the reasons Hannah killed herself.

Saying her rape was one of the reasons isn't saying SHE caused the rape that caused the suicide. It's like she was saying. "I was suffering with you, even if you didn't know it. I just couldn't take it like you could. This is too much for me."

Heather I felt like sending the raped girl that tape was Hannah's way of saying to the girl how guilty she felt for standing by and not doing anything/saying anything. I think Hannah is both acknowledging that it happened, and that it shouldn't have happened; she is definitely NOT saying that the girl herself is at fault.

Also, I don't think there is EVER a "valid" reason to commit suicide.

Kristen Callihan Honestly,I feel that there really isn't a good reason for suicide. I feel like that is what people do when they feel like they can't do anything else. Which, if Hannah was more open about things, I think she would have realized that she did have a lot going for her, even with all the negative stuff that had happened to her. Its a permanent solution to temporary problems. After everything that had happened though, I felt that the rape was really her breaking point. The one event that couldn't be redeemable, or that she could ever recover from, especially with her low self esteem. The list and what she lost from that made her feel degraded and that she had little self worth. The rape, though, I think that was her tipping point. She couldn't recover from the guilt that she felt from that point, and she wanted others to know what happened that night. Then the car accident afterwards just compounded the issue. She wouldn't even listen or let people in at that point, and I felt that the last of it was just her acting like she was trying, when she really wasn't. It didn't matter how the conversation with the teacher/guidance counselor when, she already knew what she was going to do.

She was trying to pretend, or keeping up appearances and no matter how despicable I find it, at least it was keeping her alive. When she stopped pretending, she stopped all living already. That's when she gave up, so that is what killed her. As for the best reason... I think the real reason was what she couldn't say, and all added up to. She was someone she didn't recognize or like anymore.

Alice Irene I felt like the incident with Hannah being raped and the car accident is what pushed Hannah to commit suicide.

Mayang I think it was the fact that nobody took a second glance at her. There she was, crying for help to everybody and no one noticed. Her last straw was the teacher, she admitted to him that something happened, and he didn't try to help her. Hanna was depressed and what she needed was someone to tell her that everything is gonna be ok. She needed someone to lean on, and nobody came. Well, the narrator did came but he didn't push himself to help her, and that's okay be cause he didn't know too.

Sara I think that even if you see the things she went through as stupid reasons to commit suicide, all of them together made her very vulnerable and depressed. She was going through so much and nobody cared, so she thought that she was not important. She was screaming and crying for help in her own way. She was really insecure, so it was not easy to talk with someone about her issues. And I am not saying that committing suicide is okay because it is definatly not, but she just gave up. She didn't wanted to be hurt again. So in conclusion, I think that she killed herself when she thought she was not getting any help and that nobody cared. But it was also her fault somehow because she never talked to anybody about it and that is wrong. I know what it feels like to not being able to talk about yourself and it makes life harder day by day, but it is not okay though.

buttercup I love the book..
words hurt..
she went through bullying...
I totally understand that..
I cried a lot while reading this book...
esp. her last words!!am sorry!!!she wasn't not supposed to say!!they should be sorry!!!Hannah didn't deserve what happened..

The most valid reason would have to be her not wanting to continue living. Suicide, if justified by anything, is definitely justified by the person's loss of the will to live.

Courie I think there is no valid reason as to why hannah committed suicide. People has it's own way of coping up on different stresors in life. Some stressors might be easy or small to others but as what I said we have different ways to cope up. Hannah, tried to fixed or help herself but at some point while she is fixing it more and more ostacles are piling up that it made her choke up and for her to only escape is to end her life. And I think the professor was the one who pushed her to do it. And the thought of no one care to ask if she is okay, just because she look strong in the outside doesn't mean she is okay.
