Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 33 comments I've just setup the preorders page at Smashwords for the new gay scifi short story I wrote in The Phoenician Series for William and Jared. Check it out here:
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...

The book is scheduled to release on November 7, 2013 (my birthday) and you can read the first 15% free right now as a downloadable sample available in all popular formats. I really hope some of you will give it a try and let me know if you like it. I'll be happy to comp the group with a coupon code in November or December if there seems to be sufficient interest here to get a group read going (my goal would be to get reviews, obviously).

Don't forget to add the book to your Goodreads "Wants to Read" shelf:

I'm still working on the blurbage, but (a) this was my first-ever attempt at writing an m/m romance or piece of gay erotica. I have no clue if I succeeded or failed at that aspect (of the 28,000 words about 14,000 are the sex scene so there might be "too much story" for some while there's "too much sex" for others) and (b) I really focused on making sure this story would work for the series, and not just as erotica so I'm positive it's a little different than your typical gay erotica.

As I've said all over the place, when I write gay characters, they are not "defined" by their sexual orientation. They are men, who have specific personalities and hopes and dreams and flaws--and oh, they just so happen to be gay. I like to see all of my characters like that no matter what their sexual or other orientations might be.

There is a bit of BDSM flavor to the 14,000 word sex scene but I have deliberately "softened" off the edge for my mainstream scifi readers (and I'm sure I'll hear how shocking it is anyway--as if!) I think the interplay between the two guys, as the reader gets to glimpse into each of their Points-of-View (POV) is pretty much edgier than the actual sex TBH.

The point of the story and the sex was character development for these two guys. Neither one goes into their first time together with the same expectations as he comes out having realized. They are both kind of transformed by their first time together which is, I hope, always the point when my characters have sex of any kind. The way I did it here, however, was with a super-duper "mind fuck" of a switch upon switch upon switch. I couldn't stop laughing at the two of them because they are both trying to figure out what's going on and both think they know (or are in familiar territory) and neither one has a clue. Very fun but I doubt I'll take up a career writing m/m romance. Guys like William Harrington and Jared Crenshaw are just too rare to come by!
